  • Soil nailing systems are generally many used in underground excavations and reinforcements of slopes since the first construction as a temporary retaining wall in 1993, Korea. In recently, they are many attempts to expand the permanent reinforcements of slopes However, experimental studies related to soil nailing systems are insufficient Specially, there are no researches related in the large scaled load tests of soil nailed walls in Korea In this study, a case study on the large scaled load tests of soil nailed walls is introduced and the behavior characteristic of them is investigated Also, they are proposed allowable deformation corresponding to the serviceability limit of soil nail walls and ultimate deformation corresponding to the collapse state of the walls. These results can be applied to the maintenance management of soil nailed walls And analysis on the required minimum factor of safety of soil nailed walls using the relation curve of load ratio and deformation ratio are carried out

  • Recently, there have been numerous attempts to expand the traditional temporary soil nailing system into a permanent wall. Two reasons for this include the soil nailed system's advantage of efficient and economic use of subgrade space and its ability to decrease the total construction cost. However, the systematic and logical design approach has not been proposed yet. The permanent soil nailing wall system, which utilizes precast concrete from soil nailing system, is already used in many countries, but the study of cast-in-place concrete lacing or rigid walls in bottom-up construction of traditional soil nailing walls is imperfect and insufficient. In this paper, various laboratory model tests have been carried out to investigate the influence of parameters, including stiffness of the rigid wall to the soil nailing structure with respect to failure mode, displacement patterns and tensile forces at the nail head in several levels of load. Then, the variation of earth pressure distribution on the soil nailing wall, built with a rigid front plate, is sought through different levels of surcharge load and tensile forces at the nail head.

  • LEM (Limit Equilibrium Method) based programs are commonly used for the designs of soil nailing as a slope reinforcement. However, there is a drawback that the interaction between ground and soil nailing is not properly reflected in those programs, which needs to be solved. For economical constructions and designs, research is also required on the support pattern of soil nailing. In this study, therefore, reinforcement effects of soil nailing were compared and analyzed by performing finite difference analyses which could properly consider the interaction between ground and soil nailing. As a result, when the angle from slope to nail is $90^{\circ}$, failure slip surface becomes the largest and thus the factor of safety becomes maximum.

  • Soil nailing system can be mentioned to a method of supporting as the shear strength of in-situ soils is increased by passive inclusions. In the general soil nailing system, facing walls are used in two kind of a lattice concrete block or a cast in placed concrete wall. A case of lattice concrete blocks is used in slow slopes greater than 1:0.7. Also, a case of a cast in placed concrete wall is used in steep slopes less than 1:0.5. The cast in placed concrete walls are constructed to 30cm thick together with a shotcrete facing. In this study, the assembling soil nailing method as a new soil nailing system is proposed. This method is constructed assembly using precast concrete panels. Therefore ability of the construction and quality of the facings can be modified than a usual soil nailing system. Also, this method can be obtained the effects that a global slope stability increase, as precast concrete panels is put on cutting face after excavating a slope.

  • It is necessary, in the light of the importance of long-term slope stability problem, to develop a simple method or tool which can figure out the possible failure zone resulted from weathering effect and other factors. The FBG sensor system is used to estimate the correlations between the temperature and the slope in Kimhae, and to find a failure zone in slopes effectively. This research is to seek for the correlation between the soil temperature distribution and the strain distribution in a active zone by analyzing the data from the in-situ measurement so that the possible failure zone should be well defined based on the correlation. For instance, the zone of high temperature fluctuation can be regarded as one of the possible sliding zone due to the weathering effect while the constant temperature depth of the ground, if exists would not be relatively affected by the weathering process.

  • The benefits of utilizing internal reinforced members, such as soil nails and ground anchors, in maintaining stable excavations and slopes have been known among geotechnical engineers to be very effective. Occasionally, however, both soil nails and ground anchors are simultaneously used in one excavation site. In the present study, a method of limit equilibrium stability analysis of the excavation zone reinforced with the vertically or horizontally mixed nail-anchor system is proposed to evaluate the global safety factor with respect to a sliding failure. The postulated failure wedges are determined based on the results of the $FLAC^{2D}\; 및\; FLAC^{3D}$ program analyses. This study also deals with a determination of the required thickness of the shotcrete facing. An excessive facing thickness may be required due to both the stress concentration and the relative displacement at the interface zone between the soil nailing system and the ground anchor system. A simple finite element method of analysis is presented to estimate the corresponding relative displacement at the interface zone between two different support systems. As an efficient resolution to reduce the facing thickness, the modified bearing plate system is also proposed. Finally with various analysis related to the effects of design parameters, the predicted displacements are compared with the results of the $FLAC^{2D}$ program analyses.

  • In this study reinforcing effect of soil nailed-drilled shafts subjected to axial and lateral loads were evaluated. Special attention was given to the reinforcing effects of soil nails placed from the drilled shafts to surrounding weathered- and soft-rocks based on model tests, numerical analyses and load tests. The model tests and numerical analyses are conducted to analyze the reinforcing effect of various conditions of number, inclination, position and length. The results of 1/40 scale model tests and numerical analyses show that as the number of reinforcing level increases, the incremental effect of reinforcement tends to increase, whereas the reinforcing effect on relative position is negligible. In addition there is a reinforcing effect as the inclination angle increaes up to 30 degrees. Based on the results of tensile load tests, soil nailed-drilled shafts has a considerably smaller settlement to reach the ultimate level when compared with the result of un-reinforced drilled shafts. For compression tests, there is a reinforcing effect of about 200% measured.

  • Green Slope(F.F.R : Fabric Form Reinforcement Method) is one of an environmental slope protection method at steep cutting sites. This method is that soil and rock at the steep slope is fixed using the environmental Fabric Form, Nail, Rock Bolt and Rock Anchor, And then, the surfaces covered with grasses or weeds. This method will be satisfied both safe slope protection and natural environment appearance. Green Slope is a useful method of the construction sites of steep cutting slopes.

  • The reinforced earth wall, which is able to improve the strength of soil highly, is required in case of supporting high surcharge load such as high speed rail way, high embankment road, and massive reinforced earth wall in a mountainous area. And also, it is continuously required that the method is able to minimize the amount of excavated soil on account of environmental issue, boundary of land, etc., on excavation site. However, because the required length of reinforcement should be $60{\sim}80%$ of the height of reinforced earth wall for general reinforced earth wall, in fact the reinforced earth wall is hardly applied on the site of cut slope. In this paper we studied the design and construction cases of hybrid reinforcement retaining wall system combined with steel strips and soil nails, connecting the reinforced earth wall reinforcements to the slope stability reinforcements (soil nails) to ensure sufficient resistance by means of reducing the length of reinforcements of reinforced earth wall. And the feasibility of hybrid reinforcement retaining wall system, suggested by real data measured on site, is also discussed.
