  • It is essential to know the heat transfer characteristics at the absorber plate of Flat-plate solar collector for optimum design. For flat-plate solar collector, it is difficult to experimentally study the effect for the Reynolds number of riser considering low mass flow rate being applied into the collector with one riser tube. So, this study were performed to show the heat transfer characteristics of flat-plate solar collector with single absorber plate and riser for various Reynolds number at riser using commercial code FLUENT 6.0. The base collector size is chosen with $0.4m^2$ as 0.2m by 2m with single riser in this study, Reynolds number at riser is from 200 to 1200 including about 530 at typical flat-plate collector with 10 risers considering the mass flow rate of 0.02kg/s per collector area for the certificate test Through the simulation, the results were presented as the temperature distribution at the absorber plate for various flow rate and solar irradiance conditions, then showed the effective length scale of the absorber plate The real solar irradiation condition is assumed as the constant heat flux condition of $500w/m^2$ considering the annual average solar irradiance in Korea.

  • A solar air heater was designed for supplementary domestic heating. The absorber plate had a series of protruding notches which had triangular openings on the front surface of the absorber plate to direct partial air flow to the rear surface and to enhance the convective heat transfer to the flowing air. The height of the opening as well as the opening configuration was determined by preceding numerical simulations. The experimental model had an absorber plate of 0.78-m width and 1.0-m length which was coated with black paint. The air temperature increased as much as $18^{\circ}C$ for $90-m^3/h$ flow rate when the absorber plate was inclined by $45^{\circ}$ for a clear-day solar irradiation of about $906W/m^2$. The collector efficiency ranged from 69 to 74%. Considering the simplicity of the structure and low manufacturing cost, the solar air heater might have competence as an auxiliary heating device for domestic use. On-site experimental results are presented with discussion for various solar irradiations and air flow conditions.

  • The performances of solar collectors with single and double evacuated tube were experimentally compared. The solar collector with single evacuated tube using surface treatment in this study consists of radiation fin, heat pipe, absorber plate, glass tube, cap and regulating valve, and so on. Surface treatment was conducted for heat pipe and absorber plate with black chrome plating and copper black coating. As the results, the performance of solar collector with single evacuated tube using surface treatment showed good results compared that of double evacuated tube. Absorber plate played a positive role in performance and showed increase of about 28%. Further performance depends on vacuum degree and vacuum degree has to be considered economical efficiency in solar collector.

  • This paper analyzed the characteristics of heat transfer in quadangle duct with absorber plate by solar radiation. Effects o( Reynolds number on increasing temperature at outlet for variation of absorber plate temperature were analyzed by using numerical analysis technique. And also the effects of turbulent intensity of inlet flow on increasing temperature at outlet for various duct height and effects of inlet aspect ratio of quadrangle duct and position of heating surface on the outlet temperature were analysed. As the results, Outlet temperature was greatly influenced in low Reynolds number. And the highest outlet temperature distribution appeared on the inlet aspect ratio 2 because of the buoyancy effect.

  • In this work, we experimentally investigated the solar absorption performance of Cu-based scalable nanostructured surfaces and compared their performance with the conventional TiNOX. We fabricated Cu-based nanostructured surfaces with a controlled chemical oxidation process applicable to a large area or complex geometry. We optimized the process parameters including the chemical compounds, dipping time and process temperature. We conducted both lab-scale and outdoor experiments to characterize the conversion efficiency of each absorber surfaces with single and double glazing setup. Lab-scale experiment was conducted with $50mm{\times}50mm$ absorber sample with 1-sun condition (1kW/m2) using a solar simulator (PEC-L01) with measuring the temperature at the absorber plate, cover glass, air gap and ambient. From the lab-scale experiment, we obtained ${\sim}91^{\circ}C$ and $94^{\circ}C$ for CuO and TiNOX surfaces after 1 hr of solar illumination at single glazing, respectively. To measure the absorber performance at actual operating condition, outdoor experiment was also conducted using $110mm{\times}110mm$ absorber sample. We measured the solar flux with thermopile detector (919P-040-50). From outdoor experiment, we observed ${\sim}123^{\circ}C$ and $131^{\circ}C$ for CuO and TiNOX with 0.6 kW/m2 insolation at double glazing, respectively. We showed that the suggested nanostructured CuO solar absorber has near-equivalent collection efficiency compared with the state-of-the-art TiNOX surfaces even with much simpler manufacturing process that does not require an expensive equipment.

  • In this study, a model of a flat plate solar collector using a heat pipe was manufactured and tested to investigate such operational characteristics of the present system of solar collector as start-up process, temperature distribution on the absorber plate and operation of the heat pipe. Moreover, collector efficiency was measured for 20-30 minutes of operation at various conditions of weather and the result was compared with that tested by Hill et. a. for a flat plate solar collector using direct circulation of coolant. Some results obtained in this study could be summarized as follows. (1) The required time for the initial start-up process was about 5-6 minutes, but the heat pipe began to operate as soon as the absorber plate was exposed to solar radiation. (2) On the absorber plate, the temperature distributions in axial direction maintained nearly constant, while temperature distributions in transversal direction showed smooth decrease with $3-5^{\cird}C$ along with solar radiation. (3) Thermal inertia of the collector system had a favorable effect to damp the turbulent variation of solar radiation. (4) The collector efficiency of the present system showed nearly the same tendency but a decrease of about 10% compared with that using direct circulation of coolant.

  • A solar thermal collector is a solar collector specifically intended to collect heat: that is, to absorb sunlight to provide heat. A flat plate is the most common type of solar thermal collector, and is usually used as a solar hot water panel to generate solar hot water. A flat plate collector consists basically of an insulated metal box with a glass or a plastic cover and a dark-colored copper absorber plate. Solar radiation is absorbed by the copper absorber plate and transferred to water that circulates through the collector in copper tubes. Ultrasonic welding is an industrial technique whereby high-frequency ultrasonic acoustic vibrations are locally applied to work pieces being held together under pressure to create a solid-state weld. In this study, we developed solar collector ultrasonic welding machine with digital controlled power supply and tested various welding conditions such as welding pressure, welding amplitude, welding speed. Welding speed was considered in 2~12m/min. The width of ultrasonic welds was increased with welding amplitude by 2.2~2.5mm. The fracture load of ultrasonic welds showed 20% higher than domestic products.

  • The thermal performance of glass evacuated tube solar collectors are numerically and experimentally investigated. Four different shapes of solar collectors are considered and the performances of these solar collectors are compared. Dealing with a single collector tube, the effects of not only the shapes of the absorber tube but also the incidence angle of solar irradiation (beam radiation) on thermal performance of the collector are studied. However the solar irradiation consists of the beam radiation as well as the diffuse radiation. Also, the interference of solar irradiation and heat transfer interaction between the tubes exist in an actual solar collector. These effects are considered in this study experimentally and numerically the accuracy of the numerical model is verified by the experimental results. The result shows that the thermal performance of the absorber used a plate fin and U-tube is the best.

  • In this paper, effect of air gap thickness between absorber plate and glass cover on top heat loss of a closed loop oscillating heat pipe (CLOHP) solar collector was investigated. The CLOHP, which is made of copper with outer diameter of 3.2mm and inner diameter of 2.0mm, comprises 8 turns with heating, adiabatic and cooling section. The heating section of the heat pipe was attached to absorber plate which heated by solar simulator simulated by halogen lamps. The cooling section of the heat pipe was inserted into collector's cooling section that made of transparent acrylic. Temperatures of absorber plate, glass cover, and ambient air measured by K-type thermocouple and were recorded by MV2000-Yokogawa recorder. Top heat loss coefficients and top heat loss of the collector corresponding to some cases of air gap thickness were determined. The result of experiment shows the optimal air gap thickness for minimum top heat loss of this solar collector.
