  • In this study, basic design data which were required for development of highly efficient ice storage system with low temperature latent heat were experimentally obtained. The ice storage system considered in this study was the one that has been widely used in the developed country and called the ice-on-coil type. Using the system, the ice storage performance for various design parameters which were the flow direction and the inlet temperature of the secondary fluid was tested. In addition, the clockwise variation of the heat transfer characteristics of the PCM in the ice storage tank were investigated. During the melting processes in the ice storage tank with several vertical tubes, decrease of the solid-liquid interface area, which was the heat transfer area, between the floating ice and the water made the decreasing rate of IPF less. Also, the total melting energy for the upward flow of the secondary fluid was higher than that for the downward flow during the melting process, but this trend did not appear if the initial temperature of the PCM was $4^{\circ}C$. The average ice recovery efficiency for the upward flow of the secondary fluid was higher than that for the downward flow.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the thermal performance of a medium-temperature heat pipe against the charge amount of working fluid. The container and the wick of the heat pipe were made of stainless steel and the working fluid was Dowtherm-A for medium-temperature applications around $250^{\circ}C$. The diameter and length of the heat pipe were 25.4 mm and 1 m, respectively. The maximum thermal load was 1 kW and the working fluid charge ratio varied from 372% to 420%. The results showed that the thermal resistance ranged from 0.12 to $250^{\circ}C/W$ and the effective thermal conductance ranged from 7,703 to $8,898 W/m{\cdot}K$. Dry-out occurred for the heat pipe with 372% fill-charge at the heat load of 950 W, while the other heat pipes with higher charge amount did not encounter dry-out up to 1060 W.

  • In this study, the basic data which were required for development of LHSS(latent heat storage system) were experimentally obtained. Experiments were carried out under the following conditions. The initial temperatures of P.C.M. which were used by parameter is $5^{\circ}C,\;9^{\circ}C$ and $14^{\circ}C$. The conditions of working fluid are $-6^{\circ}C,\;-4^{\circ}C$, and $65{\ell}$/min.. The pure water of which the freezing point is $0^{\circ}C$ was filled in the system, and the Ethylene glycol(brine) was circulated through the 10 vertical tubes as a secondary fluid in order to cool the P.C.M. down. The inlet temperature of the secondary fluid and the initial temperature of the water were varied to investigate the effects of the important design parameters. The phenomenons of temperature conversion of P.C.M. were appeared for the conductive heat transfer and free convective heat transfer by buoyancy force in this storage unit system. In order to find the effective water circulation path, we obtained P.CM. temperature distributions of 5 parts in the storage tank during freezing process.

  • The thermal and mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced cement-based composite for solar thermal energy storage were investigated in this paper. The effect of the addition of different cement-based materials to Ordinary Portland cement on the thermal and mechanical characteristics of fiber-reinforced composite was investigated. Experiments were performed to measure mechanical properties including compressive strength before and after thermal cycling and split tensile strength, and to measure thermal properties including thermal conductivity and specific heat. Test results showed that the residual compressive strength of mixtures with OPC and slag was greatest among cement-based composite. Thermal conductivity of mixtures including graphite was greater than that of any other mixtures, indicating favor of graphite for improving thermal transfer in terms of charging and discharging in thermal energy storage system. The addition of CSA or zirconium increased specific heat of fiber-reinforced cement-based composite. Test results of this study could be actually used for the design of thermal energy storage system in concentrating solar power plants.

  • As an alternative of well-mixed storage tank with lower coil only, we have proposed a tank with lower and upper coils and verified a superior thermal stratification in a tank, which results in increased collector efficiency and solar fraction. But the phenomenon of temperature reversal was often experimentally observed in the tank, so a revised control was successfully applied which is to heat only lower coil using three way valve if temperature reversal occurs and to operate the collector with low flow rate when the condition of solar radiation is not good. In the present study, using TRNSYS we compared the existing lower heating and the proposed lower and upper heating with a control preventing temperature reversal. The results showed that the proposed method has an increase of collector efficiency by 5.1% and solar fraction by 3.2%.

  • Sodium pyrophosphate that melting point is $79-80^{\circ}C$ have been Studied on heat storage and heat discharge. In heat storage process, sodium pyrophosphate was kept up initial temperature $50^{\circ}C,\;60^{\circ}C,\;70^{\circ}C$ which melt by heated water at temperature $85^{\circ}C,\;90^{\circ}C,\;95^{\circ}C$. In heat discharge process, initial temperature of sodium pyrophosphate was maintained at temperature $85^{\circ}C,\;90^{\circ}C,\;95^{\circ}C$ which varied cooling temperature $50^{\circ}C,\;60^{\circ}C,\;70^{\circ}C$. The experiment has been reached conclusions as follows. 1) Heat transfer properties of phase change material is controlled by conduction during heating and cooling process. 2) The temperature increased rapidly at initial stage and transient region increase slowly because of characteristic of latent heat. 3) The lower cooling water temperature is the less the time that get to thermal equivalent state take during discharge process. 4) The higher cooling water temperature is the less temperature difference between top and bottom in P.C.M during discharge process.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the operating performances of the evaporation desalination system with solar energy. This system was designed to use evacuated solar collector as the heat source, supplying the required heat energy and photovoltaic power as the electric source, supplying required power to pumps in the desalination system. The 5kW photovoltaic power generation system to make the electricity, the single-stage fresh water generator with plate heat exchanger, and remote control and monitoring system. Solar desalination system was designed and installed in Jeju-island, Korea in 2006, after about 4 years of operation, usability and stability of solar desalination system was guaranteed. The system comprises of the desalination unit which was designed to have daily fresh water capacity of $2m^3$, a $120m^2$ evacuated tubular solar collector to supply the heat, a $6m^3$ heat storage tank, and a 5.2kW photovoltaic power generation to supply the electricity to hydraulic pumps for the heat medium fluids. On a clear day, average daily solar irradiance in Jeju-island was measured to be $500W/m^2$ and the daily fresh water yield showed to be more than 500 liters under this condition. After around three years of a long term operation of the system from January 2007 to August 2009, average daily freshwater yield was analyzed to be around $330{\ell}$. The relationship equation between solar irradiance and freshwater yield was found to be y=1.1806x - 107.89.

  • This study presents experimental and numerical results of the temperature characteristics, the heat transfer phenomema, and the heat storage quantity during the heat storage process with sodium phyrophosphate decahydrate($Na_4P_2O_7{\cdot}10H_2O$)-Phase Change Material(PCM) in a latent heat storage tank(cubic type). It was proved that heat transfer by conduction was dominant because PCM($Na_4P_2O_7{\cdot}10H_2O$) during heating processes was gel phase, not liquid phase The gap ratio(rate of air content) of PCM became smaller, the thermal capacity of PCM became larger, therefore the temperature distribution of PCM slowly increased than that of large gap ratio. There was maximum 15% difference between measured temperatures and calculated temperatures.

  • This study deals with the collection of solar energy and its storage in evacuated tubular collector systems for different types of header design, flow passage and heat transfer devices. In order to elicit the most efficient combination of header design, flow passage, heat transfer hardware and operating conditions, a series of tests were done for the four different types of solar collectors utilizing vacuum tubes. The systems studied here either has the evacuated collector tubes with a metal cap on one end or the all-glass evacuated solar collector tubes These evacuated tubular collectors are known to be more efficient than the flat-plate ones in both direct and diffuse solar radiation. Test results show that the system comprised of the all-glass evacuated tubes with U-shaped copper pipes inside outperforms the other configurations. Especially, a rolled copper sheet tightly placed along the inner surface of each inner tube enhances heat transfer between the heated collector surface and the water contained in the U-shaped copper pipe.
