  • The INHA Rocket Research Institute changed the Ceramic nozzle material of their developed Solid Composite Propellant Motor with Teflon nozzle material. Static firings of the new Solid Rocket Motors was conducted on Thurst Tester to validate the increase in performance. The new enhanced Solid Roket Motor increased the total impulse by 18.3 percent while improving its reliability. The new process of manufacture reduced the time to produce a nozzle.

  • We have analyzed the temperature and humidity aging test results of a composite solid propellant. The temperature aging test was performed to evaluate the storage life of a propellant, while the humidity aging test could provide the hygroscopicity of Ammonium Perchlorate(AP) exposed to .elative humidity (RH) 10, 30, $50\%$ environment. A specimen was used in the temperature test, and a block of propellant from the actual motor was used in the humidity test. We report that the 4-month storing at 60 degree is equivalent to the 10-year 60 degree condition. The composite solid propellant with HTPB binder showed signs of hardening with time lapse but the effect of humidity up to RH $50\%$ was not noticeable.

  • This paper presents a design of solid rocket motor with high length to diameter applied composite propellant. Solid rocket motor with high L/D ratio can be generated erosive burning and combustion instability on longitudinal mode. Especially, Erosive burning can effectively prolong the initial pressure spike in some star grain motors. That is, the study shows design of grain, internal ballistics and structural analysis in order to perform system requirements.

  • The most important thing is to analyze the Fast Cook Off problem of the solid motor case exposed to direct flame is a heat transfer analysis. Heat causes degradation and ignition of the propellant. To archive an acceptable reaction level in Fast Cook Off, the rocket motor case generally must fail structurally prior to propellant ignition. We investigate the responses of the solid motor case exposed to Fast Cook Off by using finite element method for the thermal analysis.

  • A qualification of propellant for a AKM(Apogee Kick Motor) has been conducted by firing standard motors. The Standard motor used in developing process of KSLV-I's AKM is ST-6 whose diameter is about six inches. HTPB composite propellant are used in these motors. Several standard motors are fired and compared with simulation results. A mean value of characteristic velocity is 1518 m/s. The characteristic value for prediction is 1516 m/s, and the thrust loss is about 5.9%. Differences between the measurements and prediction are less than 3%.

  • The basic research on AKM(Apogee Kick Motor) for space launch vehicle was carried out. AKM which will be used as 3rd stage solid rocket motor in 3-stage Korean Sounding Rocket(III) has been developing. KM is a solid rocket motor using composite propellant based on HTPB and is composed of composite motor case and submerged nozzle. To develop KM rocket motor satisfing a given set of requirement, firstly the full-scale KM with diameter 520mm was designed, then sub-scale motors reduced about 60% were manufactured and tested. Full-scale ground firing test is accomplished two times.

  • Bullet impact tests for two solid rocket motors were performed and its results were compared and analyzed. One was loaded with the existing propellant with decreased weight content of burning rate catalyst and added high density additives to improve mechanical properties and the other was loaded with the existing propellant with decreased weight content of burning rate catalyst to improve its insensitivity as well as to maintain the ballistic performance. The composite cases were used for both motors.

  • In this paper, step-curing, which includes the change of curing temperature on the curing process, was applied to reduce curing day of HTPB/AP based propellant. This study targets the improvement of productivity of HTPB/AP based solid rocket motor. Comparison of mechanical properties of propellant resulted in the change of normal curing condition (60℃, 5 days) to step-curing condition (60℃, 1 day / 65℃, 3 days). Post-cure test was conducted to determine the impact on the shelf life of the solid rocket motor. The aging characteristics of propellants were analyzed by measuring mechanical properties and thermal expansion factor. To step-cured propellant, accelerated aging test was performed for 12 weeks, followed by tensile test. Sm(bar) and Em(%) were higher than 8 bar and 40% each, showing excellent mechanical properties.
