  • Bromolactonization of 2-Substituted-1-cyclohexenyl-1-acetic acid (1) with 1,3-dibromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (dibromantin) in N,N-dimethylformamide gave the corresponding ${\gamma}-bromo-{\beta}-lactone$ (2) and ${\beta}-bromo-{\gamma}-lactone$ (3). The effect of the substituents, the reaction temperature, and the solvent on the regioselectivity was discussed.

  • Waterborne Polyurethane dispersions continue to show growth in commercial usage due to the ever increasing environmental legislation to reduce VOC in Coating and adhesive materials. The transition from solvent-based to waterborne Polyurethane(WPu) has also been facilitated by advances in both the chemistry and technology employed and the formulation expertise required. • The reaction of $CpMo(CO)_3-M^+(M^+,\;Li^+,\;Na^+,\;K^+,\;PPN^{+a})$ with allyl halide was performed and the details of its counterion effects and solvent effect was investigated under the pseudo-first order conditions. The kinetic data from this reaction were compared with those from the reaction of the same anion with benzyl halides in terms of their inverse counterion effects.

  • A model based on two coupled generalized Langevin equations is proposed to investigate the trans-stilbene photoisomerization dynamics. In this model, a system which has two independent coordinates is considered and these two system coordinates are coupled to the same harmonic bath. The direct coupling between the system coordinates is assumed negligible and these two coordinates influence each other through the frictional coupling mediated by solvent molecules. From the Hamiltonian which is equivalent to the coupled generalized Langevin equations, we obtain the transition state theory rate constants of the stilbene photoisomerization. The rates obtained from this model are compared to experimental results in n-alkane solvents.

  • Solvatochromic effect and hydrogen bonding interaction of NPNOH, NPNO- and NPNOR were investigated. Electronic transition energies of the dyes were plotted against empirical solvent polarity parameters, Taft's π* and Reichardt's ET(30). Good correlations were observed when the excitation energies were plotted against the energy calculated by multiple linear regression method which was developed by Taft. There is an intrinsic difference between betaine for ET(30) polarity scale and the azoderivative, which is derived from the specific hydrogen bond incurred with probe molecules and solvents. The hydrogen bonding plays a very important role for stabilization of an excited state molecule by solvents especially when a solute possesses a negative charge as with NPNO-.

  • A comprehensive theory of the spin coating technique has been reviewed and the basic principles and parameters controlling the process are clearly highlighted, which include spin speed, spin time, acceleration and fume exhaust. The process generally involves four stages: a dispense stage, substrate acceleration stage, a stage of substrate spinning at a constant rate and fluid viscous forces dominate fluid thinning behaviour and a stage of substrate spinning at a constant rate and solvent evaporation dominates the coating thinning behaviour. The study also considered some common thin film defects associated with this technique, which include comet, striation, chucks marks environmental sensitivity and edge effect and possible remedies.

  • Nucleophilic substitution reaction of dansyl chloride with anilines in various solvents have been investigated. The Bronsted ${\beta}$ and Hammett ${\rho}_N$ values indicated that the bond formation is advanced more than the bond breaking at the transition state. Solvatochromic correlations also predicted the importance of bond formation at the TS, showing a greater contribution of polarity (${\pi}^{\ast}$) compared to hydrogen bond donor acidity (${\alpha}$). The effect of solvent on rate was found to violate the reactivity-selectivity principle.

  • At pH 7.4 (physiological pH), skin is permselective to cations, due to the net negative charge of the current passing channels (pores) in skin. This causes the convective solvent flow (electroosmotic flow) from anode to cathodal direction. In this work, we have investigated several factors (pH. current density and ionic strength) that can affect the electroosmotic flow. (omitted)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the efficacy of antifungal and antibacterial activity of Veratri Herba, which was used as insecticide in the clinical part of oriental dermatology for a long time. Sample herb was selected with Veratrum maackii in the middle of 5 veratrum species. The experimental results of this herb were as follows. Crude extract showed various relative inhibitory rates from 68.9% to 95.6% in 2mg/disc against Fusarium oxysporum, Botrytis cineria, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Escherichiae coli, and Bacillus subtilis on the basis of inhibitory range against B. cineria, and the inhibitory effect was decreased depending on density. In the extract of various organic solvent, chloroform and ethyl acetate fraction show the various size of dear zone against all microbes. And in the subfraction assay from ethyl acetate fraction, crude alkaloids show the antibacterial and antifungal effect significantly.
