New polysulfone scintillation proximity membranes were prepared by impregnating Cerium Activated Yttrium Silicate (CAYS), an inorganic fluor, in a membrane structure. The membranes were applied to detect the radionuclide contamination directly without the aid of a scintillation cocktail. The preparation of membranes was divided into two processes. A supporting polymer film was made of casting solutions consisting of polysulfone and solvent, their cast film being solidified by vacuum evaporation. CAYS-dispersed polymer solutions were cast over the first, solidified polymer films and coagulated either by evaporating solvent or by exchanging solvent in the solution with nonsolvent in a coagulation bath. The prepared membranes had two distinguished, but tight1y attached, double layers: one is the supporting layer of dense polymer film and the other the detecting layer consisting of CAYS and polymer. The radionuclide counting results revealed that the prepared membranes were efficient to monitor radioactivity contamination with reliable counting ability.

The preparation and characterization of new polymer composite membranes containing polyphenylene oxide (PPO) thin films with hetropoly acid (HPA) are presented. PPO thin films with phosphotungstic acid (PWA) or phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) have been prepared by using the solvent mixture. The PWA and PPO can be blended using the solvent mixture, because PPO and PWA are not soluble in the same solvent. In this study, methanol was used as a solvent dissolving PWA and chloroform was used as a solvent dissolving PPO. PPO-PWA solutions were cast onto a glass plate with uniform thickness. The composite membranes were prepared by casting Nafion mixture on porous PPO-PWA films. The morphology and structure of these PPO-PWA films were observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The composite membranes were characterized by measuring their ion conductivity and methanol permeability. The performance was evaluated with composite membranes as electrolytes in fuel cell conditions. The methanol cross-over of composite membranes containing PPO-PWA barrier films in the DMFC reduced by 66%.

The effects of methyl isobutyl ketone(MIBK)/ethanol(EtOH) solvent mixtures on the dispension, particle size distribution and rheology of $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ nonaqueous suspensions were investigated by measuring sedimentation density and viscosity. The sedimentation density of $Al_2$O$_3$ and ZrO$_2$ particles increased in MIBK-rich($\geq$60 vol%) solvents with 'Hypermer' KD-1 as a dispersant. The ball-milled suspensions in 80MIBK/20EtOH(vol%) solvent exhibited the narrow and unimodal particle size distribution. Although all Suspensions exhibited the Pseduo-Plastic flow(Shear thinning) the shear thinning behavior was somewhat different depending on the mixture ratio of $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ and MIBK/EtOH. Under a given shear rate( <300 s$^{-1}$ for $Al_2$O$_3$; <3000 s$^{-1}$ for ZrO$_2$) the strongest shear thinning appeared in the $Al_2$O$_3$ and ZrO$_2$ suspensions with pure MIBK solvent. The shear thinning was nearly independable on the mixture ratio of $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ in case of using the identical solvent(80MIBK/20EtOH, vol%).
The matrices which consisted of SiC whisker, PES(polyesterasulfone) as a binder, span 80(sorbitan monooleate) as a surfactant, TPP(triphenyl phosphate) as a plasticizer and dichloromethane as a solvent, have been prepared by the various methods such as tape casting, rolling, tape cast-coating and roll-coating method. The fuel cells of single stack type using these matrices are characterized by ac impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry technique. A fuel cell using a matrix prepared by the tape cast-coating method shows the best performance of 466.34 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 0.6V because it has the lowest polarization resistance at the interface between electrodes and a matrix due to the largest three phase contact region of gases, catalyst and electrolyte.
High purity alumina has been extracted form low grade Korean alunite. Alunite ore was treated by 15% $NH_4OH$ solution, followed by 10% $H_2SO_4$ leaching and metallic impurities such as Fe and Ti were removed by solvent extraction method. Alumina prepared by the extraction process was 99.9% in purity. Hot Petroleum Drying Method has been employed for the preparation of uniformly fine alumina powder, using chemical reagent aluminum sulfate and ammonium aluminum sulfate extrated from Korea alunite. The sinterability of alumina powder prepared by Hot Petroleum Drying Method was shown to be improved in comparison with the one treated by other methods such as ball milling method, but dry pressing was difficult due to the agglomeration of calcined powder. The best slip of alumina powder prepared by Hot Petroleum Drying Method contained a lower soild content than the one treated by other methods. The alumina body formed by soild and drain casting with the former alumina powder showed a higher sintered density.
Novel porous composite ceramic bone scaffolds composed of biodegradable PHBV(polyhydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) and TA(toothapatite) have been fabricated for bone tissue engineering by a modified solvent casting and particulate leach-ing method with salt-contained heat compression technique. The results of this study suggest that the PHBV-TA composite scaffold, especially the scaffold containing 30 weight$\%$ of TA may be a good candidate far bone tissue engineering of non-load bearing area in oral and maxillofacial region.

Preparation of asymmetric polyimide membranes by the phase inversion process was investigated to develop ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and pervaporation membranes for organic solutions, using a commercially available solvent-soluble polymaide. The influences of the various factors such as the composition of a cast solution, casting conditions, gelating solutions and others on membrane structure and performance were studied in detail, and it was made clear that a wide variety of asymmetric polyimide membranes ranging from UF to RO for organic solutions could be prepared from the aromatic polyimide used. It was also found that the chemical stability and separation performance of the asymmetric polyimide membranes could be improved by annealing in a liquid or a vacuum at above 200$\circ$. The membrane annealed at 300$\circ$ in a vacuum exhibited the separation factor $\alpha(H_2O/EtOH)$ of 900 with the flux of 1.0 kg/$m^2\cdot h$ at 60$\circ$C for an aqueous ethanol solution of 95 vol%.

Composite membranes having different mixing ratio of Wool(SCMK) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) were prepared by dissolving wool/PET in hexafluoro-2-propanol(HFIP), casting the obtained solution on a glass plate and evaporation the solvent in the presence and absence of an electric field. The internal structure of the prepared membrane was investigated using polarise microscope dyeing and dye permeation method. In the composite membrane prepared under electric field, both components were micro mixing, while in the membranes prepared under nonelectric field, the two components formed a random sea/island structure according to different mixing ratio. Such characteristic membrane structure was influenced the permeation behavior of C.I. Acid Red 118 through the membranes from an aqueous solution.

The protective layer of AC-PDP was fabricated by laminating an MgO green sheet. The MgO green sheet was made by coating MgO solution composed of solvent, dispersant, binder, and MgO nano-powder. The MgO solution was coated by the die casting method on the base film. We fabricated three kinds of MgO green sheets of which thicknesses were 20, 28, and $40\;{\mu}m$, respectively. The MgO nano-powder showed lower CL intensity and ${\gamma}i$ than the e-beam MgO. The MgO green sheet applied panels showed low luminance and current density. The efficiency was almost same as the conventional e-beam MgO panel.

We have successfully fabricated the alumina thick films using inkjet printing processes without a high temperature sintering process. Alumina suspension as dielectric ink was formulated by combining nano-sized alumina powders with an anionic polymer dispersant in formamide/water as co-solvent. The thickness of the printed alumina thick film was measured at around 5 um by field emission scanning electron microscope. The calculated packing density of 68.5 % from the printed alumina thick film was much higher than the same films fabricated by conventional casting or dip coating processes. Q factor of the dielectrics thick film infiltrated with cyanate ester resin was evaluated by impedance analyzer.
