The objectives of this study were to evaluate applicability of food waste compost (FWC) as a substrate for cultivation of Ganoderma lucidum, Lentinula edodes, and Pholiota adipose, and to determine contents of Ca, Mg, Na, and K in fruiting bodies (FB). FB yield per substrate in FWC-free controls was $53{\pm}4g/kg$ for G. lucidum, $270{\pm}90g/kg$ for L. edodes, and $1,430{\pm}355g/kg$ for P. adipose. Substrates supplemented with FWC showed the highest FB production at FWC content of 10% for G. lucidum ($64{\pm}6g/kg$), and 13% for L. edodes ($665{\pm}110g/kg$) and P. adipose ($2,345{\pm}395g/kg$), which were 1.2~2.5 times higher than the values for the controls. P. adipose contained higher amounts of mineral elements than the other species. Ca, Mg, Na, and K content in FB did not show a significant relation to FWC content.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of several substrates; used rockwool, several spent mushroom composts, and common used media, such as rockwool and vermiculite, on growth and fruit quality of cucumber. Cucumber grew dramatically in the rockwool+peatmoss (1:2 v/v) (RP) and fine granular rockwool in hydroponic system using Yamaztiki's solution for cucumbers. The yield of cucumber fruit was highest in recycled winter mushroom compost (RW), and followed by 100% perlite (Par), recycled oyster mushroom compost (RO), and RR but there was no significant difference among these three media. Soluble solid and firmness were higher in Per and vermiculite (Ver), and any difference was not found among the others. Vitamin C was not influenced by kind of substrate. The results confirm that several reused or recycled substrates have high possibilities for use as medium for hydroponic culture in cucumber.
Manure compost is a main product from animal wastes in Korea. Solid manure is usually treated by aerobic composting at manure composting facilities for land reinforcement. Agricultural use of manure compost as organic fertilizer resources, mainly manure compost, is now recommended in Korea. This study investigated the evaluation of durability about the manure composting machinery and structures which was controlled by aeration and periodic agitating. The questionnaire addressed three main topics as follows: operating practices, machinery and maintenance of the manure composting facilities are being operated. A total of the 22 manure composting facilities in an agricultural cooperative were surveyed. The results obtained in this survey were summarized as follow: The major causes of manure composting apparatus trouble were corrosion and wear, overloading and foreign matter etc. The highly trouble frequency of the agitator, packer and conveyor were chain, agitating blade and shaft, motor and screw vane, respectively. These analytical results can be used as basic information to establish the maintenance control methods and durability standard of manure composting facility.
At present, in India, handling of solid waste has become a major challenge for the municipal authorities. Composting of solid waste, especially organic waste, can be one of the solutions to tackle the issue of handling solid waste. The present study is focused on agitated piles composting of flower waste (FW). Five combinations of FW with dry leaves (DL) and cow dung (CD) were prepared to conduct the study. Significant changes were observed due to the addition of bulking agent. The bulking material helps to reduce the production of leachate and also to maintain the aerobic condition within the piles. The reduction of total organic carbon was 21% in FW composting which increased by 36.48% during the composting of FW on addition of DL and CD. On the 120th day of composting, the pH of pile five (70 kg FW + 20 kg CD + 15 kg DL) was 7.33, electrical conductivity 2.77 mS/cm, total organic carbon 26.9%, total nitrogen 2.2%, and C:N ratio was 12. Appropriate proportion of waste mixture played an important role in providing favorable conditions for the microbial transformation of flower waste to stabilized compost. Finally, FW with the combination of CD and DL was found to be successful during pile composting.
In order to use the glutamic acid fermentation residuum in agriculture effectively, comparison experiments of the residua liquid and dried solid, and compost on radish (Raphanus Sativus) and chinese cabbage (Brassica chinesis) were carried out, together with an investigation on some physical property changes of soil brought about by the use of the residua and compost. 1. An equal or somewhat superior effect of the glutamic acid fermentation residua solid and liquid, to urea was observed. 2. Both residua liquid and dried solid, tended to acidify soil and the tendency was observed to be somewhat servere in the latter. 3. The liquid fermentation residuum compounded with minor elements such as iron, manganese, zinc, copper and boron increased the yield of chinese cabbage compared with the liquid residuum alone. 4. Not only as a N, K fertilizer, the liquid residuum of glutamic acid fermentation could also be used as a source for liquid or solid compound fertilizer.

To study the development of solid waste compost to use sewage sludge and paper mill sludge for reclaiming damage soil in forest, the changes of temperature, moisture, chemical properties, heavy metals and harmful compound during the aerobic decomposition were investigated, and the compost decomposition of final products investigated the round paper chromatography method and G.I(Germination index) value. The results were summarized as follows. Temperature was changed a little during early 5days because of air temperature too low. That was rapidly increased to over $50^{\circ}C$ at 4days after first turning and then decreased gradually fallen to $40{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ at 15days after aerobic decomposition in A and C treatments. The second turning was conducted at 18 days after aerobic decomposition, and then the temperature was little changed. At the compare first with terminal product, The moisture content was decreased all treatments but the change was little in A and B treatments. pH was decreased to below 1 in all treatments. EC was increased to below 5dS/m. The content of total carbon, C/N ratio, $NH_4{^+}-N$ were decreased with 4~7%, below 8 and below 500mg/kg in all treatments, respectively. The content of total nitrogen, $NO_3{^-}-N$, CEC were increased with below 0.5%, below 173mg/kg and over $30cmol^+/kg$ in all treatments, respectively. The content of heavy metals and harmful compound were similar during aerobic decomposition and suited to standard of 가 grade in all treatments. The result of round paper chromatography method and G.I. value, The C treatment concluded well aerobic decomposition. Especially, the G.I. value in C treatment was 64.1 and 66.2 at cabbage and grass, respectively.

Commercial inocula and mature compost were added separately to food wastes in order to compare the inoculating effect on garbage decomposition. Among commercial inocula available in the market, GM (Green Microorganisms) and EM (Effective Microorganisms) were selected as test inocula. Garbage decompostion were evaluated in Volatile Solid (VS) reduction and FDA (Fluorescein DiAcetate) hydrolysis activity. VS reduction with mature compost experiment was higher than that with GM-added one. VS reduction rates were about 32% with mature compost and 27% with GM. When food wastes were treated with GM and EM based on the manufacturer's specifications, GM-added and EM-added food wastes showed only 8% and 9% of VS reduction respectively, which are much lower than those with the mature compost. FDA hydrolysis activity increased during the first 10 days of active composting periods for the composting experiments, while it decreased continuously for the experiments based on manufacturer's specifications.
BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different organic treatments and a chemical fertilizer on the soil chemical, physical, and microbial properties in an organic pear orchard. METHODS AND RESULTS: Control was referred as a NPK chemical fertilizer (15N-9P-10K) and organic treatments included compost containing with oil cake, compost containing with humic acid, and compost containing with chitin substance. All treatments applied at rates equivalent to 200 g N per tree per year under the tree canopy in March 30 of 2008 and 2009. Soil bulk density, solid phase, liquid phase, and penetration resistance were not significantly different among the treatments. Organic treatment plots had greater organic matter, total nitrogen, potassium, and magnesium concentrations compared to control, and the nutrient concentrations were not consistently affected by the organic treatments. Microbial biomass nitrogen and carbon, dehydrogenase, acid-phosphatase, and chitinase activities overall increased from March to August. Organic treatments, especially compost containing with oil cake or chitin aicd, increased the microbial variables compared to control. CONCLUSION(s): All the organic treatments consistently stimulated soil biological activity. The consistent treatment effect, however, did not occur on the soil mineral nutrition as the trees actively taken up the nutrients during a growing season, which would have diminished treatment effects. Long-term study required for evaluating soil physical properties in a pear orchard.
The mycelial growth of Pleurotus ostreatus in compost is strongly stimulated by solid-state fermentation with thermophilic fungi which were isolated from oyster mushroom compost. The biochemical characteristics of these thermophilic fungi were investigated. Cellulase and ligninase activities were not detected by clear zone effect on CMC and lignin media. All of thermophilic fungi grew well with high mycelial density on xylan media and the growing rate of Sepedonium sp. S-2 observed very high. In results of MUF-test, extracellular enzyme activity of Sepedonium sp. S-2, and S-5 measured very high. On the compost after high temperature fermentation with Sepedonium sp. S-2 and S-5, the mycelial growing rate of Pleurotus ostreatus was increased about 50% and it also showed the inhibiting effect on mycelial growth of Trichoderma sp. SJG-51. Isolated thermophilic fungi, Sepedonium sp. S-2 and S-5 were expected as very useful organism for making oyster mushroom compost.
