In order to establish the application method of slurry composting & biofilteration liquid fertilizer (SCB LF) in rice cultivation, experiments were studied on split application method of it and effects of it on soil chemical properties and rice yields. Land leveling by rotary tillage within 2 days after application of SCB LF, $NH_4$-N concentration in soil was maintained uniformly in all paddy field. Initial concentrations of $NH_4$-N and $NO_3$-N in soil were high at standard fertilization and 100% application of SCB LF as basal fertilization, however, after tillering stage they maintained similar concentrations in all experimental plots. $NO_3$-N content in infiltration water was slightly lower at 70% application of SCB LF as basal fertilization and 30% application of SCB LF as fertilization at panicle initiation stage than at standard fertilization. Yields of rice by split application of SCB LF were lower at 100% application of SCB LF as basal fertilization, however, those of the other application of SCB LF were similar with that of standard fertilization. In case of rice quality, perfect kernel rates were high and protein contents were lower at non-application and 100% application of SCB LF. Rice quality of 70% application of SCB LF as basal fertilization and 30% application of SCB LF as fertilization at panicle initiation stage were similar with that of standard fertilization.
The southwestern part of Korean Peninsula, which length is about 13,000 km, is largely formed with soft cohesive soil ground and when it is developed, the low bearing capacity and excessive settlement of soft ground give many problems. In particular, a lot of clayey soil is deserted due to high moisture content and weakness, and areas formed with soft ground. In this study it was performed unconfined compression test, CBR tests, laboratory frost heaving test, and wheel tracking test in order to determine the optimum mixture ratio of paper sludge ash added chemical stabilizer with soft soil for consideration of its frost heaving and strength characteristics. As a results of the above experiments, when the soft soil is mixed with 6% of chemical stabilizer to improve the soft soil for utilizing as a subgrade soil material. It is satisfied the quality standard of fill materials, and the results of this research are expected to be used as an appropriate usage standard for utilization of on-site soil generated.
The region of Kochang(Chollabuk-Do) located in the west-southern area of the Korea and passed by the West Coast Expressway has the yellow collar soil(Hwang-To) primarily containing clay. Hwang-To serves as a soil appropriate for growing the watermelon and yam, but as a subgrade material not strong for constructing the roads. Particularly, the subgrade material of this study site was not qualified for the standard of the subgrade material quality. The properties of the subgrade layer showed that the strength of the subgrade material was not strong enough to sustain the subgrade strength in constructing the roads since the passing ratio of the No. 200 sieve was about 25% to 82% and the ground water level was early equal to subgrade one. Thus, the objective of this study was to present the methods obtaining the proper subgrade strength of cutting area to construct the secure and solid expressways in the fragile area.

Silage wm(cv, Gwanganok) was cultivated during 1991-1994 on paddy land as a rotational cropping system of rice, to evaluate the effect of cattle manure application on the soil characteristics, yield performance and quality of com plant. The treatments used in this study were non-fertilizer, NPK standard in chemical fertilizer(N:$P_2O_5$ : $K_2O$= 200 : 150 : 150 kg/ha), cattle manure 20.40, 60 and 80 ton/ha Application of cattle manure improved soil pH, organic matter, available phosphate and exchangeable cations in the soils. During the experiment, soil pH was improved from 4.7 in the chemical fertilizer application(control) to 5.4-5.6 in the application of cattle manure, and available $P_2O_5$ wntent was increased from 72.2 ppm(contro1) to 340.2 ppm(cattle manure 80 ton/ha). Application of cattle manure increased plant growth, plant height and stalk diameter, and silage yields. Dry matter yields were produced 15.88 ton(chemical fertilizer), 20.11 ton(cattle manure 40 ton) and 21.22 ton/ha(cattle manure 80 ton/ha). However, no signicant yield differences were observed between cattle manure 40, 60 and 80 tonlha Productions of total digestible nutrients(TDN) and net energy for lactation(NEL) were also increased under cattle manure application. From the abobe results, the proper application amount of cattle manure was 40 tonha in this experiment.

A new treatment system for animal waste water has been developed as an alternative to the activated sludge process. It consists of two treatments; one is operated with 7 tanks, and the other is soil and plant cultivation bed. Aerobic microorganisms are added to the influent water in the tanks where the water is aerated so that the microbes utilize the pollutants, while sedimentation removes the indigestible solids. In the secondary treatment the water, which has already received a primary treatment, is filtered through soil where it also receives treatment by soil organisms. In addition there is transpiration of water and absorption of minerals by plants. In the primary treatment BOD, SS, coliforms (E. coli), TP and total bacteria were removed 79-99%, but COD and TN were removed only 58% and 36%, respectively. In the secondary treatment removal of nutrients proceeded further, and 93-99% of pollutants were removed. The treated waters met the quality standard of discharge water in Japan except for TN, which was in too great a concentration to meet discharge standards. This problem requires further study.

In typical remediation practices, separate washing systems have to be applied to clean up the soils contaminated with both oil and heavy metals. In this study, we evaluated the efficiency of successive two-stage soil washing in removal of mixed-contaminants from soil matrix. Two-stage soil washing experiments were conducted using different combinations of chemical agent: 1) persulfate oxidation, followed by organic acid washing, and 2) Fenton oxidation, followed by inorganic acid washing. Persulfate oxidation-organic acid washing efficiently removed both organic and inorganic contaminants to meet the regulatory soil quality standard. The average removal rates of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), Cu, Pb, and Zn were 88.9%, 82.2%, 77.5%, and 66.3% respectively, (S/L 1:10, reaction time 1 h, persulfate 0.5 M, persulfate:activator 3:1, citric acid 2 M). Fenton oxidation-inorganic acid washing also gave satisfactory performances to give 89%, 80.9%, 87.1%, and 67.7% removal of TPH, Cu, Pb, and Zn, respectively (S/L 1:10, reaction time 1 hr, hydrogen peroxide 0.3 M, hydrogen peroxide:activator 5:1, inorganic acid 1 M).

Environment-friendly growth enhancers for rice are being promoted to reverse the negative impact of intensive chemical-based and conventional rice farming on yield sustainability and environmental problems. Several rhizosphere microorganisms and pyroligneous acids (PA) had demonstrated beneficial influence on growth, yield and grain quality of rice. Since most of the previous study had evaluated the effect of PGPR and PA on paddy rice singly, the effect of combined application of these on the growth and yield of paddy rice and on some soil chemical properties were determined. A four factorial pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of PGPR, PA in combination with fertilizers and on different soil types. There were 54 treatment combinations including the control with three replications under complete randomized design. Plant growth parameters were evaluated using standard procedures during tillering and heading stages. Rice yield and some soil chemical properties were determined at harvest. Results showed that inoculation of Bacillus licheniformis and Fusarium fujikuroi enhanced plant growth by increasing the plant height which could be ascribe to its ability to promote IAA and GA production in plants. Inoculation of Rhizobium phaseoli enhanced chlorophyll content indicative to its ability to improve the N nutrition. However, these plant growth benefits during the vegetative stage were override by the fertilizer application effect especially during the maturity stage and grain yield. High fertilization rates on coarse-textured soil without nutrient loss resulted to high available nutrients and consequently high yield. Wood vinegar application however improved nutrient availability in soil which could be beneficial for improving soil quality. Further evaluation is necessary to fully assess the potential benefits that could be derived from inoculation of these organisms and wood vinegar application in different soil environment especially under different field conditions.

There is a need to establish systematic procedure of groundwater quality standards, however, there were no specified basis for establishing substances and values in Korean groundwater quality standards for non-drinking water. In this study, we reviewed basis for deriving groundwater quality standard in the developed countries, considering carcinogenic and non-carciongenic risk via inhalation and dermal contact exposure pathways. Also, we reviewed the prior systematic procedure of standards related to water quality (e.g. drinking water, surface water, and wastewater). USEPA RAGS, ASTM RBCA, and Massachusettes presented the formulas for deriving groundwater concentrations of chemicals and there were similarity and differences. We suggests systematic procedure of groundwater quality standards, as follows. (1) Selection of groundwater pollutants population, (2) Possibility of risk assessment, (3) Selection of monitoring priority substances, (4) Monitoring, (5) Risk assessment, (6) Selection of groundwater quality standard candidates, (7) Selection of new substances and values for groundwater quality standards. Especially, groundwater concentration of hazardous material were presented according to revised risk formulas via inhalation and dermal contact.
Pile foundations of existing bridges lie in soil and water environment for long term and endure relatively heavy vertical loads, thus prone to damages, especially after stricken by external forces, such as earthquake, collision, soil heap load and etc., and the piles may be injured to certain degrees as well. There is a relatively complete technical system for quality inspection of new bridge pile foundations without structures on the top. However, there is no mature technical standard in the engineering community for the non-destructive testing technology specific to the existing bridge pile foundations. The quality of bridge pile foundations has always been a major problem that plagues bridge maintenance. On the basis of many years' experiences in test engineering and theoretical studies, this study developed a new type of detection technology and equipment for the existing bridge piles.

The difficulties, challenges and limitations faced in standard pressuremeter testing in the measurement of low soil deformations led a number of researchers to think about the possible modification of the equipment, and especially the replacement of the volumeter by a Hall Effect sensor. This article is a major contribution in this direction. It makes an attempt to detail the design, manufacture and operation of the new equipment. The calibration of the various components was carried out according to the rules presently in force. This proposal was applied, on an exploratory basis, to the data of a real site located in France. The authors present the preliminary results of some cyclic pressuremeter tests, previously carried out in the laboratory, on a sandy material, and they then provide a basic interpretation of these results. The findings indicated that the proposed apparatus is capable of providing high-quality information about constraints and deformations. Although these tests were performed within the laboratory, it was possible to analyze the power, quality, performance and insufficiencies of the proposed equipment.
