  • This paper is concerned about a high speed electromagnet of Pressure control solenoid valve. Solenoid valve is controlled by means of Pulse width modulation. The magnetostatic field problem on a solenoid is numerically solved by the 2-D axisymmetric finite element method. And permeance method is adopted for analysing the static and dynamic property of solenoid part theoretically. In addition, in this study, experiments on solenoid part were performed in order to measure the magnetic force and plunger displacement. The numerical results coincided with the experimental results. As a result, the magnetic force has the linear relation with displacement of plunger and the primary factors on the performance of PWM type high speed electromagnet are coil resistance, plunger mass, and the length of air gap between plunger and core.

  • Magnetic levitation systems are required to have a large operating range in many applications. As one method to solve this problem, Time Delay Control (TDC) is applied to a single-axis magnetic levitation system in this paper A reduced-order observer is utilized to estimate states excluding measurable states in the control law. The system consists of a square air-core solenoid and a circular permanent magnet attached on a plastic ball. Theoretical magnetic forces of the system are obtained on the basis of the location of the magnet around the solenoid. The magnetic levitation force is obtained by the experiment, and then compared with the theoretical one. As the results of the control experiments, the nonlinear controller (TDC : 1-2 ㎜) has a larger operating range than the linear controller (PD control : 1-1.4 ㎜), and is superior to linear. control in the robustness to the modeling uncertainty and the performance of the disturbance rejection.

  • In this paper, the low power (1.5 W) solenoid-type magnetic thin-film transformers utilizing a $Ni_{81}Fe_{19)$ core material were designed and fabricated for 5 MHz-drive DC-DC converter application. The $20\mum$ thick copper films were used as the coils. The transformers fabricated in this work have the sizes of $3.08 mm\times25.5 mm\; and\; 6.15 mm\times12.75 mm.$ The optimum design of solenoid-type magnetic thin film transformers was performed utilizing the conventional equations, a Maxwell computer simulator (Ansoft HFSS V7.0 for PC), and parameters obtained from the magnetic properties of NiFe magnetic core materials. frequency characteristics of inductance, dc resistance (R), coupling factor (k) and gain of developed transformers were measured using HP4194A impedance and gain-phase analyzer. The fabricated transformers with the size of $6.15 mm\time12.75 mm$ exhibit the inductance of $0.83 \muH$, the dc resistance of $2.3\Omega$$\Omega$, the k of 0.91 and the gain of -1 dB at 5 MHz, which show the comparable results to those reported in the recent literatures. The measured high-frequency characteristics for the fabricated transformers agreed well with those obtained by theoretical calculations .

  • Ultra-small size, high-performance, solenoid-type RF chip inductors utilizing low-loss A1$_2$O$_3$ core materials were investigated. The dimensions of the RF chip inductors fabricated were 1.0mm${\times}$0.5mm${\times}$0.5mm and copper coils were used. The materials (96% A1$_2$O$_3$) and shape (I-type) of the core, the diameters (40${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and position (middle) of the coil, and the lengths (0.35mm) of solenoid were determined by a high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS) to maximize the performance of the inductors. The high-frequency characteristics of the inductance (L) and quality-factor (Q) of the developed inductors were measured using a RF impedance/material analyzer (E4991A with E16197A test fixture). The developed inductors exhibit an inductance of 11 to 11.3nH and a qualify factor of 22.3 to 65.7 over the frequency ranges of 250 MHz to 1.7 GHz, and show results comparable to those measured for the inductors prepared by Coilcraft$^{TM}$. The simulated data described the high-frequency data of the L and Q of the fabricated inductors well.

  • Mapping is a useful tool in the magnetic field analysis and design. In some specific research area, such as the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) or the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), it is important to map the magnetic field in the interesting space with high accuracy. In this paper, an indirect mapping method in the center volume of an air-core solenoid is presented, based on the solution of the Laplace's equation for the field. Through the mathematical analysis on the mapping calculation, we know that the condition number of the matrix, generated by the measurement points, can greatly affect the error of mapping result. Two different arrangement methods of the measurement points in field mapping are described in this paper: helical cylindrical line (HCL) method and parallel cylindrical line (PCL) method. According to the condition number, the HCL method is recommended to measure the field components using one probe. As a simple example, we mapped the magnetic fields in a MRI main magnet system. Comparing the results in the different methods, it is feasible and convenient to apply the condition number to reduce the error in the field mapping calculation. Finally, some guidelines were presented for the magnetic field mapping in the center volume of the air-core solenoid.

  • In this work, small-size, high-performance simple solenoid-type RF chip inductors utilizing an Al2O3 core material were investigated. Copper (Cu) wire with $40\mum$ diameter was used as the coils and the size of the chip inductor fabricated in this work was $2.1mm\times1.5mm\times1.0mm$. The external current source was applied after bonding Cu coil leads to gold pads electro-plated on each end of backsides of a core material. High frequency characteristics of the inductance (L), quality factor (Q), and impedance (Z) of developed inductors were measured using an RF Impedance/Material Analyzer (HP4291B with HP16193A test fixture). This HP4291B was also used to obtain the equivalent circuit and its circuit parameters of the chip inductors. This HP4291B was also used to obtain the equivalent circuit and its circuit parameters of the chip inductors. The developed inductors have the self-resonant frequency (SRF) of 1.1 to 3.1 GHz and exhibit L of 22 to 150 nH. The L of the inductors decreases with increasing the SRF. The Z of the inductors has the maximum value at the SRF and the inductors have the quality factor of 70 to 97 in the frequency range of 500 MHz to 1.5 GHz.

  • In this study, the electromagnetic characteristics of a flat-type two-dimensional proportional solenoid were analyzed by the magnetic reluctance method. The equivalent magnetic circuit equation for the solenoid was derived by modeling the reluctance of air gaps and magnetic structural components such as pole core, armature and yoke. It was solved iteratively because of the nonlinear magnetization properties of the iron parts. The solutions showed good agreement with experimental data. Based on the equivalent magnetic circuit equation, the influence of design parameters on the force-to-armature displacement curves was mathematically derived and experimentally verified. In this way, dominant design parameters could be analytically determined.

  • In general, a DC solenoid valve is evaluated by the performances such as the attraction force at maximum and minimum strokes, temperature rising, power consumption and time of action. The importance of each performance may be different according to the specific application purpose. When the temperature rising and power consumption are fixed, however, the performance of DC solenoid valve is usually evaluated by the attraction force at maximum and minimum strokes and time of action. In this paper, the shape of the pole face of plunger and core is optimized to increase the attraction force at maximum stroke, and thereby to minimize the time of action. For the shape optimization, (1+1) evolution strategy is incorporated with the response surface method(RSM) and finite element method(FEM).

  • It is becoming more significant to develop a rotary VCM type actuator for small form factor ODD, as portables are getting more and more popularized nowadays. In this paper, the procedure of development of the actuator which is applicable to compact flash II card and is fit in the specification of BD 1X is explained. This is based on the rotary VCM type actuator, which is good for reducing thickness. Air core solenoid coil is used in order to do focusing mechanism. And the total weight is reduced by using the structure of steel-aluminium-steel triple layer, so, the stiffness is still adequate. Additionally, the tracking coil is moved next to the actuator, so the total length was reduced, then the actuator become applicable to compact flash II card. The force of Magnetic Circuit is improved by using Magnetic Circuit DOE. And flexible mode frequency improved through the DOE of structure part. Modeling was exactly done in consideration of air core solenoid coil and pivot bearing. It is confirmed that the designed model is satisfied with the specification of BD 1X and is applicable to Compact Flash II card.
