Synthetic aperture sonars as well as side scan sonars or multibeam echo sounders have been commercialized and are widely used for seafloor imaging. In Korea related research such as the development of a towed synthetic aperture sonar system is underway. In order to obtain high-resolution synthetic aperture sonar images, it is necessary to accurately estimate the platform motion on which it is installed, and a precise underwater navigation system is required. In this paper we are going to provide reference data for determining the required navigation accuracy and precision of navigation sensors by quantitatively analyzing how much distortion of the sonar images occurs according to motion characteristics of the platform equipped with the synthetic aperture sonar. Five types of motions are considered and normalized root mean square error is defined for quantitative analysis. Simulation for error analysis with parameter variation of motion characteristics results in that yaw and sway motion causes the largest image distortion whereas the effect of pitch and heave motion is not significant.

This study introduces a complete feature map building method of sonar sensors for mobile robots. This method enhances the reality of feature maps by extracting even circle features as well as line and point features from sonar data. Edge features are, moreover, generated by combining line features close to circle features extracted around comer sites. The uncertainties of the specular reflection phenomenon and wide beam width of sonar data can be, therefore, reduced through this map building method. The experimental results demonstrate a practical validity of the proposed method in those environments.

In order to measure the distance from the bottom in the ocean we use ultrasound altitude sonars. The manganese nodule pick-up device developed by KRISO is also using an altitude sonar to control the gap between the pick-up head and sea bottom. This paper describes the performance of the altitude sonar by an experimental method. The experiment was performed with four ground models in a small basin, Manganese nodule models and water-bentonite mixture was used for setting up the ground models. Buttorworth filter was applied to remove the noise caused by a servo motor and its controller. The results show that the altitude sonar gives a good estimation of the types and slopes of the bottom as well as the distance.
The combination of Multi-Beam Echo Sounder swath bathymetry and high-resolution towed Sidescan sonar provides a powerful method of examination about hydrographic survey results. In this paper, we investigate the fast method of 3D bathymetric reconstruction with the Digital Sidescan sonar(Benthos SIS 1500) and Shallow Multi-Beam Echo Sounder(Reson Seabat 8125). The Seabat 8125 is a 455KHz high resolution focused Multibeam echo sounder(MBES) system which measures the relative water depth across a wide swath perpendicular to a vessel's track. The Benthos SIS1500 is a chirp(nominal fq. 200KHz) sonar which map the topographical features & sediment texture of ocean bottom using backscattered amplitude. We generates the very large 3D bathymetric texture mapping model with the Helical System's HHViewer and describes additional benefits of combining MBES and Sidescan Sonar imagery, the removal of geometric distortions in the model and a deterministic sounding noise.

This study introduces a robust feature detector for sonar data from a general fixed-type of sonar ring. The detector is composed of a data association filter and a feature extractor. The data association filter removes false returns provided frequently from sonar sensors, and classifies set of data from various objects and robot positions into a group in which all the data are from the same object. The feature extractor calculates the geometries of the feature for the group. We show the possibility of extracting circle feature as well as a line and a point features. The proposed method was applied to a real home environment with a real robot.
Target/Nontarget classification can be divided into the study of shape estimation of the target analysing reflected echo signal and of type classification of the target using acoustical features. In active sonar system, the feature vectors are extracted from the signal reflected from the target, and an classification algorithm is applied to determine whether the received signal is a target or not. However, received sonar signals can be distorted in the underwater environments, and the spatio-temporal characteristics of active sonar signals change according to the aspect of the target. In addition, it is very difficult to collect real sea-trial data for research. In this paper, target/non-target classification were performed using real sea-trial data. Feature vectors are extracted using MFCC(Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients), filterbank energy in the Fourier spectrum and wavelet domain. For the performance verification, classification experiments were performed using backpropagation neural network classifiers.

A piezoelectric flextentional sonar transducer has been simulated using a coupled FE-BEM. The dynamics of the sonar transducer is modelled in three dimensions and is analyzed with external electrical excitation conditions. Different results are available such as steady-state displacement modes, underwater directivity patterns. It is shown that the present barrel-stave sonar transducer of the piezoelectric material produces flextentional displacements which could be related with higher output power, lower quality factor and more omnidirectional beam pattern than other types of sonar transducers.

This paper discribes a sonar-based certainty grid, the probabilistic representation of the uncertain and incomplete sensor knowledge, for autonomous mobile robot navigation. We use sonar sensor range data to build a map of the robot's surroundings. This range data provides information about the location of the objects which may exist in front of the sensor. From this information, we can compute the probability of being occupied and that of being empty for each cell. In this paper, a new method using Bayesian formula is introduced, which enables us to overcome some difficulties of the Ad-Hoc formula that has been the only way of updating the grids. This new formula can be applied to other kinds of sensors as well as sonar sensor. The validity of this formula in the real world is verified through simulation and experiment. This paper also shows that a wide angle sensor such as sonar sensor can be used effectively to identify the empty area, and the simultaneous use of multiple sensors and fusion in a certainty grid can improve the quality of the map.

A mobile robot in FMS environment should be able to nevigate itself. Therefore, path planning is necessary for the mobile robot to perform its tasks without being lost. Path planning using a network model gives oprimal paths to every pair of nodes but building this model demands accurate information of environments. In this paper, a method to build a network model using sonar sensors is presented. The main idea is to build a quad tree model by using sonar sensors and convert the model to a network model for path planning. The new method has been implemented on a mobile robot. Experimental results show that the mobile robot constructs an accurate network model using inaccurate sonar data.

Underwater sensor accuracy test which measures the detection range and bearing accuracies of sonar simulates sonar transmitting ping and underwater radiating noise of target vessels. In this test, because the position of sonar target is the reference position of test, the sonar target position should be precisely estimated. Hence, this paper suggests to apply USBL algorithm which adopts cross phase spectrum of received sensor signals, and presents its performance by range and bearing estimation simulations. As a result of simulations, suggested algorithm shows good accuracy for underwater sensor accuracy test near 5㏈ SNR.
