Root-rot disease is a serious problem in ginger cultivation fields and it reduces the quality and productivity of ginger. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different soil physical and chemical properties on the changes of ginger growth. As comparing the selected soil chemical properties after harvesting the ginger plants with those before planting them, the contents of total nitrogen and exchangeable $Mg^{2+}$ increased, whereas electrical conductivity (EC) and exchangeable $K^+$ content decreased. Potassium (K) concentrations in ginger plant were markedly higher in both its shoot and root parts ranging from 63.9 to $72.3g\;kg^{-1}$ and from 27.6 to $37.3g\;kg^{-1}$, respectively, which might be related to the decrease of exchangeable $K^+$ content in soils. Incidence rate of ginger root-rot disease in the plots ranges between 26.7% and 88.1%. It was higher in low elevation plots with clay loam soils than in high elevation plots. In addition, the incidence of the disease increased as affected by high temperature and humid condition during the growth and maturity stages of ginger. Therefore, soil texture, field slop, and drainage system as well as chemical properties should be considered to cultivate ginger plant.
This study was aimed to determine effects of soil organic amendment as plant growing media component on restoration of planting ground. The changes of soil physical and chemical properties and germination and growth of kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) were investigated. For treatments, soil was excavated at depth of 0-50 cm (referred as $S_1$) and at depth of 50-100 cm (referred as $S_2$). Then the half amount of $S_1$ soil was mixed with the soil organic amendment (coir dust 40% (v/v), bottom ash 25%, leaf mold 25%, vermiculite 5%, carbonized rice hull 5%) at a rate of 6% (v/v) (referred as $S_1CC$) and also the half amount of $S_2$ soil was mixed with the soil organic amendment at a rate of 6% (v/v) (referred as $S_2CC$) on pot in a 16 cm diameter and 14 cm height. The experiment was replicated 3 times with 3 pots per replication in randomized block design, and 100 seeds were planted per pot. In results, there was no significant difference in soil pH among the treatments with a slight decrease in soil hydraulic conductivity. However, in the $S_1CC$ treatment, positive increases in soil chemical properties, including electrical conductivity, organic matter, phosphoric acid, total nitrogen, exchangeable cation, and cation exchange capacity. Also, the germination rate, plant height, and number of leaves were higher in the $S_1CC$ treatment than those in other treatments. These results suggest that the addition of organic amendment to the soil at depth of 0-50 cm might be proper for restoring planting ground.
The east coast of the Korean Peninsula is susceptible to fires because of the low rainfall in winter and spring, and large forest fires have occurred in this area. Lack of fresh water to combat fires has hampered efforts to prevent widespread forest fires in this region. Seawater has not been used as a suppressant because of possible detrimental effects of salt. We investigated the mobility of saline water in the forest soil and their effect on the microbial activity. Using a fire-fighting helicopter, seawater was sprayed over three plots (50 × 100 m) located on the eastern slope of the Baekdu mountain range in South Korea in April, 2011. We sampled the soil in April 4, May 20, and August 5 to determine the amount of salt that remained in the soil. The electrical conductivity value of the soil decreased to <400 μS/cm over a 1-month period. Approximately, four months after the application of seawater, the electrical conductivity value and Na+ content in all treatment plots did not significantly differ to those of the control plot, and total microbial activity also recovered to that of the control. Our results indicate that the amount of rainfall, soil physical-chemical properties, and topological factors may be a critical factor determining the mobility of saline water in forest soil.
This study was conducted to investigated the effects of rubber chips from used tires on sports turf ground as soil conditioner to improve soil physical properties. The release of heavy metal ions was detected to check the soil contamination by incorporation of recycled rubber chips with topsoil. The effects of the chips were also evaluated as topdressing material to improve surface resilience. The rate of rubber chips showed a positive relationship with soil temperature increasement. Incorporation of rubber chips increased soil temperature on surface at 2.5 cm-depth. The rates of rubber chip showed a negative relationship with ground cover rate of turfgrass in early growth season. However, after 20 weeks, treatment of 10% rubber chips at 2.5 cm-depth showed a prominent cover rate of 70% which was not significantly different with untreated control. Incorporation of rubber chips within topsoil seemed to reduce soil compaction, but the effects was not prominent on physical properties. Rubber chips did not affect chemical properties and heavy metal contamination to soil environment. Rubber chips improved resilience of the compacted ground surface as topdressing material, this effect was prominent when aerification practise was preceded.
To describe the major environmental factors operating in coastal wetland and to characterize the distribution of the plant species over the wetland in relation to the major environmental gradients, 12 soil physical and chemical properties were determined. The gradient of water and osmotic potential of soil, electrical conductivity, sodium and chloride content and soil texture alsong the three habitat types of salt marshes, salt swamp and sand dune were occurred. The 24 coastal plant communities from principal component analysis (PCA) on the 12 variables were at designated as a gradient for soil texture and water potential related with salinity by Axis I and as a gradient for soil moisture and total nitrogen gradient by Axis II On Axis I were divided into 3 groups (1) 9 salt marsh communities including Salicornia herbacea communities (2) 5 salt swamp communities including Scirpus fluviatilis communities and (3) 10 sand dune communities including Jmperata cylindrica communities on Axis II were divided into 2 groups (1) salt marsh and sand dune communities, and (2) 3 salt swamp communities. The results could account for the zonation of plant communities on coastal wetland observed alsong envionmental gradients.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of swine liquid manure(SLM) and phosphorus fertilizer from September, 1998 to July, 1999 on the soil fertility on Italian ryegrass field, Cheju volcanic ash soil. pH(lst investigated), Mg (2nd investigated) and Cu content (2nd investigated) on soil grown by Italian ryegrass were significantly increased by an increase of fertilizer P(P
The river-bed sediments from the major river basins were analysed for the chemical and physical properties to evaluate environmental safety for the agricultural uses. The samples were taken from 16 sites of Han river, 36 of Geumgang river, 27 of Yeongsan river, and 140 of Nakdong river. The total of 219 samples from the 28 counties were taken from the surface of the sediments at the depth of 50 cm. The particle density of the sediments was greater than $2.63Mg\;m^{-3}$ and the whole range of the density was $2.60{\sim}2.69Mg\;m^{-3}$, the average particle size was 0.7 mm whereas the size range was 0.075~0.85 mm. The analyses of the particle sizes by basins showed that Han and Geumgang river had particle sizes of 0.075~0.85 mm, while Geumgang and Yeongsan river had particle sizes of 0.25~0.85 mm. Geumgang and Yeongsan river tended to have greater particle sizes. The average values of the chemical properties were 6.3 for pH, $0.16dS\;m^{-1}$ for EC, $8g\;kg^{-1}$ for organic matter, $101mg\;kg^{-1}$ for available phosphate, 0.39, 3.47, and $0.93cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ for exchangeable potassium, calcium, and magnesium respectively. The greatest property at each basin was pH for Han river, Ec, available phosphate and exchangeable sodium for Geumgang river, organic matter, exchangeable calcium and magnesium for Yeongsan river, and exchangeable potassium for Nakdong river.

Tests for the physical and chemical properties on the dispersive soils from the 3 selected sites in the northeast region of Thailand were carried out in the field and laboratory. In oder to find out the relationship between c1ay contents and dispersivity of the soil, some specimens are artificially mixed with a certain amount of clay in the laboratory and tested by means of pinhole tests. The artificial soils are dispersed in pinhole tests regardless of their clay contents. Chemical properties on the soil saturation extract and reservoir water are also determined by means of sodium adsorption ratio (SA,R), exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) and pH. The dispersive soils in the region have ranges of 1.8~6.7 SAR, 1.4~7.9 ESP and 5.4~9.0 pH value. Namely, the dispersive soils studied have somewhat higher SAR, ESP and pH value than those of ordinary soil.

The objective of this research is an investigation of engineering properties of weathered granite soil mixed with Phosphogypsum and recycled EPS beads as an light-weighted soil. A series of geotechnical laboratory tests including physical index test, compaction test, CBR test and direct shear test were performed for various mixing ratios. Based on the laboratory test results, it was found that the maximum dry unit weight of the light weight soil ranges $1.46{\sim}1.61g/cm^3$ and the maximum dry unit weight decreases about 11~19.3% with the increase of amount of the recycled EPS beads and the optimum moisture content increase. Since the CBR values of the light weight soil ranges 10.4~18.4%, the light weight soil mixed with Phosphogypsum and recycled EPS beads can be used as a light weight backfill material on the soft soil.
This study was performed in Pinus rigida and Larix kaempferi plantations which occupy approximately 60% of artificial forest area in Korea. The objective of this study was to know the differences in soil physical and chemical properties between both plantations. Soil physical and chemical properties from published literature and analyzed soil data in national forest in 2010 and 2011 were analyzed by plantation regions and stand age of 5 years unit. Jeollanamdo in Pinus rigida plantations and Gyeongsangbuk-do in Larix kaempferi plantations showed higher soil chemical properties than those of other regions. Soil texture in both plantations was almost loam and sandy loam. Mean soil pH in Pinus rigida and Larix kaempferi plantations were 4.86 and 4.87, respectively and there was no relationship between soil pH and stand age. The mean concentrations of total nitrogen (%) and available phosphorus (mg $kg^{-1}$) were 0.21 and 11.00 for Pinus rigida plantation and 0.28 and 13.32 for Larix kaempferi plantation. In Larix kaempferi plantation, total nitrogen, available phosphorus and organic matter concentrations and C.E.C. were higher than those in Pinus rigida plantation and showed positive relationship with stand age. This positive relationship was also revealed between the exchangeable cations and soil pH. The results of this study provide an informative data in selecting tree species for planting and contribute to the establishing forest management plan for the maintenance of sustainable forests resources.
