  • Recently, Umbrella Arch Method(UAM) is commonly used in order to enhance the stability of tunnel itself and stabilize the adjacent surface structure. But quantitative estimation of reinforcement effect is needed because UAM is designed and constructed only on the basis of empirical experience. By using 3-dimensional finite element method, parametric study is performed for elastic modulus of ground and overburden, and reinforcement effect is analyzed quantitatively. From the results, surface settlement decreases about 9%∼27% in soil tunnel, about 4%∼24% in weathered rock tunnel and 4%∼17% in soft rock tunnel when applied with UAM. The prediction equation for final surface settlement is suggested through regression analysis and the equation is expressed as exponential function which has variable Smax, unknown coefficient i and k.

  • The prediction of driving stresses in piles is necessary for optimum selection of driving hammers, better design of precast piles, enact assessment of drivabilities and complete description of piling specifications. However, the existing pile-driving formulas based on the theory of Newtonian impact have some defects and shortcomings; the numerical method by the wave equation analysis using electronic computer usually Involves various uncertainties and limitations which can yield erroneous outcomes because it employs soil constants of which the nature is unknown as essential parameters and ignores the effect of residual stresses set up in the pile .after each hammer blow; and the electronic measuring technique needs extra time and expense. The method developed herein is presented for the purpose of giving field engineers a reliable and convenient analytical procedure for the prediction of driving stresses along the full length of pile using the most effetive parameters without resort to electronic computer. This method is based on the fundamental mechanics of stress waves in elastic rods and takes into account the effect of residual stresses induced by reversed friction in piles.

  • In this paper, a mechanical analysis model for steep-slope log-skidding operations of a rubber-tired tractor is discussed and the applicability of the model is investigated. The model largely consists of mathematical analysis models for log drag, dynamic vehicle weight distributions and soil-vehicle traction. For the case study, a theoretical data set for log skidding operations is used in investigating the effect of the factors influencing the results of mechanical analysis or the productivity of skidding operations. The analyses include 1) the effect of log choking methods on tangential log-skidding force, 2) the effects of the change in travel speed and log load on the required input power to the wheels and 3) the log skidding performance of a two-wheel drive compared with that of a four-wheel drive.

  • This paper presents a study on the mechanical behavior of buried pipelines crossing faults using experimental and numerical methods. A self-made soil-box was used to simulate normal fault, strike-slip fault and oblique slip fault. The effects of some important parameters, including the displacement and type of fault, the buried depth and the diameter of pipe, on the deformation modes and axial strain distribution of the buried pipelines crossing faults was studied in the experiment. Furthermore, a finite element analysis (FEA) model of spring boundary was developed to investigate the performance of the buried pipelines crossing faults, and FEA results were compared with experimental results. It is found that the axial strain distribution of those buried pipelines crossing the normal fault and the oblique fault is asymmetrical along the fault plane and that of buried pipelines crossing the strike-slip fault is approximately symmetrical. Additionally, the axial peak strain appears near both sides of the fault and increases with increasing fault displacement. Moreover, the axial strain of the pipeline decreases with decreasing buried depth or increasing ratios of pipe diameter to pipe wall thickness. Compared with the normal fault and the strike-slip fault, the oblique fault is the most harmful to pipelines. Based on the accuracy of the model, the regression equations of the axial distance from the peak axial strain position of the pipeline to the fault under the effects of buried depth, pipe diameter, wall thickness and fault displacement were given.

  • Traditional limit equilibrium method needs an assumption of the failure surface to calculate the bearing capapcity of the shallow foundation. From the viewpoint of the mechanics of granular materials, however, the failure of the soil mass is initated by the local buckling of the contact force chains. In this study we observed the directional distribution of the contact force chains in the granular assembly stacked by model particles subjected to the model shallow foundation during loading. Two sets of the assemblies with a regular structure and initially local imperfection were prepared for tests. Existence of the initial local imperfection has a significant effect on the directional distribution of the contact force chains. The bearing capacity of the assembly with local imperfection is only 67% the capacity of the assembly with the regular structure.

  • Excavation of underground space in soft ground implicate to the structure, such as subsidence. As a result, it has been acting as a serious risk to the stability of the roads and facilities. Therefore, in order to stabilize the soil stabilization and reinforcement of the structure, we have been using a number of methods and injecting material. In this study, we compared and analyzed the amount of subsidence regarding the ground reinforcement during underground excavation in soft ground by performing model test. And three-dimensional numerical analysis was performed using FLAC 3D. The subsidence was simulated numerically according to the tunnel excavation. The subsidence results of the model tests and numerical analyzes were relatively consistent. Thus comparing the ground subsidence by varying the reinforcement area on the numerical analysis was analyzed. As a results, three-dimensional numerical simulation could be regarded to simulate better on the ground subsidence by various kinds of underground excavation and it can be used as a material of subsidence prevention methods.

  • Institutional inertia anti-disaster standard was presented mainly on the upper surface, it is necessary to improve to the soil type standard and uplift the resistance standard greenhouse that are vulnerable to strong winds. In this study, we carried out a field test using the load control method in order to evaluate the uplift resistance of continuous foundation of greenhouse with different depths of the rafters. Institutional inertia anti-disaster standard of greenhouse foundation did not protect the greenhouse structure from the damages caused by strong winds and heavy snow. Therefore, field tests for behavior characteristics of continuous greenhouse foundation were carried out to ensure stable facility cultivation. The field test condition was evaluated using different embedded depth as follows: 30cm, 40cm, 50cm and spacing 50cm, 60cm, 70 cm. As a result of the uplift resistance field tests using the load control method, the minimum uplift resistance was found to be over 90kg and uplift resistance displacement was 9.4mm. Uplift resistance of the continuous greenhouse foundation was in the range of 90-180 kg according to embedded depth and spacing. Using the test condition, there was no constant trend in the uplift resistance.

  • A new analytical derivation of the elastodynamic point load solutions for an isotropic multi-layered half-space is presented by means of the precise integration method (PIM) and the approach of dual vector. The time-harmonic external load is prescribed either on the external boundary or in the interior of the solid medium. Starting with the axisymmetric governing motion equations in a cylindrical coordinate system, a second order ordinary differential matrix equation can be gained by making use of the Hankel integral transform. Employing the technique of dual vector, the second order ordinary differential matrix equation can be simplified into a first-order one. The approach of PIM is implemented to obtain the solutions of the ordinary differential matrix equation in the Hankel integral transform domain. The PIM is a highly accurate algorithm to solve sets of first-order ordinary differential equations and any desired accuracy of the dynamic point load solutions can be achieved. The numerical simulation is based on algebraic matrix operation. As a result, the computational effort is reduced to a great extent and the computation is unconditionally stable. Selected numerical trials are given to validate the accuracy and applicability of the proposed approach. More examples are discussed to portray the dependence of the load-displacement response on the isotropic parameters of the multi-layered media, the depth of external load and the frequency of excitation.
