  • Paint must be resistant to the wear and tear of the atmosphere and should maintain its color and finish for a long time. The solvents of paints were organic solvent and water, common artificial source of VOCs(Volatile organic Solvent) include organic solvent. Using of organic solvent paint was decreased in the interior parts of automotive, exterior parts were still used organic solvent paint. Adhesive strength of water-paint was poor to compare with organic solvent paint and peeled off from the base materials, it was big quality problem. In this study, adhesive characteristics of water-paint and silane mixture was investigated. To improve adhesive strength of water-paint, it was necessary to mixing of adhesive material. Adhesive strength was measured using UTM(Universal Test Instrument) by ASTM D1002 and Peeling off condition was by ASTM D3359. Optimal mixing condition of water-paint and silane adhesive were $25^{\circ}C$, 500rpm, 20min., concentration of silane adhesive was 5 wt%.

  • The effect of surfactant mixture 9on detergency and soil redeposition in a dry-cleaning system was investigated employing Aerosol OT as an anionic surfactant and Span 80 as a nonionic surfactant. The effect of charge system on soil deposition was also investigated in order to determine the optimum condition at which soil redeposition is minimum,. Soil deposition instead of soil redeposition on cotton, polyester and wool fabrics was measured employing petroleum solvent and perchloroethylene as organic solvents. The results were as follows. 1. Surface tension or interfacial tension was not changed by the addition of any surfactant or surfactant mixtures. In petroleum solvent however interfacial tension between solrent and water decreased when surfactants were added and increased when surfactants were mixed,. 2. The maximum amount of water solubilization increased as the mole fraction of Aerosol OT increased and more water was solubilized in petroleum solvent than in perchloroethylene. 3. The detergency of cotton was greater and the soil deposition rate was lower in Span 80 solution than in Aerosol OT solution. The soil deposition on cotton fabric decreased when water was solubilized in Aersol OT solution 4. The detergency and soil deposition rate of polyester fabric did not change by the surfactant type of the addition of surfactant mixture and soil deposition rate increased bywater solubilization. 5. Soil deposition on wool fabric was very high when Arosol OT was employed in perchloroethylene and the soil deposition did not change greatly by water solubilization.

  • The separation behaviour of Mo and W from sulfuric acid solution by solvent extraction with Alamine 336 was investigated as a function of solution pH and extractant concentration. Selective extraction of Mo over W by Alamine 336 was obtained in the pH range of 3-5 with low amine concentration. The mixture of Alamine 336 and acidic extractants improved the separation factor between Mo and W and was in the following order: D2EPHA > PC88A > Decanol > Versatic acid. The stripping efficiency of Mo and W from the loaded mixture of Alamine 336 and D2EHPA was very poor, while complete stripping of Mo and W was possible from the mixture of Alamine 336 and Decanol by using a mixture of $NH_4OH$ and $NH_4Cl$.

  • Separating a mixture having an azeotrope or low relative volatility with single distillation column is difficult. Separating water-acetic acid mixture and water-ethanol mixture with a distillation column consumes a lot of energy. Pervaporation membrane can be used to separate the mixture in the concentration region where separation is difficult with distillation. We simulated a distillation-membrane hybrid process where membrane is located on the head of the distillation column for efficient separation of water-acetic acid and water-ethanol mixture. Permeability data were obtained from experiments and literature. We formulated an optimization problem for the process with total annual cost (TAC) as an objective function and major design variables as optimization variables. Major optimization variable affecting TAC of the hybrid process was shown to be distillate concentration. We also suggested a simplified optimization procedure to get a close-to-optimal solution.

  • Various single solvents were tested to find the effective solvent for the extraction of algae oil from wet-form Chlorella minutissima. In the case of single solvents, their extractabilities for algae oil were increased with their polarity because the water in wet algae cell is to form a solvent shell around the lipids. Based on these results, the wet-form algae samples were treated with a polar alcohol solvent and then a nonpolar solvent was added in algae residue. In the algae oil extraction by ethanol/n-hexane, total lipid contents were 40-50% and composition of triglyceride in extracted oil was 46.50%. Considering solvent toxicity of conventional solvent mixture such as chloroform and methanol for algae oil extraction, the ethanol/n-hexane system was identified as the effective one for the oil extraction from wet-form Chlorella minutissima.

  • A new combined method including the enzymatic hydrolysis of $\beta$-cyclodextrin ($\beta$-CD) and solvent extraction fo cholesterol from the hydrolyzed mixture was developed to recover cholesterol from a $\beta$-CD-cholesterol complex prepared from dairy products, such as cream, milk, and cheese. Cyclomaltodextrinase (cyclomatodextrin dextrin hydrolase, EC 3.2.1.54, DCase_ prepared form alkalophilic Bacillus sp. KJ 133 hydrolyzed the $\beta$-DC of the $\beta$-CD-cholesterol complex, and then, free cholesterol was efficiently extracted from the hydrolyzed mixture by a nonpolar solvent such as ethyl acetate. To increase the stability of free CDase, immobilized CDase was developed using sodium alginate as a carrier. The immobilized CDase showed a high recovery yield of cholesterol in a time-dependent manner compared to the free CDase. A gas chromatography analysis showed that more than 70% of cholesterol was recovered from the $\beta$-DC-cholesterol complex of cream by the immobilized CDase, whereas only 3% and 29% of cholesterol were recovered when the solvent extraction and free CDase treatment were used, respectively. The cholesterol recovered can be used as a raw material for steroid synthesis. Furthermore, this method can be an efficient way to recover cholesterol or other organic compounds that are bound in a $\beta$ -DC-cholesterol or -organic compound complex.

  • Solid dispersion is one of well-established pharmaceutical techniques to improve the dissolution and consequent bioavailability of poorly water soluble drugs. It is defined as a dispersion of drug in an inert carrier matrix. Solid dispersions can be classified into three generations according to the carrier used in the system. First and second generations consist of crystalline and amorphous substances, respectively. Third generation carriers are surfactant, mixture of polymer and surfactants, and mixture of polymers. Solid dispersions can be generallyprepared by melting method and solvent method. While melting method requires high temperature to melt carrier and dissolve drug, solvent method utilizes solvent to dissolve the components. The improvement in dissolution through solid dispersions is attributed to reduction in drug particle size, improvement in wettability, and/or formation of amorphous state. The primary characteristics of solid dispersions, the presenceof drug in amorphous state, could be determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In spite of the significant improvement in dissolution by solid dispersion technique, some drawbacks have limited the commercial application of solid dispersions. Thus, further studies should be conducted in a direction to improve the congeniality to commercialization.

  • The autoignition temperaturs (AIT) of solvent mixture is important index for the safe handling of flammable liquids which constitute the solvent mixtures. This study measured the AIT and ignition delay time for Propionic acid and 3-Hexanone system by using ASTM E659 apparatus. The AITs of Propionic acid and 3-Hexanone which constituted binary system were $511^{\circ}C$ and $425^{\circ}C$, respectively. The experimental AIT of Propionic acid and 3-Hexanone system were a good agreement with the calculated AIT by the proposed equations with a few average absolute deviation (A.A.D.). And Propionic acid and 3-Hexanone system was shown the minimum autoignition temperature behavior (MAITB).

  • Large-scale resolution of epoxides by the yeast Rhodotorula glutinis was demonstrated in an aqueous/organic two-phase cascade membrane bioreactor. Due to the chemical instability and low solubility of epoxides in aqueous phases, an organic solvent was introduced into the reaction mixture in order to enhance resolution of epoxide. A cascade hollow-fiber membrane bioreactor was used (i) to minimize the toxicity of organic solvents towards the epoxide hydrolase of Rhodotorula glutinis, and (ii) to remove inhibitory amounts of formed diol from the yeast cell containing aqueous phase. Dodecane was selected as a suitable solvent and 1,2-epoxyhexane as a model substrate. By use of this membrane bioreactor, highly concentrated (0.9 M in dodecane) enantiopure (>98% ee) (S)-1,2-epoxyhexane (6.5 g, 30% yield) was obtained from its racemic mixture.
