  • The increasing use of plastics in food packaging materials has led to the issue of food-packaging mutual interactions from residues in the plastics. Plastic films are commonly printed by using solvent-based ink to decorate the packaged food for consumer attention. However, the residual solvents can not be completely removed and they can migrate into the contained food which lead to undesirable off-flavors. Partitioning (Kp) of printing ink solvents was studied in two types of plastic films with different chemical structure and polarity. At $25^{\circ}C$, Kp of toluene is higher than that of isopropanol in PP, but isopropanol showed higher Kp value than toluene in EVOH. This showed that polarity had a significant effect on the partitioning of printing ink solvents into the plastic films. Printing solvents had a higher affinity to the polymer with similar polarity than it did to the different one.

  • The methanol extract of Albizzia julibrissin Durazz. (Leguminosae) was successively partitioned into dichloromethane, ethylacetate, butanol (BuOH) and water fractions, and the effects of the each solvent extract on catecholamine biosynthesis in PC12 cells were investigated. Among them, the BuOH fraction $(5{\mu}g/ml\;medium)$ showed 68.8% and 63.6% inhibition on dopamine and norepinephrine content in PC12 cells, respectively. Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) activity was also reduced markedly by treatment of the BuOH fraction (41.8% inhibition at $5{\mu}g/ml$ in the medium). Each solvent fraction did not show cytotoxicity towards PC12 cells by trypan blue exclusion test. This result suggests that the BuOH fraction has an inhibitory effect on catecholamine biosynthesis by reducing TH activity in PC12 cells.

  • This report has been focused on the studies of the hydraulic pressure distribution which is created by the agitation of the both liquids, dialysing solution and solvent, on either side of the dialysis membrane surface. Agitators of the both liquids have been investigated and developed which can counterbalance the hydraulic pressures. The effects of the agitation velocities on the dialysing velocity have been studied under the conditions which allow the uniform dialysis on the whole surface of the dialysis membrane. Each agitation velocity of the dialysing solution and solvent, at which the dialysis coefficient is obtained most precisely, has been determined.

  • This study shows the research of causes of deterioration of the amber from foreign cases. It also presents the conservation treatment as well as tests to examine the effect of the organic solvents on the amber in order to find reversible and safe reinforcing agent which will prevent further damage of the artefact. The result showed that there was no noticeable change in the weight of the artefact as well as on the appearance of the surface when Mineral spirit(White spirit), which is aliphatic hydrocarbon group, and Xylene, aromatic hydrocarbons group was applied. Reinforcement and restoration was carried out using Paraloid(R) B67, which has a broad option for the solvent, in Xylene. Finally, it is recommended that the use of polar organic solvent in the conservation treatment of amber artefacts should be limited.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the fruits of Ligustrum japonicum. The crude extract was successively fractionated into n-hexane, 85% aqueous methanol (85% aq.MeOH), n-butanol (n-BuOH), and water fractions by means of solvent polarity. The crude extract and its solvent fractions were evaluated for their antioxidant effect by four different assay systems: scavenging power on peroxynitrite and intralcellular ROS produced in HT-1080 cells; DNA oxidation inhibition; ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The n-BuOH fraction exhibiting potent antioxidant activity was further purified by C18 silica gel column chromatography and RP-HPLC to give tyrosol (1) and salidroside (2). The structure of isolated compounds was determined by extensive 2 D NMR experiments such as $^1H$ COSY, NOESY, HSQC and HMBC as well as by comparison with the published spectral data.

  • To investigate the effects of co-solvents on the morphology of nano-scale zein materials, zein solutions were electrospun with different co-solvent ratios of EtOH/$H_2O$. Different zein solution concentrations were used to study the effects of the zein content on the electrospun materials. The resulting electrospun materials were all characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The diameters of the electrospun nanoparticles and nanofibers were found to increase when increasing the EtOH ratio at certain zein concentrations. Furthermore, increasing the zein content changed the morphology of the electrospun materials from nanoparticles to nanofibers.

  • In order to study how and why the stabilities of lanthanoid(III) complexes in solutions vary across the series, the formation constants of the adducts of tris(2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato)lanthanoids(III) with seven carboxylic acids in chloroform have been determined by solvent extraction technique at 298K. The formation constants with carboxylic acids generally decrease with increasing the atomic number, but in the middle of the series, they change only slightly. Such trends have been interpreted as related to a change of the coordination number in the middle of the series. It has been attempted to determine the number of water molecules coordinated to the adducts as well as $Eu(TTA)_3$ in chloroform by measuring the fluorescence life time of europium(III), to ensure the assignment of the coordination number.

  • An analytical method for determining potential endocrine disruptors (bisphenol A, 2-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, pentachlorophenol, p-t-butylphenol, p-pentylphenol, p-hexylphenol, p-t-octylphenol, p-heptylphenol, nonylphenol) by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and High Perfomance Liquid Chromatography(HPLC) equipped with fluorescence and variable wavelength detector has been developed. The SPE process for sample concentration was performed on a commercially available Oasis HLB cartridge packed with polymeric sorbents. The effect of elution solvent and elution volume on the recoveries of the analytes were investigated with HPLC. Average recovery of >85% was achieved with 60mg sorbents using 5mL of methanol as elution solvent. Phenolic compounds in canned drinks, beverages and water samples were surveyed by this proposed method.

  • The apparent molal volumes ${\phi}_v$ of a series of homologous tetraalkylammonium chlorides, $Me_4NCl, Et_4NCl, Pr_4NCl,\;and\;Bu_4NCl$, in a series of isopropanol-water mixtures have been determined at $30^{\circ}C$ from precision density measurements using pycnometers. The values of ${\phi}_v$ extrapolated to infinite dilution give partial molal volumes $\={V}^{\circ}$s which are almost additive for successive homologues and enable one to determine the absolute individual ionic partial molal volumes. The experimental results are discussed in terrns of the varying size and surface charge of the ions and the structure of the binary solvent mixtures. The results indicate that at 0.1 mole fraction isopropanol the maximum structuredness of water causes a minimum in the tetraalkylammonium-cation partial molal volumes, while at 0.2 mole fraction the solvent structure is such that the free volumes is a minimum and the electrostrictive effect of chloride ion is a maximum.

  • The cis → trans thermal isomerization of azobenzene derivatives has been studied. A sizable solvent effect on the rates for thermal isomerization of push-pull azobenzenes are observed. It is suggested that the isomerization proceeds via a rotational mechanism. For non push-pull azobenzenes, the lack of solvent effects on the rate of isomerization was observed. This suggests that the isomerization proceeds via an inversional mechanism for non push-pull azobenzenes.
