  • The purpose of this study was to search for an appropriate method of coating $TiO_2$ on orthodontic appliances. $TiO_2$ thin films were deposited on orthodontic wires and brackets using sol-gel, CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) and PE-CVD (Plasma Enhanced-CVD) methods. The roughness of $TiO_2$-coated surfaces was investigated via scanning electron microscope (SEM) and adhesive strength of $TiO_2$ thin films was measured by adhesive tape pull test. Methylene blue degradation test was carried out to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ and the corrosion resistance of $TiO_2$ thin films against fluoride solution was also analyzed by observing the surfaces of $TiO_2$-coated wires and brackets via SEM after immersion in sodium fluoride solution. Through the comparison of properties and photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ thin films according to the coating methods, the following results were obtained. Smoother surfaces of $TiO_2$ thin films were generated by CVD or PE-CVD methods than through the sol-gel method or the control. Adhesive strength of the $TiO_2$ thin films was highest in PE-CVD and gradually became lower in the order of CVD, then the sol-gel method. Photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ thin films on methylene blue was the highest in PE-CVD and gradually became lower in the order of CVD, then the sol-gel method. Corrosion resistance of $TiO_2$ thin films against fluoride solution was stronger in CVD and PE-CVD methods than in the sol-gel method. The results of this study suggest that the CVD or PE-CVD methods is more appropriate than the sol-gel method for $TiO_2$ coating on orthodontic wires and brackets.

  • Transparent conductive indium zinc oxide thin films were prepared by spin-coating a sol-gel solution. Zinc acetate dihydrate [$Zn(CH_3COO)_2{\cdot}2H_2O$] and indium acetate [In$(CH_3COO)_3$] were used as starting precursors, and 2-methoxyethanol with 1-propanol as solvents. Upon annealing in a temperature range from 500 to $1000^{\circ}C$, the thin film crystallizes into polycrystalline $In_2O_3$(ZnO). The lowest electrical resistivity was obtained at an annealing temperature of $700^{\circ}C$ as $2{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$. Average optical transmittances were higher than 80% at all annealing temperatures. These experimental results confirm that the sol-gel spin-coating can be a good simplified practical method for forming transparent electrodes.

  • The oxygen barrier films were formed on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) substrate by a sol-gel process using aminoalkoxysilanes. The coating layers were characterized by FT-IR and SEM. The oxygen permeability coefficients of coating films were measured by variable volume method, and then the influences of solvent ratio in sol and film drying temperature on the oxygen barrier properties were investigated. The aminoalkoxysilane coating films exhibited much higher oxygen barrier properties than PET film. The oxygen permeability coefficient of the film coated with each of APTEOS and APTMOS was measured to be $2.96{\times}10^{-6}$ and $3.05{\times}10^{-5}\;GPU$, respectively, while that of PET film was $1.16{\times}10^{-4}\;GPU$.

  • Indium tin oxide (ITO) coatings were made using an ITO slurry and an ITO sol. This was achieved by dispersing nanosized ITO powder in a mixed solvent without any dispersant and developing an adhesive ITO sol from indium acetate and tin tetrachloride in a mixture of DMF and n-butanol. Coating was carried out in one step by spin coating an ITO slurry, which was then followed by an ITO sol over it. Here, the sol penetrates into the nano ITO particle layers to make them adhere to each other as well as to a glass substrate. This is then followed by sintering at 500$^{\circ}C$ for 1 h to produce a uniform film consisting of ITO particles of about 50 nm and 10 nm. ITO films were obtained with sheet resistances from 450 to 1500 ohm/${\Box}$ by varying spin speed and concentration. Transmittance is higher than 90% at 550 nm.

  • Stable zirconia sol was prepared from zirconium butoxide Zr(OC4O9)4 as a precursor and ethylacetoacetate(EAcAc) or diethylene glycol(DEG) as a chelating agent under ambient agent under ambient atmosphere by Sol-Gel process. The sythesized sol was coated on 304 stainless steel substrate by dip coating, thereafter zirconia film could be obtained by heat-treatment at $600^{\circ}C$. The characteristics of coating film were determined by FT-IR, XRD, and ellipsometion peak represented Zr-O-Zr bonding of tetragonal phase was shown at 470cm-1. Crystallization of zirconia gel and film from amorphous state to tetragonal phase started at 40$0^{\circ}C$, and then transformed into monoclinic phase around $700^{\circ}C$. Zirconia film coated on 304 stainless steel substrate showed relatively low porosity of 16% when it was coated with 0.4M zirconia sol and thereafter heat-treated at 80$0^{\circ}C$ and the film was densified continuously up to 90$0^{\circ}C$. The zirconia film of 10 nm thick acted as a protective layer against oxidation up to $700^{\circ}C$.

  • [ $Y_{2}O_{2}S:Eu$ ], a red phosphor, coated with silica nanoparticles or nanocomposites composed of silica nanoparticles and polymeric materials such as PMMA and PVP was prepared via sol-gel process. Samples were prepared from four different methods coded P1, P2, P3, and P4. P1 includes a conventional sol-gel process and a dip-coating method while P2 has the same procedure with P1 except that nanocomposites containing both silica nanoparticles and polymer prepared by sol-gel process were used as coating materials. In P3 method, phosphors were dispersed in a solution containing silica precursor, i.e., TEOS and then polymerization was performed to coat onto the phosphors surface while P4 followed the same procedure with P3 except that a solution containing both TEOS and organic monomer were used in preparing coating materials. Among various coating methods examined in this study, uniform coating of phosphor could be achieved by using method P4, i.e., phosphor surface coating in a solution containing hydrophobic monomer and TEOS. Furthermore, $Y_{2}O_{2}S:Eu$ red phosphor coated with nanocomposite composed of PMMA matrix and silica nanoparticles exhibited enhanced PL intensity and long-term stability.

  • Two kinds of colloidal silica(CS)/silane sol solutions were prepared in variation with synthesizing parameters such as kinds of CS, ratio of CS to silane and reaction time. Such sol solutions were obtained from 1034A Cs/methyl-trimethoxysilane(MTMS) and HSA CS/MTMS solutions. In the case of 1034A CS/MTMS CS/silane sol, coating film had high contact angle and more enhanced flat surface than those in the case of HSA CS/MTMS sol. In the case of thermal stability, thermal dissociation of 1034A CS/MTMS sol did not occur up to $550^{circ}$. The thickness of coating film obtained from 1034A CS/MTMS sol increased with increasing the amount of MTMS. The hardness of coating films obtained from 1034A CS/MTMS sol decreased with increasing the amount of MTMS. Surface free energy of CS/silane sol-gel coating film decreased with increasing amount of MTMS.

  • Coating are needed on ophthalmic lenses to enhance both the mechanical durability of the relatively soft plastic surface and the optical performance of lenses. Organic-inorganic hybrid materials as molar ratio of 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane(GPTS), methyltrimethoxysilane(MTMS) and tetraethyl orthosilicate(TEOS) were used to improve the surface characteristics and the optical properties on allyl diglycol carbonate lenses. Coating for these plastics were at $140^{\circ}C$ for 4hrs, applied using the sol-grl process flow-coating technique. The coated lens properties of transmittance, adhesion, pencil hardness, abrasion resistance, hot water resistance and chemical resistance were investigated. The optimum properties was obtained when the ratio of GPTS : MTMS : TEOS was 1:1:2, respectively.

  • Organic-inorganic hybrid coating solutions were prepared by using a sol-gel method for transparent film. In this study, colloidal silica (CS) and alkoxy silane such as vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS), and [3-(methacryloyloxy)]propyltri methoxy silane (MAPTMS) were used in various conditions such as types of organic silane, weight ratios of CS to silane and reaction times. Coating solutions which were bar coated on the PET (polyethyleneterephthalate) film and cured were investigated on the chemical and physical properties. The pencil hardness and adhesion of coating films were increased with increasing the organic silane content in the coating solution compared to that of PMMA (polymethamethylcrylate) coating solution.
