  • In this study, in order to investigate a modeling technique of the structure with bolted joints, four kinds of finite element model are introduced; a solid bolt model, a coupled bolt model, a spider bolt model, and no bolt model. All proposed models take account on prestrained effect and contact behavior of flanges to be joined. Among these models, a solid bolt model, which is modeled by using a 3-D solid element and a surface-to-surface contact element between the head/nut and the flange interfaces, has the best accurate responses compared with the experimental results. In addition, coupled bolt model, which couples the degree of freedom between the head/nut and the flange, shows the best effectiveness and usefulness in view of computational time and memory usage. Finally, the bolt model proposed here is adopted for structural analysis of a large diesel engine of a ship consisting of several parts which is connected by long stay bolts.

  • A FE-(FE-HE)-BE procedure is presented for dynamic analysis of concrete arch dams. In this technique, dam body is discretized by solid finite elements, while the reservoir domain is considered by a combination of fluid finite elements and a three-dimensional fluid hyper-element. Furthermore, foundation rock domain is handled by three-dimensional boundary element formulation. Based on this method, a previously developed program is modified, and the response of Morrow Point arch dam is studied for various conditions. Moreover, the effects of canyon shape on response of dam, is also discussed.

  • Low-velocity impact on composite sandwich panel has been investigated. For the study, a finite element program is coded using 18-node assumed strain solid element and Newmark-beta method. Contact force is calculated from a proposed modified contact low. The finite element code is verified by solving typical example. The calculated impact behavior agreed well with experimental result.

(Coupled Model by Rigid and Solid bodies)에 의한 해석법을 제안하며, 간단한 모델의 예를 통해 검증하였다.

  • The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is evidently a powerful tool for the analysis of structural concrete having nonlinearity and brittle failure properties. However, the result of FEA of structural concrete is sensitive to two modeling factors: the shear transfer coefficient (STC) for an open concrete crack and force convergence tolerance value (CONVTOL). Very limited work has been done to find the optimal FE Modeling (FEM) methodologies for structural concrete members strengthened with externally bonded FRP sheets. A total of 22 experimental deep beams with or without FRP flexure or/and shear strengthening systems are analyzed by nonlinear FEA using ANAYS program. For each experimental beams, an FE model with a total of 16 cases of modeling factor combinations are developed and analyzed to find the optimal FEM methodology. Two elements the SHELL63 and SOLID46 representing the material properties of FRP laminate are investigated and compared. The results of this research suggest that the optimal combination of modeling factor is STC of 0.25 and CONVTOL of 0.2. A SOLID 46 element representing the FRP strengthening system leads to better results than a SHELL 63 element does.

  • The Finite Element Solutions Is reported on solid-liquid phase change in porous media with natural convection including freezing. The model is based on volume averaged transport equations, while phase change is assumed to occur over a small temperature range. The FEM (Finite Element Method) algorithm used in this study is 3-step time-splitting method which requires much less execution time and computer storage the velocity-pressure integrated method and the penalty method. And the explicit Lax-Wendroff scheme is applied to nonlinear convective term in the energy equation. For natural convection including melting and solidification the numerical results show reasonable agreement with FDM (Finite Difference Method) results.

  • Herein, we present effective polygonal finite elements to which the strain-smoothed element (SSE) method is applied. Recently, the SSE method has been developed for conventional triangular and quadrilateral finite elements; furthermore, it has been shown to improve the performance of finite elements. Polygonal elements enable various applications through flexible mesh handling; however, further development is still required to use them more effectively in engineering practice. In this study, piecewise linear shape functions are adopted, the SSE method is applied through the triangulation of polygonal elements, and a smoothed strain field is constructed within the element. The strain-smoothed polygonal elements pass basic tests and show improved convergence behaviors in various numerical problems.

  • The strength, deformation and buckling of a large engineering structure consisting of four ellipsoidal shells, two cylindrical shells with stiffening ribs and large holes, one conical shell and three pairs of large flanges under external pressure, self weight and heat sinks have been analysed by using two kinds of five different finite elements - four assumed displacement finite elements (shell element with curved surfaces, axisymmetric conical shell element with variable thickness, three dimensional eccentric beam element, axisymmetric solid revolutionary element) and an assumed stress hybrid element (a 3-dimensional special element developed by authors). The compatibility between different elements is enforced. The strength analyses of the top cover and the main vessel are described in the paper.

  • This paper examines feature-based reconstruction algorithm using feature-based modeling and based on topology optimization technology, which aims to achieve a minimal volume weight and to satisfy user-defined constraints such as stress, deformation related conditions. The finite element model after topology optimization allows us to remove some region of a solid model for predefined volume requirement. The stress or deformation distribution resulted from finite element analysis enables us to add some material to the solid model for a robust structure. For this purpose, we propose a feature-based redesign algorithm which inserts negative features to the solid model for material removal and positive features for material addition, and we introduce a bisection method which searches an optimal structure by iteratively applying the feature-based redesign algorithm. Several examples are considered to illustrate the proposed algorithms and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the present approach.

  • Rolling force in the direct rolling(or twin-roll strip continuous casting) process fo semi-solid material has been computed using rigid-viscoplastic finite element method. Temperature distributions for calculations of rolling force and roll deformation are obtained from thermofluid analysis. Three dimensional roll deformation analysis has also been performed by using commercial package ANSYS. From the results, behavior of metal flow, rolling force and roll deformation have been investigated according to the process conditions of semi-solid direct rolling.
