Study of Combustion and Emission Characteristics for DI Diesel Engine with a Swirl-Chamber

  • Gas motion within the engine cylinder is one of the major factors controlling the fuel-air mixing and combustion processes in diesel engines. In this paper, a special swirl-chamber is designed and applied to a DI (direct injection) diesel engine to generate a strong swirl motion thus enhancing gas motion. Compression, combustion and expansion strokes of this DI diesel engine with the swirl-chamber have been simulated by CFD software. The simulation model was first validated through comparisons with experimental data and then applied to do the simulation of the spray and combustion process. The velocity and temperature field inside the cylinder showed the influences of the strong swirl motion to spray and combustion process in detail. Cylinder pressure, average temperature, heat release rate, total amount of heat release, indicated thermal efficiency, indicated fuel consumption rate and emissions of this DI diesel engine with swirl-chamber have been compared with that of the DI diesel engine with $\omega$-chamber. The conclusions show that the engine with swirlchamber has the characteristics of fast mixture formulation and quick diffusive combustion; its soot emission is 3 times less than that of a $\omega$-chamber engine; its NO emission is 3 times more than that of $\omega$-chamber engine. The results show that the DI diesel engine with the swirl-chamber has the potential to reduce emissions.

  • A compression ignition type of diesel engine makes fuel efficiency better and $CO_2$ in the exhaust gas lower. Also it is suitable to apply alternative fuels(blended fuel) to the engine. The objective of this study is the emissions reduction of diesel engine with EF(Emulsified fuel). The emulsified fuel consists of diesel and peroxide($H_2O_2$) and Soot reduction without worsening of NOx emissions can be achieved by using thermal decomposition of the peroxide, i.e. the chemical effect of the OH radical in actual engine. For manufacturing emulsified fuel, a surfactant which is comprised of span 80 and tween 80 mixed as 9:1, was mixed with a fixed with 3% of the total volume in the emulsion fuel. In addition, considering the mixing ratio of the surfactant, the mixing ratio of $H_2O_2$ in the emulsified fuel was set as EF0, EF2, EF12, EF22, EF32, and EF42, respectively. Consequently, this study aims to obtain the optimization of fuel design(mixing) for the emulsified fuel applying to the diesel engine.

바이오연료의 디젤엔진 적용에 관한 실험연구 (An Experimental Study on Application of Biofuel to Diesel Engine)

  • Compared to gasoline engines, diesel engines with a relatively simple ignition system are more advantageous in the application of biodeisel fuel to engine. Then in this study the comparative analysis on the spray characteristics and combustion emissions characteristic between the biodiesel(soybean oil) and diesel, the fuel for commercial diesel engine, was performed with common rail injection system. Injection pressure and ratio of biodiesel blended fuel were selected as main experimental variables. Consequently, it can be found that there is no significant difference in the macro characteristics of the spray behavior(spray penetration and spray angle) in response to change in the blend ratio of soybean oil and diesel at a fixed injection pressure, in particular, soot creation in combustion emissions in the region of low pressure was greatly affected by the blend ratio of soybean oil, however, the creation in the region of high pressure was almost unaffected by the blend ratio because of promoted atomization.

  • This paper described the effect of the multiple injections on the emission characteristics and combustion stability in a common rail diesel engine. In order to investigate the influence of multiple injections in a passenger car diesel engine, the injection strategy was varied with pilot injection, post injection and one main injection at various conditions. Based on the experimental results, the combustion and emissions characteristics were analyzed for the various injection strategies such as main, pilot-main, double-pilot-main, double- pilot-main-post injection strategy. It is revealed that the $NO_X$, HC and CO emissions are reduced by double pilot and post injection at medium load, however, soot emission is increased. Also, in the case of multiple injection, the combustion pressure is increased smoothly near the TDC and the coefficient of variation and fuel consumptions are decreased.

  • As world attention has focused on global warming and air pollution, high efficiency diesel engines with low $CO_2$ emissions have become more attractive. Premixed diesel engines in particular have the potential to achieve the more homogeneous mixture in the cylinder which results in lower NOx and soot emission. Early studies have shown that the operation conditions such as the EGR, intake conditions, injection conditions and compression ratio are important to reduce emissions in a PCCI (Premixed Charge Compression Ignition) engine. In this study a modified cam was employed to reduce the effective compression ratio. While opening timing of the intake valve was fixed, closing timing of the intake valve was retarded $30^{\circ}$. Although Atkinson cycle with the retarded cam leads to a low in-cylinder pressure in the compression stroke, the engine work can still be increased by advanced injection timing. On that account, we investigated the effects of various injection parameters to reduce emission and fuel consumption; as a result, lower NOx emission levels and almost same levels of fuel consumption and PM compared with those of conventional diesel engine cam timing could be achieved with the LIVC system.

  • Multidimensional simulation has been carried out to be clear the role of initial combustion in a marine diesel engines on reduction of NOx and soot emissions by different pilot injection condition. Pilot injection can shorten the ignition delay, thus it reduces the premixed combustion phase. Since most NOx is formed during premixed combustion, pilot injections is one of reliable strategies to reduce the NOx. The formation of NOx consists of that formed by pilot injection and that formed by main injection. The result explains that 25-3-75 among the pilot injection conditions is effective to reduce the NOx, due to optimal combination pilot injection with main injection. The purpose of this study is to explain the characteristics of combustion with pilot injection of the marine diesel engine on reduction of exhaust emissions by examining the combustion process in a cylinder and to explore the formation mechanism of NOx between pilot injection and main injection.

  • An experimental study was performed to assess the effect of diesel and JP-8 aviation fuel on the spray characteristics, performance and emissions in a single cylinder optical diesel engine. Both fuels were injected via an 8-hole solenoid-driven injector in a common-rail injection system. For better understanding of spray development, the macroscopic images were captured with high speed camera, offered evidences for the results of performance and emissions. From macroscopic spray images, the spray tip penetration of JP-8 shorter than that of diesel while spray angle of JP-8 was wider than that of diesel. It indicates that the vaporization of JP-8 is superior to that of diesel. The lower cetane number of JP-8 resulted in increased portion of premixed combustion. The IMEP with JP-8 is lower than that of diesel-fueled engine. Especially, using JP-8 has a potential for reducing soot.

  • This study describes the effect of EGR rate on the combustion and emissions characteristics of a four cylinder CRDI diesel engine using biodiesel (soybean oil) blended diesel fuel. The test fuel is composed of 30% biodiesel and 70% ULSD (ultra low sulfur diesel) by volumetric ratio. The experiment of engine emissions and performance characteristics were performed under the various EGR rates. The experimental results showed that ignition delay was extended, the maximum combustion pressure and heat release gradually were decreased with increasing EGR rate. Comparing biodiesel blended fuel to ULSD, the injection quantity of biodiesel blended fuel was further increased than ULSD. The emission results showed that $NO_x$ emission of biodiesel blended fuel becomes higher according to the increase of EGR rate. However, in the case of biodiesel blended fuel, HC, CO and soot emissions were decreased compared to ULSD.

  • The objective of this research is to investigate the impact of engine oil aging on PM(Particulate Matter), exhaust gases, and DPF. It is widely known that the specification of a lubricant and its consumption in an ICE considerably influences the release of regulated harmful emissions under normal engine operating conditions. Considering DPF clogging phenomena associated with lubricant-derived soot/ash components, a simulated aging mode is designed for DPF to facilitate engine dynamometer testing. A PM/ash accumulation cycle is developed by considering real-world engine operating conditions for the increment of engine oil consumption and natural DPF regeneration for ash accumulation. The test duration for DPF aging is approximately 300 h with high- and low-SAPs engine oils. Detailed engine lubricant properties of new and aged oils are analyzed to evaluate the effect of engine oil degradation on vehicle mileage. Furthermore, physical and chemical analyses are performed using X-CT, ICP, and TGA/DSC to quantify the engine oil contribution on the PM composition. This is achieved by sampling with various filters using specially designed PM sampling equipment. Using high SAPs engine oil causes more PM/ash accumulation compared with low SAPs engine oils and this could accelerate fouling of the EGR in the engine, which results in an increase in harmful exhaust gas emissions. These test results on engine lubricants under operating conditions will assist in the establishment of regulated and unregulated toxic emissions policies and lubricant quality standards.

초고압 연료분사장치 디젤기관의 연소특성에 관한 연구(I) (A Study on the Combustion Characteristics of Ultra High Pressure Fuel Injection System in a Diesel Engine(I))

  • The purposes of this study were to evaluate engine performance and to analyze smoke emission characteristics for varied injection pressures and engine operating conditions of an electronically-controlled ultra high pressure fuel injection system(UHPFIS). It was discovered that the engine performance with the present UHPFIS was far better than what was initially expected. And the UHPFIS permitted engine operation at air/fuel ratios richer than 20 : 1 without increasing smoke emissions. It was discovered that the indicated mean effective pressure was increased, while the specific fuel consumption and the amount of soot were decreased, as the fuel rail pressures were improved atomization of the fuel spray. As the intake air temperature was increased from $38\sim205^{\circ}C$ in 38 degree increments, the indicated mean effective pressure was dropped while the specific fuel consumption was increased.
