  • Thin crystalline silicon (C-Si) solar cell is expected to be a low price energy source by decreasing the consumption of Si. However, thin c-Si solar cell entails the bowing and crack issues in high temperature manufacturing process. Thus, the conventional tabbing process, based on high temperature soldering (> $250^{\circ}C$), has difficulties for applying to thin c-Si solar cell modules. In this paper, a conductive paste (CP) based interconnection process has been proposed to fabricate thin c-Si solar cell modules with high production yield, instead of existing soldering materials. To optimize the process condition for CP based interconnection, we compared the performance and stability of modules fabricated under various lamination temperature (120, 150, and $175^{\circ}C$). The power from CP based module is similar to that with conventional tabbing process, as modules are fabricated. However, the output of CP based module laminated at $120^{\circ}C$ decreases significantly (14.1% for Damp heat and 6.1% for thermal cycle) in harsh condition, while the output drops only in 3% in the samples process at $150^{\circ}C$, $175^{\circ}C$. The peel test indicates that the unstable performance of sample laminated at $120^{\circ}C$ is attributed to weak adhesion strength (1.7 N) between cell and ribbon compared to other cases (2.7 N). As a result, optimized lamination temperature for CP based module process is $150^{\circ}C$, considering stability and energy consumption during the fabrication.

  • We compare the relation among the annual distribution of sunspots: coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and geomagnetic storms and North-South asymmetry during solar cycle 23. For this purpose, we calculate correlation coefficients between (i) annual distribution and N-S asymmetry of CMEs - sunspots (ii) distribution of CMEs - occurrence number of geomagnetic storms (iii) distribution of sunspots - occurrence number of geomagnetic storms. We find that (i) the annual distribution of total CMEs has good correlation with distribution of annual average of sunspots but poor correlation with N-S asymmetry of sunspots, N-S asymmetry of CMEs has good correlation with N-S asymmetry of sunspots: (ii) total and N-S asymmetry of CMEs have poor correlation with occurrence number of geomagnetic storms, it's, however, well correlated with the classified groups of CMEs (Ap, Dst and an indices vs. fast CMEs($\upsilon$ > $1000kms^{-1}$), Dst index vs. Halo CMEs), and (iii) sunspot numbers and area are correlated with occurrence number of geomagnetic storms. We conclude that annual distribution of CMEs and sunspots have well correlated with geomagnetic storms, N-S asymmetry of CMEs and sunspots have poor correlated with the geomagnetic storms.

  • The system design of the Organic Rankine Cycle(ORC) is greatly influenced by the thermal properties such as the temperature or the thermal capacity of heat source. Typically waste heat, solar energy, geothermal energy, and so on are used as the heat source for the ORC. However, thermal energy supplying from these kinds of heat sources cannot be provided constantly. Hence, an experimental study was conducted to utilize fluctuating thermal energy efficiently. For this experiment, an impulse turbine and supersonic nozzles were applied and the supersonic nozzle was used to increase the velocity at the nozzle exit. In addition, these nozzles were used to adjust the mass flowrate depending on the amount of the supplied thermal energy. The experiment was conducted with maximum three nozzles due to the capacity of thermal energy. The experimented results were compared with the predicted results. The experiment showed that the useful output power could be producted from low-grade thermal energy as well as fluctuating thermal energy.

  • The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) has been used to convert thermal energy to mechanical energy or electricity. The available thermal energy could be waste heat, solar energy, geothermal energy, and so on. However, these kinds of thermal energies cannot be provided continuously. Hence, the ORC can be operated at the off-design point. In this case, the performance of the ORC could be worse because the components of the ORC system designed based on a design point can be mismatched with the output power obtained at the off-design point. In order to improve the performance at the off-design point, a few components were replaced including generator, bearing, load bank, shaft, pump and so on. Experiments were performed on the same facility without including other losses in the experiment. The experimental results were compared with the results obtained with the previous model, and they showed that the system efficiency of the ORC was greatly affected by the losses occurred on the components.

  • Current feed-in tariffs(FIT) of Electricity generating from new and renewable energy sources are reappraised with the corrected formula of levelized generation cost(LGC) of utility power. The LGC of new and renewable electricity should be formulated in explicitly reflecting the capital cost and corporate tax during the economic life cycle based on its realistic application data. An applicable term of the FITs should, especially, be equal to the economic life cycle. The revised FITs issued in 2006 were, however, derived from the incorrect formula described in the study of KERI(Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute), and consequently misestimated. The reappraisal values for FIT of new and renewable electricity were shown and interpreted in this paper. An FIT of PV more than 30 kW, for example, should be 972.86 won/kWh instead of current 677.38 won/kWh increasing 43.6%. An upward revision of other FITs for new and renewable electricities should also be required in the range of 8.6% to 47.3%.

  • The conventional energy-production system by burning fossil fuels releases many pollutants and carbon dioxide($CO_2$) to the environment. Therefore, many countries pay attention to new and renewable energy and invest in the development of these new technologies for the future energy security. One of the most promising of these technologies is a photovoltaic system. In this study, Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) is carried out to analyse the environmental issues(e.g. global warming, abiotic resource depletion) of CdTe photovoltaic system. The spatial and temporal scope of this study was set in Korea during 2004~2005. We assumed that CdTe photovoltaic system was installed in Mokpo where the amount of solar irradiation was higher than other places in Korea. Based on the present data and some assumptions, greenhouse gas emission was 39.2g $CO_2$-eq./kWh. Therefore the electricity produced by CdTe photovoltaic system is more environmentally friendly than the conventional power generation system.

  • This article reviews absorption cooling R&D in Europe from the viewpoint of fundamentals, cycle development and applications. The review contains information on R&D, predominantly of public projects in the field of sorption cooling. We report on research which is performed in Europe with some stress on Germany. There is progress in fundamentals, thermodynamic cycle design, and also applications. In the fundamentals part the discussion about thermodynamics, working pairs, and heat and mass transfer is reflected. Today's discussion on thermodynamic cycles is not very strong. Main focus is on special solid sorption cycles, compressionsorption hybrids, and open cycles, In the applications part the chilling business is the main issue. Some interest is given to the improvement of efficiency on and the adaptation to low temperature waste heat use, but the stress is on the use of solar energy as heat source. The area of heat pumping for heating purposes is less prominent but not at all negligible. Finally, industrial heat pumping involves the reverse cycle (heat transformer, heat pump type Ⅱ) also, but there is no significant activity.

  • In response to the growing interest in supercritical carbon dioxide ($S-CO_2$) power cycle technology because of its potential enhancement in compactness and efficiency, the $S-CO_2$ cycles have been studied intensively in the fields of nuclear power, concentrated solar power (CSP), and fossil fuel power generation. Despite this interest, there are relatively few studies on waste heat recovery applications. In this study, the $S-CO_2$ cycle that has a split flow with preheating was modeled and simulated. The variation in the power was investigated with respect to the changes in the value of a design parameter. Under the simulation conditions considered in this study, it was confirmed that the design parameter has an optimal value that can maximize the power in the $S-CO_2$ power cycle that has a split flow with preheating.

  • Since some decades ago, there has been a concern for resource depletion and environmental pollution associated with building properties. In addressing such impact of the built environment, there is a recognition of the existence of alternative building materials, fuels for energy supply as well as technologies for waste handling and disposal. Nevertheless, for long time, the choice between such alternatives was dictated by factors such as differences in prices and aesthetic values. A new important dimension in discriminating between different options is the environmental dimension. This aspect is important since buildings are one of the spatially big new additions to the natural environment that consume a lot of materials and energy during their long lifetime. Thus, with the environmental dimension kept in mind, a existing cost estimation needs to be changed. A new cost assessment method, Life Cycle Cost, should calculate overall costs with dimensional factors: investment and utility costs as well as maintenance costs over the lifetime of the building. Aiming to give an overview of the present status of Building Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) tools as a basis for further research and development including economic performance, this paper describes and compares 3 different tools for Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) and economic analysis of the green buildings. This paper compared these approaches based on various aspects. These include economic analysis method, evaluation duration, data of results(index). Use of the comparison analysis is to produce a better picture and indicate profits and shortcomings for the tools as a group; thus providing important direction improvement of LCA tool as well as further research and development of this group of tools.

  • In this study, the variation of characteristics of P-25 photocatalyst with calcination temperature(Pure: non-thermally treated, 450, 650, $850^{\circ}C$) was studied. The photocatalysts were used as working materials for dye-sensitized solar cells: DSSCs) later on and their photovoltaic characterization was carried out. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue using the P-25 photocatalyst with different calcination temperature was almost same expect for $850^{\circ}C$. The solar energy conversion efficiency ($\eta$) of DSSCs prepared by the nanoparticles (photocatalyst) reached 6.9% (for pure), 6.5%(for 450), 5.8%(for 650) and 5.6%(850).
