Recently there is an increasing interest in particulate matter emission because of new emission regulations, health awareness and environmental problems. It requires to improve particulate measurement techniques as well as to reduce soot emissions from combustion systems. As mentioned above, it is demanded that reduction techniques together with measurement techniques of exhausted particulate matters in combustion systems such as vehicles. However, measurement techniques of particulate matters should be prior to reduction techniques of that because it is able to know an increase and a decrease of exhausted particulate matters when measured particulate matters. Therefore, in this study, we report the measurement of soot primary-particle size using time-resolved laser induced incandescence (TIRE-LII) technique in laminar ethylene diffusion flame. As an optical method, laser induced incandescence is one of well known methods to get information for spatial and temporal soot volume fraction and soot primary particle size. Furthermore, TIRE-LII is able to measure soot primary particle size that is decided to solve the decay ate of signal S $(t_1)$ and S $(t_2)$ at two detection time. In laminar ethylene diffusion flame, visual flame height is 40 mm from burner tip and measurement points are height of 15, 20, 27.5, 30 mm above burner tip along radial direction. As increasing the height of the flame from burne. tip, primary particle size was increased to HAB(Height Above Burner tip)=20mm, and then decreased from HAB=27.5 mm to 30 mm. This results show the growth and oxidation processes for soot particles formed by combustion.
The objective of this study is to enhance the effectiveness of Korean Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) program. Three main tasks are: to measure pollutant emissions of in-use light-duty diesel vehicles (LDVs); to evaluate the validity of existing smoke control scheme for low-smoke-emitting vehicles, which have diesel particulate filters, DPF, to meet stringent Euro-5 emission limits; and to assess the necessity and the benefit of $NO_x$ inspection, which is not involved in current I/M program. We measured second-by-second smoke, particulate and gaseous emissions of 27 LDVs using opacity smoke meter, photo-acoustic soot sensor, and portable emissions measurement system, respectively, under the Korean I/M test driving cycle, KD-147. We find that the DPF plays a key role in controlling soot, which can be considered as black carbon contained in particulate matter. Thus, from an I/M perspective, we believe smoke inspection strategies for Euro-5 diesel vehicles should be more focused on the capability of detecting DPF malfunctions or failures, in order to keep DPF properly functional. Fleet averaged distance-specific $NO_x$ emissions are consistently higher than corresponding emission limits, and the values are similar among pre-Euro-3, Euro-3, and Euro-4 vehicle fleets. These findings indicate that the $NO_x$ inspection should be incorporated into current I/M program in order to manage urban $NO_x$ emissions. This research allows the Korean I/M program keep pace with developments in vehicle technologies, as well as the increased emphasis on $NO_x$ with respect to air quality and human health.
Combined technique of burner and DOC has been used for regeneration of Diesel Particulate Filter. Experiments has been performed to increase the temperature of engine exhaust gas to burn the collected soot in DPF at all conditions of operation of 3 liter diesel engine. Ignition temperature of soot can be successfully obtained by heats of burner flame and residual fuel oxidation at diesel oxidation catalyst even in the condition of oxygen deficiency. It is found that the load of air compressor and heat loss can be reduced to the level of practical application. It is also found that CO and THC emissions are not increase by additional combustion of regeneration burner.

A study on the combustion and exhaust emissions characteristics of diesel engine with various suction air humidity is performed experimentally. In this paper, suction air humidity is changed from RH 50% to RH 90%, the experiments are performed at engine speed 1800rpm, and main measured parameters are cylinder pressure, fuel consumption rate, CO, HC, NOx and Soot emissions etc. Increase of suction air humidity from RH 50% to RH 90% does not effect specific fuel consumption, decreases maximum pressure in cylinder, ratio of maximum pressure rise and net heat release, and delays ignition timing. Also, that increases CO and HC emissions, decreases NOx emissions, but does not constant in changing tendency on emission.
Particulate matters (PM) that is generated by most diesel engine is regulated by the mass concentration measured by the conventional method it had been. Recently, Europe PMP (Particle Measurement Program) decided to start the regulation of vehicle's nano-sized particle number (PN) from the year of 2011 because of nano-particle's higher degree of harm to the human body. So firstly, the standard level of PN emission is introduced in the Euro 5/6 emissions regulation with a limit of $6{\times}10^{11}$ per km for light duty vehicle. Also KPMP(Korea Particle Measurement Program) was organized to copy quickly international technical trend. In this paper, it was investigated the nano-sized PN measurement characteristics for different particle generators between spray type and soot type. And the difference ratio between particle generators, the characteristic of PN concentration, counting efficiency and linearity was analyzed. Then, we make conclusions as followed. When particle diameter is increased, counting efficiency of two generators is decreased. Also Secondary calibration method is more higher 3% than Primary calibration method. Finally, SOF which is included in soot particles is not totally removed so it have great influence on test result of counting efficiency and linearity.
Inspection of vehicle systems is regularly performed by the state to ensure the emission status and the safety of vehicles. Thereby, the safety and quality of life can be improved by reducing green-house gases and fine dust, which are the main causes of vehicle defects and air pollution. This study analyzed the soot measuring probes used in the free acceleration mode method, at no-load condition, looking at the efficiency of a probe to measure soot emissions from diesel vehicles. In this study, a technique that can improve the inhalation efficiency of the probe over the (a) probes and the improved (b) probes was applied to probes (c). Probe (c) involves a structure designed close to the center of the circumference of the exhaust pipe. Results showed that the suction efficiency was improved by adding a variable center unit.
The rapid decrease of fossil fuel resources and increase of environmental pollution caused by aviation industries have become a severe issue which leads to an increase in the greenhouse effect. The use of biofuel becomes an option to alleviate issues related to unrenewable resources. This study presents a computational simulation of the biofuel combustion characteristics of various alternative fuels in an annular combustion chamber designed for training aircraft. The biofuels used in this study are Sorghum Oil Methyl Ester (SOME), Spirulina Platensis Algae (SPA) and Camelina Hydrotreated Esters and Fatty Acids (CHEFA). Meanwhile, Jet-A is used as a baseline fuel. The fuel properties and combustion characteristics are being investigated and analysed. The results are presented in terms of temperature and pressure profiles in addition to the formation of NOx and soot generated from the combustion chamber. Results obtained show that CHEFA fuel is the most recommended biofuel among all four tested fuels as it is being found that it burns with 37.6% lower temperature, 15.2% lower pressure, 89.5% lower NOx emission and 8.1% lower soot emission compared with the baseline fuel in same combustion chamber geometry with same initial parameters.
The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on exhaust emissions under four kinds of nozzle tip with the different fuel consumption rates are experimentally investigated by using an once-through boiler with a FGR system. The purpose of this study is to develop the FGR control system for reducing $NO_x$ emissions in boilers. Intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations, and equivalence ratio are considered to figure out the effect of FGR rate on exhaust emissions at various fuel consumption rates. It is found that $NO_x$ emissions are markedly decreased, while soot emissions are increased owing to the drop of intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations, and the rise of equivalence ratio as FGR rates are elevated. One can also conclude that the reduction in $NO_x$ emissions is more considerably influenced by the variation of equivalence ratio due to the FGR rate than the fuel consumption rate.
The use of electromagnetic wave has been interested in various energy industry because it enhances a flame stability and provides higher safety environments. However it might increase the pollutant emissions such as NOx and soot, and have harmful influence on human and environments. Therefore, it is very important to understand interaction mechanism between flame and electromagnetic wave from environmental point of view. In this study, an experiment was performed with jet diffusion flames induced by electromagnetic wave. Microwave was used as representative electromagnetic wave and a flickering flame was introduced to simulate the more similar combustion condition to industry. The results show that the induced microwave enhances the flame stability and blowout limit. The unstable lifted flickering flames under low fuel/oxidizer velocity is changed to stable attached flames or lift-off flames when microwave applied to the flames, which results from the abundance of radical pool. However, NOx emission was increased monotonically with increasing the microwave power as microwave power increased up to 1.0 kW. The effects might be attributed to the heating of combustion field and thermal NOx mechanism will be prevailed. Soot particle was examined at the post flame region by TEM grid. The morphology of soot particle sampled in the microwave induced flames was similar to the incipient soot that is not agglomerated and contain a lots of liquid phase hydrocarbon such as PAH, which soot particle formed near reaction zone is oxidized on the extended yellow flame region and hence only unburned young particles are emitted on the post flame region.
Combustion characteristics of gasoline/ethanol fuel were investigated both numerically and experimentally for vehicle fire safety. The numerical simulation was performed on the well-stirred reactor (WSR) to simulate the homogeneous gasoline engine and to clarify the effect of ethanol addition in the gasoline fuel. The simulating cases with three independent variables, i.e. ethanol mole fraction, equivalence ratio and residence time, were designed to predict and optimized systematically based on the response surface method (RSM). The results of stoichiometric gasoline surrogate show that the auto-ignition temperature increases but NOx yields decrease with increasing ethanol mole fraction. This implies that the bioethanol added gasoline is an eco-friendly fuel on engine running condition. However, unburned hydrocarbon is increased dramatically with increasing ethanol content, which results from the incomplete combustion and hence need to adjust combustion itself rather than an after-treatment system. For more tangible understanding of gasoline/ethanol fuel on pollutant emissions, experimental measurements of combustion products were performed in gasoline/ethanol pool fires in the cup burner. The results show that soot yield by gravimetric sampling was decreased dramatically as ethanol was added, but NOx emission was almost comparable regardless of ethanol mole fraction. For soot morphology by TEM sampling, the incipient soot such as a liquid like PAHs was observed clearly on the soot of higher ethanol containing gasoline, and the soot might be matured under the undiluted gasoline fuel.
