This research was performed to evaluate the feasibility of in situ soil flushing for TPH-contaminated soil remediation. It was conducted in batch test as fundamental research for in situ soil flushing. The 30% of initial TPH concentration was removed by shaking only in batch test. The removal efficiency of TPH in case of groundwater as surfactant dilution solution was approximate 2~6% lower than that of distilled water. Mixing ratio of soil to surfactant solution did not practically effect on the TPH removal efficiency. In the experiment of using single or mixed surfactant solution with 0.1~4.0 wt%, Tween-80, SWA-1503, SWA-1503+SDS showed averagely over 80%. It was determined that the optimum surfactant concentration was 0.1 wt% because there was no significant difference between concentrations of 0.1~4.0 wt%.

[ $^{222}Rn\;and\;^{226}Ra$ ] in groundwater were determined simultaneously using a gamma-spectroscopy. A nitrogen flushing equipment has been used for elimination and stabilization of high and unstable background activity due to the radon and its progenies in counting shield and room. The aim of present work was to control the background activity for simultaneous measurement of radium$(^{226}Ra)$ and radon$(^{222}Rn)$ in groundwater using a gamma-spectrometry. Background activity was about 1.0dps and the standard deviation was about 50%, The background activity could be minimized using nitrogen flushing equipment in the range of 0.1 to 0.5 and the RSD was about 5% at the experimental condition. The detection limit of $^{222}Rn\;and\;^{226}Ra$ in groundwater was 0.5dps/L in the background control method. In most groundwater used in the work, radon activity was more than the detection limit. However, radium activity in some groundwater was less than the detection limit. If the low level radium in groundwater must be measured, preconcentration process such as concentration should be performed before measuring the groundwater.
The optimal operation conditions of electrofloatation for oil-water separation of soil flushing effluent including electrolyte and pH were investigated. The reactor (200 ${\times}$ 10 ${\times}$ 15 cm) for the experiment was constructed by using acrylic plate. Diesel concentration was 1,000 mg/L in the 1 % mixed surfactant solution ($POE_5$: $POE_{14}$ 1: 1). Titanium coated electrode was used as cathode and stainless steel electrode as anode. Reaction time was 62 minutes (reaction time: 60 min., flotation time: 2 min.) and voltage was 6 V. The separation efficiency of electrofloatation was improved to 40% by electrolyte addition. Furthermore, NaCl (1N) added as electrolyte was showed enhanced efficiency compared to NaOH (1N). While, the effect of both NaCl and NaOH was sequentially increased in the range of 0.2∼1.0% (0.02∼0.1 M). The equilibrium time was found as 20 min. in the range of 0.4∼1.0% (0.04∼0.1M) for both of them.
The optimal operation conditions, including voltage applied, reaction time, distance between electrodes. and electrode material. were investigated for the treatment of soil flushing effluent using electrofloatation. When 3V was applied for 1 hour, 88% oil-water separation efficiency was achieved. In case of 6V and above, 90% efficiencies were achieved. As reaction time and distance between electrodes were longer, separation efficiencies were higher and lower, respectively. Separation efficiencies for different anode materials were copper > aluminum > iron > titanium. It might result from the differences of their electrical conductivities.

In this study, the feasibility of soil washing and soil flushing was investigated to treat Zn-contaminated railroad soil. Various organic acids including ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citric acid as well as inorganic acids such as hydrochloric acid (HCl) and phosphoric acid were tested to evaluate washing efficiency. Generally, inorganic acid showed higher removal efficiency compared to organic acids. Particularly, EDTA, well known as the most effective washing agent for removal of heavy metals from soil, was not efficient to remove zinc in this study. Among washing agents tested in this study, HCl was the most effective. However, it is not effective to use HCl solution over 0.1 M concentration. Sequential process using HCl was effective to enhance the removal efficiency of zinc. In column test, the removal efficiency of Zn was 27%. Accordingly, it is feasible to treat Zn-contaminated railroad soil using soil washing or flushing with HCI.
Recombinant bioluminescent bacterial strains that use specific promoters fused to the bioluminescence genes (lux genes) have been applied in environmental monitoring. Advantages of using recombinant bioluminescent bacteria as blosensing cells include rapid responses, low costs, and improved reproducibility. In this study, a recombinant Escherichia coli, GC2, containing a lac::luxCDABE fusion immobilized with solid agar media and glass beads was used to estimate the effect of this soil flushing technique. This bacterium constitutively emits light under normal conditions (no toxic chemicals). When growth and metabolism of these bioluminescent bacteria is inhibited by their exposure to toxic chemicals, the bioluminescence (BL) is reduced. A biosurfactant, rhamnolipids, was used to extract phenanthrene from the soil after flushing.
Lab scale batch and column tests were performed to investigate the treatability of petroleum contaminated soil using the in-situ soil flushing method. The pyrex column (4.5$\times$25 cm) was used to investigate optimal washing agent, surfactant concentration, mixing ratio, and inlet velocity. The miked surfactant of $POE_{14}$ and SDS were determined as ideal systems for the batch tests. From the results of preliminary tests, mixed surfactant was found to be more harmful for microorganisms. So $POE_{5}$ and $POE_{14}$ were chosen as the surfactant system for the batch study. The washing efficiency for the diesel contaminated soil was increased until 1 %, and decreased after l %. When applied as selected mixed surfactant, the ideal mixed ratio was recognized as 1:1. Therefore we selected miked surfactant $POE_{5}$ and $POE_{14}$, surfactant concentration 1%, and mixed ratio 1:1 for the remediation of diesel contaminated soil. In column tests, the total removal efficiency was improved as the flux of washing agent was increased. At the same pore volume, small flux showed better removal efficiency.
The electrokinetic technique has been applied to remove mainly the heavy metal and the ultrasonic technique to remove mainly organic substance in contaminated soil. In this study, the combined electrokinetic and ultrasonic remediation technique was studied far the removal of heavy metal and organic substance in contaminated soils. This study emphasized the coupled effects of electrokinetic and ultrasonic techniques on migration as well as remediation of contaminants in soils. The laboratory soil flushing tests combining electrokinetic and ultrasonic technique were conducted using specially designed and fabricated devices to determine the effect of both of these techniques. A series of laboratory experiments involving the simple, electrokinetic, ultrasonic, and electrokinetic & ultrasonic flushing test were carried out. A soil admixed with sand and kaolin was used as a test specimen, and Pb and ethylene glycol were used as contaminants of heavy metal and organic substance. An increase in out flow, permeability and contaminant removal rate was observed in electrokinetic and ultrasonic flushing tests. Some practical implications of these results are discussed in terms of technical feasibility of in situ implementation of electrokinetic ultrasonic remediation technique.
