Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a common hydrophilic polymer that is synthesized through the saponification reaction of poly(vinyl ester)-based polymers, mostly using poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) as a precursor. The heterogeneous saponification reaction of poly(vinyl ester)-based films leads to PVA films with new surface properties. Cellulose acetate (CA), in which the hydroxyl group of cellulose is replaced by an acetyl group, is a typical cellulose derivative capable of overcoming the low processability of cellulose due to strong hydrogen bonding. In this study, P(VAc/VPi)/CA blended films were prepared by the solvent casting, and then PVA/Cellulose blended films with improved surface properties were prepared by heterogeneous saponification. The structural changes caused by heterogeneous saponification were confirmed by FT-IR analysis, where both saponification and deacetylation reactions occurred in the saponification solution. In addition, the surface property changes were analyzed by FE-SEM and contact angle analyses, and the transmittance changes of the modified films were also assessed.

Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) has been most widely used due to its advantages such as good biodegradability, controllable rate of degradation and metabolizable degradation products. We manufactured composite scaffolds of PLGA scaffold penetrated DBP gel (PLGA/DBP gel) by a simple method, solvent casting/salt leaching prep of PLGA scaffolds and subsequent soaking in DBP gel. Chondrocytes were seeded on the PLGA/DBP gel. The mechanical strength of scaffold, histology (H&E, Safranin-O, Alcian-blue) and immunohistochemistry (collagen type I, collagen type II) were performed to elucidate in vitro and in vivo cartilage-specific extracellular matrices. It was better to keep the characteristic of chondrocytes in the PLGA/DBP gel scaffolds than that PLGA scaffolds. This study suggests that PLGA/DBP gel scaffold may serve as a potential cell delivery vehicle and a structural basis for in vivo tissue engineered cartilage.

Poly(ether block amide) (PEBA)/poly(dimethyl-siloxane) (PDMS) blend membranes (PEBA : PDMS = 5 : 2, 6 : 1 wt%) were prepared through the solution-casting and phase inversion process in order to demonstrate their superior performance in carbon dioxide separation. PDMS and PEBA (4033) were also prepared by the same method using n-butanol as a solvent. To study the gas permeation properties, the membranes were characterized with SEM and tested with carbon dioxide and nitrogen at $35^{\circ}C$ and pressure ranging from 3 to 5 atm. In conclusion, PEBA/PDMS blend membranes were shown to have selectivity for $CO_2/N_2$ separation that is 4 to 5 magnitudes greater than that of PDMS membrane at 3 atm.
Ipriflavone (IP), a non-hormonal isoflavone derivative, has been shown to interfere with bone remodeling by inhibiting bone resorption and stimulating bone formation. IP consistently increased the amount of Ca incorporated into the cell layer by mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). In this study, we developed the novel IP loaded poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) scaffolds for the possibility of the application of the tissue engineered bone. IP/PLGA scaffo1ds were prepared by solvent casting/salt leaching method and were characterized by porosimeter, scanning electron microscopy, determination of residual salt amount, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffractometer, respectively. IP/PLGA scaffolds were implanted into the back of athymic nude mouse to observe the effect of IP on the osteoinduction compared with control PLGA scaffo1ds. Thin sections were cut from paraffin embedded tissues and histological sections were stained H&E, von Kossa, and immunohistochemical staining for Type I collagen and osteocalcin. It can be observed that the porosity was above 91.7% and the pore size was above 101 $\mu\textrm{m}$. Control scaffo1d and IP/PLGA scaffo1ds of 50% IP were implanted on the back of athymic nude mouse to observe the effect of IP on the induction of cells proliferation for 9 weeks. The evidence of calcification, osteoblast, and osteoid from the undifferentiated stem cells in the subcutaneous sites and other soft connective tissue sites having a preponderance of stem cells has been observed. From these results, it seems that IP plays an important role for bone induction in IP/PLCA scaffolds.

Porous carbon electrode for electrosorption was prepared by a wet phase inversion method. Carbon slurry that was a mixture of activated carbon powder(ACP) and PVdF solution was cast directly upon a graphite sheet by means of a casting knife. Porous carbon electrodes were fabricated by immersing the cast film in pure water as a non solvent. Physical and electrochemical properties of carbon electrodes prepared with various ACP contents(50.0, 75.0, 83.3, 87.5, 90.0 wt %). From the SEM images we can verify that the electrode was porous. The average pore sizes determined for the electrodes fabricated with various ACP contents ranged from 72.7 to 86.4 nm and the size decreased as the ACP content increased. The electrochemical properties were characterized by cyclic voltammetry(CV) method. All of the voltammograms showed typical behavior of an electric double layer charging/discharging on the carbon surface. The capacitance increased with the ACP content and the values ranged from 2.18 F/cm$^2$ for 50 wt% ACP to 4.77 F/cm$^2$ for 90 wt% ACP.
We fabricated sponge and poly(lactide-co-glycolide)(PLGA) scaffolds impregnated demineralized bone particle(DBP)(DBP/PLGA) and investigated proper condition to proliferation and phenotype maintenance of intervertebral disc(IVD) cells by comparison between DBP/PLGA scaffold and DBP sponge. DBP/PLGA scaffolds were prepared by solvent casting/salt leaching. Human IVD cells were seeded in scaffolds of two types. Cell viability and proliferation according to scaffolds were analyzed by WST assay and SEM. RT-PCR was assessed to measure mRNA expression of aggrecan and type II collagen of human IVD cells. In WST assay results, cell viability in scaffolds impregnated DBP/PLGA scaffold were higher than DBP sponge. We could observe that disc cell mRNA expressed better in DBP/PLGA scaffold than DBP sponge. We concluded that the using of DBP/PLGA in terms of scaffold fabrication for bio-disc with human IVD cells is helpful growth of disc cells maintenance of phenotypes.
Thermal behavior of poly (methyl methacrylate) was analyzed in the presence of tin (IV) chloride. Five different proportions - polymer to additive - were selected for casting films from common solvent. TG, DTG and DTA were employed to monitor thermal degradation of the systems. IR and py-GC-MS helped identify the decomposition products. The blends start degrading at a temperature lower than that of the neat polymer and higher than that of the pure additive. Complex formation between tin of additive and carbonyl oxygen (pendent groups of MMA units) was noticed in the films soon after the mixing of the components in the blends. The samples were also heated at three different temperatures to determine the composition of residues left after the expulsion of volatiles. The polymer, blends and additive exhibited a one step, two-step and three-step degradation, respectively. $T_0$ is highest for the polymer, lowest for the additive and is either $60^{\circ}C$ or $70^{\circ}C$ for the blends. The amount of residue increases down the series [moving from blend-1 (minimum additive concentration) to blend-5 (maximum additive concentration)]. For blend-1, it is 7% of the original mass whereas it is 16% for blend-5. $T_{max}$ also goes up as the concentration of additive in the blends is elevated. The complexation appears to be the cause of observed stabilization. Some new products of degradation were noted apart from those reported earlier. These included methanol, isobutyric acid, acid chloride, etc. Molecular-level mixing of the constituents and "positioning effect" of the additive may have brought about the formation of new compounds. Routes are proposed for the appearance of these substances. Horizontal burning tests were also conducted on polymer and blends and the results are discussed. Activation energies and reaction orders were calculated. Activation energy is highest for the polymer, i.e., 138.9 Kcal/mol while the range for blends is from 51 to 39 Kcal/mol. Stability zones are highlighted for the blends. The interaction between the blended parts seems to be chemical in nature.

Tissue engineering techniques require the use of a porous biodegradable/bioresorbable scaffold, which server as a three-dimensional template for initial cell attachment and subsequent tissue formation in both in vitro and in vivo. Small intestinal submucosa (SIS) has been investigated as a source of collagenous tissue with the potential to be used as biomaterials because of its inherent strength and biocompatibility. SIS-loaded poly(L-lactide-co-glicolide)(PLGA) scaffolds were prepared by solvent casting/particle leaching. Characterizations of SIS/PLGA scaffold were carried out by SEM, mercury porosimeter, and so on. Muscle-derived stem cells can be differentiated in culture into osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and even myoblasts by the controlling the culture environment. Cellular viability and proliferation were assayed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium-bromide(MTT) test. Osteogenic differential cells were analyzed by alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity. SIS/PLGA scaffolds were implanted into the back of athymic nude mouse to observe the effect of SIS on the osteoinduction compared with controlled PLGA scaffolds. Thin sections were cut from paraffin embedded tissues and histological sections were conducted hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Trichrome, and von Kossa. We observed that bone formatioin of SIS/PLGA hybrid scaffold as natural/synthetic scaffold was better thean that of only PLGA scaffold. It canb be explained that SIS contains various kinds of bioactive molecules for osteoinduction.
High speed steels (HSS) were used as cutting tools and wear parts, because of high strength, wear resistance, and hardness together with an appreciable toughness and fatigue resistance. Conventional manufacturing process for production of components with HSS was used by casting. The powder metallurgy techniques were currently developed due to second phase segregation of conventional process. The powder injection molding method (PIM) was received attention owing to shape without additional processes. The experimental specimens were manufactured with T42 HSS powders (59 vol%) and polymer (41 vol%). The metal powders were prealloyed water-atomised T42 HSS. The green parts were solvent debinded in normal n-Hexane at $60^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours and thermal debinded at $N_2-H_2$ mixed gas atmosphere for 14 hours. Specimens were sintered in $N_2$, $H_2$ gas atmosphere and vacuum condition between 1200 and $1320^{\circ}C$. In result, polymer degradation temperatures about optimum conditions were found at $250^{\circ}C$ and $480^{\circ}C$. After sintering at $N_2$ gas atmosphere, maximum hardness of 310Hv was observed at $1280^{\circ}C$. Fine and well dispersed carbide were observed at this condition. But relative density was under 90%. When sintering at $H_2$ gas atmosphere, relative density was observed to 94.5% at $1200^{\circ}C$. However, the low hardness was obtained due to decarbonization by hydrogen. In case of sintering at the vacuum of $10^{-5}$ torr at temperature of $1240^{\circ}C$, full density and 550Hv hardness were obtained without precipitation of MC and $M_6C$ in grain boundary.
Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) with 50~100 nm diameter were manufactured from micro-size cellulose by an application of a high-pressure homogenizer at 1,400 bar. High strength nanopapers were prepared over a filter paper by a vacuum filtration from CNF suspension. After reinforcing and dispersing CNF suspension, hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based composites were tailored by solvent- and film-casting methods, respectively. After 2, 4, 6 and 8 passes through high-pressure homogenizer, the tensile strength of the nanopapers were extremely high and increased linearly depending upon the pass number. Chemical modification of 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyl-triethoxysilane (PFDTES) on the nanopapers significantly increased the mechanical strength and water repellency. The reinforcement of 1, 3, and 5 wt% CNF to HPC and PVA resins also improved the mechanical properties of the both composites.
