The conventional approach to evaluate the contaminant transport in soils adopts the macro-scale implementation while the pore configuration and network is a dominant factor to determine the fate of contaminant. However, the observation of fate and transport at pore scale may not be readily approachable because of the computational expenses to solve Navier-Stokes equation. We herein present the 2D Lattice-Boltzmann method that enables to assess the local fluid velocity and density efficiently for the case of single phase and multi-components. The solute fate spatio-temperal space is explicitly determined by the advection of fluid flow. Two different types of idealized pore space provides the path of fluid. Also, solute transport, the velocity field and average concentration of solute are computed in steady state. Results show that the pore geometry such as tortuosity mainly affect the solute fate. It highlights the significance of the pore configuration and shape in granular soils and rock discontinuity in spite of the equivalent porosity.

A simple mathematical model for gacilitated mass transport with a fixed site carrier membrane was derived by assuming an instantaneous, microscopic concentration (activity) fluctuation, The concentration fluctuation, developed due to reversible chemical reaction between carrier and solute, could acuse the higher chemical potential gradient and the facilitated transport. For mathematical formulation, an analogy was employed between the mass transfer for the facilitated transport with fixed site carrier membrane and the electron transfer in a parallel resistor-capacitor (RC) circuit. For the single RC model, it was assumed that a single capacitor represented the total carrier and a solute could not inter-diffuse between matrix and carrier, allowing only two diffusional pathways, This assumption was relaxed by adopting a serial combination of the parallel RC circuit. Here, a solute diffuses in two elements (matrix or carrier) can exchange its pathway, exhibiting four diffusional pathways. The current models were examined against experimental data and the agreement was exceptional.
In this study, a numerical simulation technique for coastal area where wave and current interactions are observed is proposed. Considering the spatial scale of coastal area and the coastal processes such as wave, current, shoaling, wave breaking, and inundation processes, boussinesq equation model is used. A depth-integrated transport model based on the consistent assumption with the boussinesq equation model is used for the prediction of solute transport. To solve the equations, finite volume method with an approximate riemann solver is used. The proposed model is applied to a coastal area and reasonable computational results are obtained.
Chemical and isotopic variations of snowmelt provide important clues for understanding snowmelt processes and the timing and contribution of snowmelt to catchment or watershed in spring. The newly developed model includes a hydraulic exchange between mobile and immobile water (${\omega}$), and isotopic exchanges between both mobile water and ice ($f_1$) and immobile water and ice ($f_2$). Since the new model is based on the mobile-immobile water conceptualization, which is widely used for describing chemical tracer transport in snow, it allows simultaneous calculations of chemical as well as isotopic variations in snowpack discharge. We compare the model results with a study of solute transport and isotopic evolution of snowmelt in snow, using artificial rain-on-snow experiments with conservative anion ($Br^-$). These observations are used to test the newly developed model and to better understand physical processes in a seasonal snowpack where our model simulates the chemical and isotopic variations.
Monitoring solute transport has been known to be difficult especially for the unsaturated soil. The object of this study is to investigate the TDR application to monitoring solute concentration in the vadose zone. The TDR calibration test was conducted for soil samples with various water contents and concentrations. The voltage attenuation of electromagnetic wave of TDR was used to estimate the bulk electrical conductivity of a soil. The relationship between the bulk soil electrical conductivity and the solute concentration was assumed to be linear at a constant volumetric soil water content. In this study four proposed relationships were compared using data obtained from KCI solution at three different concentrations. Relationships given by Topp, Daltaon, Yanuka showed the linearity between the bulk soil electrical conductivity and the solute concentration, which were more pronounced than Zegelin's. The three relationships were found to be useful to measure the solute concentration in the vadose zone. In addition, TDR method was proven to be a viable technique in monitoring solute transport through unsaturated soils in transient flow condition.
In many solute transport studies, either flux or resident concentration has been used. Choice of the concentration mode was dependent on the monitoring device in solute displacement experiments. It has been accepted that no priority exists in the selection of concentration mode in the study of solute transport. It would be questionable, however, to accept the equivalency in the solute transport parameters between flux and resident concentrations in structured soils exhibiting preferential movement of solute. In this study, we investigate how they differ in the monitored breakthrough curves (BTCs) and transport parameters for a given boundary and flow condition by performing solute displacement experiments on a number of undisturbed soil columns. Both flux and resident concentrations have been simultaneously obtained by monitoring the effluent and resistance of the horizontally-positioned TDR probes. Two different solute transport models namely, convection-dispersion equation (CDE) and convective lognormal transfer function (CLT) models, were fitted to the observed breakthrough data in order to quantify the difference between two concentration modes. The study reveals that soil columns having relatively high flux densities exhibited great differences in the degree of peak concentration and travel time of peak between flux and resident concentrations. The peak concentration in flux mode was several times higher than that in resident one. Accordingly, the estimated parameters of flux mode differed greatly from those of resident mode and the difference was more pronounced in CDE than CLT model. Especially in CDE model, the parameters of flux mode were much higher than those of resident mode. This was mainly due to the bypassing of solute through soil macropores and failure of the equilibrium CDE model to adequate description of solute transport in studied soils. In the domain of the relationship between the ratio of hydrodynamic dispersion to molecular diffusion and the peclet number, both concentrations fall on a zone of predominant mechanical dispersion. However, it appears that more molecular diffusion contributes to the solute spreading in the matrix region than the macropore region due to the nonliearity present in the pore water velocity and dispersion coefficient relationship.
An analytical model for predicting the convection-diffusion of solute dumped in a homogeneous open sea of constant water depth has been developed in a time-integral form. The model incorporates spatially uniform, uni-directional, mean and oscillatory currents for horizontal convection, the settling velocity for the vertical convection, and the anisotropic turbulent diffusion. Two transformations were introduced to reduce the convection-diffusion equation to the Fickian type diffusion equation, and then the Galerkin method was then applied via the expansion of eigenfunctions over the water column derived from the Sturm-Liouville problem. A series of calculations has been performed to demonstrate the applicability of the model.
In order to provide for the guidance on groundwater quality monitoring network design and also, to suggest the index to the solution of the contaminated groundwater remediation problems in the lake watershed, it is necessary to analyze the contaminant transport in the groundwater. The solute transport was analyzed in the lake watershed to investigate the behavior of the injected contaminant sources depend on the relationships between the point of contaminant sources and position of the lake. Three hypothetical groundwater flow systems, which is composed of a flow-through lake and two solute sources, were considered. The lakes located in the upper, middle, and lower portions of a watershed respectively. The transported contaminant was numerically simulated for five years by using MT3D contaminant transport model under the three-dimentional steady state conditions. From the above simulations, it can be concluded that the contaminant concentration was high as the contaminant source located at the upper position of a watershed, and the influence of the contaminant injection was large as the solute source located at the lower position. When the injection of contaminant was continued for one year without regard to the position of contaminant source and the lake, the influence of contaminant source was reached to bedrock.

Coastal aquifers may serve as major sources fur freshwater. In many coastal aquifers, intrusion of seawater has become one of the major constraints imposed on groundwater utilization. The management of groundwater in coastal acquifers means making decision as to the pumping rate and the spatial distribution of wells. Several numerical techniques for flow and solute transport simulation can provide the means to achieve this goal. As a basic study to predict the intrusion of seawater in coastal phreatic aquifers, the coupled flow and solute transport analysis was conducted by use of the 3-D finite element code, SWICHA. In order to understand how the location and the shape of freshwater-seawater transition zone were affected by the boundary conditions and hydrogeologic variables, parametric study was carried out.
