  • Three organic sensitizers, JK-128, JK-129, and JK-130 containing quinoline unit are designed and synthesized. Under standard global AM 1.5 solar condition, the JK-130 sensitized solar cell gave a short circuit photocurrent density of 11.52 mA $cm^{-2}$, an open circuit voltage of 0.70 V, and a fill factor of 0.75, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 6.07%. We found that the $\eta$ of JK-130 was higher than those of other two cells due to the higher photocurrent. The higher $J_{sc}$ value is attributed to the broad and intense absorption spectrum of JK-130.

  • A new unsymmetrical zinc phthalocyanine has been designed and synthesized based on the 'push-pull' and extended ${\pi}$-conjugation concept for the dye-sensitized solar cells. Three tert-butoxy groups, which act as electron releasing ('push'), enhance the solubility of phthalocyanine in common organic solvents and reduce the aggregation. Hydroxy substituted 9,10-anthraquinones act as electron acceptors ('pull') for the study of photoinduced electron transfer processes as well as grafting onto nanocrystalline $TiO_2$. The new unsymmetrical zinc phthalocyanine was fully characterized by FTIR, UV-vis, $^1H$ NMR, cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The new sensitizer was tested in dye-sensitized solar cells, and gave a better performance.

  • Thin film solar cells with chalcopyrite $CuInSe_2/Cu(In,Ga)Se_2$ absorber materials, commonly known as "CIS/CIGS solar cells" have recently attracted significant research interest as a potential alternative energy-harvesting system for the next generation. Among the different deposition techniques available for the CIGS absorber layer, electrodeposition is an effective and low cost alternative to vacuum based deposition methods. This article reviews progress in the area of CIGS solar cells with an emphasis on electrodeposited absorber layer. Existing challenges in fabrication of stoichiometric absorber layer are highlighted.

  • Intensity modulated photovoltage spectroscopy (IMVS) analysis of organic solar cells (OSCs) with a bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) film composed of P3HT and $PC_{61}BM$ was performed. The dynamic response of charge recombination by the post-annealing approach in $P3HT/PC_{61}BM$ BHJ solar cells characterized by IMVS demonstrated that post-annealing reduced the recombination of electron carriers in the device. The recombination times of $P3HT/PC_{61}BM$ BHJ solar cells post-annealed at room temperature, 80, 120, and $140^{\circ}C$ were 0.009, 0.020, 0.024, and 0.030 ms, respectively, at a short-circuit current of 0.18 mA. The results indicated that the IMVS analysis can be effectively used as powerful.

  • Six metal-free organic dyes having thiophene (1), benzene-thiophene (2), thiophene-benzene (3), thiophene-pyridine (4), thiophene-thiophene (5), and pyridine (6) linkers between 9,9-dimethylfluorenyl terminal group and $\alpha$-cyanoacrylic acid anchor were synthesized. Among them, organic dye 5 showed the longest ${\lambda}_{max}$ value (424 nm) in UV-Vis absorption spectrum, better incident monochromatic photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE), highest short circuit photocurrent density ($J_{SC},\;9.33\;mA^2/cm^2$), and highest overall conversion efficiency ($\eta$, 3.91%).

  • N-doped anatase $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were prepared by the sol-gel process followed by a hydrothermal treatment and successfully used as the photoanodes in organic dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). As expected, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.44% was obtained for the NKX2677/HC-A-sensitized DSSC based on the 30 mol% N-doped $TiO_2$ photoanode, which was an improvement of 23% relative to that of the DSSC based on the NKX2677/DCA.
