Ammonium sulfate synthesized by the air oxidation methods without catalyst using the reaction vessel which was fitted with fritted glass at the bottom of it and introducing, through the bottom, ammonia and air with constant flow rates to sulfurous acid solution of constant concentrations at the given temperatures. The experiment showed that the oxidation process was accelerated in accord with the increase of the air flow rates when the ammonia flow rate was constantly kept at ca. 100ml/min. in high temperatures. When the pH of the solution reached 9.0, the oxidation was nearly completed. It is assumed that in the process of reaction, $[O_{2}{\to}HSO_{3}^-]^{\neq}$ would be produced as an activated complex and the reaction was thought to be first order. The experiment indicated that the 0.5M sulfurous solution could be oxidized up to 98.54% at the flow rates of ammonia and air, 100ml/min., and 4l/min., respectively at $50^{\circ}C$.
The anodic degradation of benzoquinone(BQ), a model compound for wastewater treatment was carried out using a home-made flow-through electrochemical cell with carbon fibers. To optimize the controlled current electrolysis condition of an aqueous BQ solution, the experimental variables affecting the degradation of BQ, such as the applying current, pH, reaction time, and flow rate of the BQ solution were examined. The degradation products of the oxidation reaction were identified by High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer. Low molecular weight aliphatic acids, and CO2 were the major products in this experiment. The removal efficiency of BQ from the solution increased with the applying current and time. 99.23% of 1.0 × 10-2 M BQ was degraded to aliphatic acids and CO2 when the applying current is 175 mA in a 12 hr electrolysis.
The problem of phase change from liquid to solid in the inviscid plane-stagnation flow is theoretically investigated. The solution at the initial stage of freezing is obtained by expanding it in powers of time, and the final equilibrium state is determined from the steady-state governing equations. The transient solution is dependent on the three dimensionless parameters, but the equilibrium state is determined by one parameter of (temperature ratio/conductivity ratio). The effect of the fluid flow on the growth rate of the solid in the pure conduction problem can be clearly seen from the solution of the initial stage and the final equilibrium state. The characteristics of the transient heat transfer at the surface of the solid and the liquid side of the solid-liquid interface for all the dimensionless parameters are elucidated.
Solutions of inviscid rotational flows near the corners of an arbitrary angle and within a triangle of arbitrary shapes are presented. The corner-flow solutions has a rotational component as a particular solution. The addition of irrotatoinal components yields a general solution, which is indeterminate unless the far-field condition is imposed. When the corner angle is less than 90$^{\circ}$the flow asymptotically becomes rotational. For the corner angle larger than 90$^{\circ}$it tends to become irrotational. The general solution for the corner flow is then applied to rotational flows within a triangle (Method I). The error level depends on the geometry, and a parameter space is presented by which we can estimate the error level of solutions. On the other hand, Method II employing three separate coordinate systems is developed. The error level given by Method II is moderate but less dependent on the geometry.
Continuation power flow is a tool that can trace the path of the solution from the base stable solution. However, the base stable solution cannot be calculated when the initial system load is too large to operate at a stable operating point. This case is called as unsolvable case. This paper presents implementation of the optimal load shedding algorithm on continuation power flow. It performs steady-state analysis of power systems at unsolvable case that can occur in contingency analysis. Numerical simulation on 20-bus test system demonstrates that the continuation power flow applying the optimal load shedding algorithm is robust at solvable and unsolvable cases.
This study investigates the problem of phase change from liquid to solid in the inviscid stagnation flow. The solution of dimensionless governing equations is determined by the three dimensionless parameters of (temperature ratio/conductivity ratio), Stefan number, and diffusi-vity ratio. The solution at the initial stage of freezing is obtained by expanding it in powers of time, and the final equilibrium state is determined from the steady-state governing equations. The equilibrium state is dependent on (temperature ratio/conductivity ratio), but is independent of Stefan number and diffusivity ratio. The effect of fluid flow on the pure conduction problem can be clearly seen from the solution of the initial stage and the final equilibrium state, and the characteristics of the solidification process for all the dimensionless parameters are elucidated.

The effect of antifreeze solution liquid film on the frost prevention is experimentally investigated. It is desirable that the antifreeze solution spreads widely on the heat exchanger surface forming thin liquid film to prevent frost nucleation while having small thermal resistance across the film. A porous layer coating technique is adopted to improve the wettability of the antifreeze solution on a parallel plate heat exchanger. The antifreeze solution spreads widely on the heat exchanger surface with $100{\mu}m$ thickness by the capillary force resulted from the porous structure. It is observed that the antifreeze solution liquid film prevents a parallel plate heat exchanger from frosting. The reductions of heat and mass transfer rate caused by the thin liquid film are only $1{\sim}2%$ compared with those for non-liquid film surface.
This study was conducted to test the applicability of hydroxy radical reactor system, which applied advanced oxidation processes, to sterilize pathogenic bacteria for nutrient solution recycling in closed hydroponics. Removal efficiency was tested on 25 L of nutrient solution maxed with 10 mL culture solution of bacteria, E. coli, and R. solanacearum in a pilot tank. The testing conditions included various levels of hydroxy radicals resulting from air flow rates of 40, 80, and $120L\;min^{-1}$, and 12 hours processing time. The removal of bacteria, E. coli, and R. solanacearum by hydroxy radical in nutrient solution was significantly increased with an increase in the flow rate of the air from $40L\;min^{-1}$ to $120L\;min^{-1}$. The optimum removal efficiency was achieved at an air flow rate of $120L\;min^{-1}$ for 2 hours treatment. There were no significant differences in removal efficiency among bacteria, E. coli, and R. solanacearum for tested level and time of hydroxy radical. These results verified the efficiency of hydroxy radical in removing the pathogenic bacteria and the applicability of hydroxy radical reactor system in the field.
Since it is difficult to expect the normal production of plants in greenhouses during hot summer season in Korea, certain provisions on the control of extreme environmental factors in summer should be considered for the year-round cultivation in greenhouses. This study was carried out to find a method to suppress the temperature rising of nutrient solution by cooling, which is able to contribute to the improvement of the plant growth environment in hydroponic greenhouse during hot summer season. A mechanical cooling system using the counter flow type with double pipe was developed for cooling the nutrient solution efficiently. Also the heat transfer characteristics of the system was analysed experimentally and theoretically, and compared with the existing cooling systems of nutrient solution. The cooling capacities of three different Systems, which used polyethylene tube in solution tank, stainless tube in solution tank, and the counter flow type with double pipe, were evaluated. The performance of each cooling system was about 41 %, 70% and 81 % of design cooling load in hydroponic greenhouse of 1 ,000m$^2$ on the conditions that the flow rate of ground water was 2m$^3$/hr and the temperature difference between two liquids was 10 ˚C According to the results analysed as above, the cooling system was found to have a satisfactory cooling capability for regions where ground water supply is available. Fer the other regions where ground water supply is restricted, more efficient cooling System should be developed.
