Bacillus amyloliquefaciens GR4-5 was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of Korean ginseng and displayed broad-spectrum suppression of ginseng root rot pathogens. The survivability of B. amyloliquefaciens GR4-5 in soil was investigated under three different conditions; indoor, outdoor - of which soil was put in 14 mL tube after treatment - and field environments. Soil samples were collected over a four-week period from three experimental designs, and assessed for 16S rRNA gene copy number by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). In outdoor condition, the 16S rRNA gene copy number of Bacillus spp. was 8.35 log copies g $soil^{-1}$ immediately after the GR4-5 treatment. Two weeks later, the 16S rRNA gene copy number of Bacillus spp. (6.70 log copies g $soil^{-1}$) was similar to that of the control (6.38 log copies g $soil^{-1}$). In indoor condition, the 16S rRNA gene copy number of Bacillus spp. maintained in a certain level for a longer period than those in outdoor and field. The 16S rRNA gene copy number of Bacillus spp. in field experiment was reduced faster than that of outdoor condition. Our results show that B. amyloliquefaciens GR4-5 can survive in bulk soil for 1 week, indicating its potential use as a biocontrol agent following 7 day application intervals. This study presents that outdoor microcosm system design could be a useful method to assess easily the survivability of beneficial microorganisms.
BACKGROUND: Biochar is a solid material converted from agricultural biomass such as crop residues and pruning branch through pyrolysis under limited oxygen supply. Biochar consists of non-degradable carbon (C) double bonds and aromatic ring that are not readily broken down by microbial degradation in the soils. Due to the recalcitrancy of C in biochar, biochar application to the soils is of help in enhancing soil carbon sequestration in arable lands that might be a strategy of agricultural sector to mitigate climate change. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data were collected from studies on the effect of biochar application on soil C content conducted in East Asian countries including China, Japan and Korea under different experimental conditions (incubation, column, pot, and field). The magnitude of soil C storage was positively correlated (p < 0.001) with biochar application rate under field conditions, reflecting accumulation of recalcitrant black C in the biochar. However, The changes in soil C contents per C input from biochar (% per t/ha) were 6.80 in field condition, and 12.58 in laboratory condition. The magnitude of increment of soil C was lower in field than in laboratory conditions due to potential loss of C through weathering of biochar under field conditions. Biochar production condition also affected soil C increment; more C increment was found with biochar produced at a high temperature (over 450℃). CONCLUSION: This review suggests that biochar application is a potential measures of C sequestration in agricultural soils. However, as the increment of soil C biochar was affected by biochar types, further studies are necessary to find better biochar types for enhanced soil C storage.
To study the behavior of $NH_4{^+}$ of CMS (condensed molasses solubles) in soil, a laboratory incubation experiment was conducted during a period of up to 21 days at $25^{\circ}C$. The $NH_4{^+}$ of CMS was labeled with $^{15}N$ and was applied to water-unsturated and water-saturated conditions. Soil pH was gradually decreased from 6.1 to 5.4 under unsaturated condition. However, soil pH was increased to 6.5 within 2 days under saturated condition and then was constant. The concentration of ammonium was decreased 3 times faster under unsaturated condition than under saturated condition. The concentration of nitrate was increased from 17.4 to $155.4mg\;kg^{-1}$ under unsaturated condition. But concentration of nitrate was kept with low(below $8.0mg\;kg^{-1}$) under saturated condition. During the incubation, 52.4% of $^{15}NH_4{^+}$ applied was existed in the form of $NO_3{^-}$ by nitrification under unsaturated condition. Most of applied nitrogen was immobilized within 4 days of incubation. On 21 days of the incubation the percentage of immobilized nitrogen derived from $^15NH_4{^+}$(NDFA) was 19.6% under unsaturated condition and 17.0% under saturated condition. The percentage of unaccounted N, which was lost by denitrification, was 28.4% under unsturated condition and 67.6% under saturated condition.
The paper focuses on the seismic responses of a hyperbolic cooling tower resting on soil foundation represented by the three-parameter Vlasov elastic soil model. The three-parameter soil model eliminates the necessity of field testing to determine soil parameters such as reaction modulus and shear parameter. These parameters are calculated using an iterative procedure depending on the soil surface vertical deformation profile in the model. The soil and tower system are modeled in SAP2000 structural analysis program using a computing tool coded in MATLAB. The tool provides a two-way data transfer between SAP2000 and MATLAB with the help of Open Application Programming Interface (OAPI) feature of SAP2000. The response spectrum analyses of the tower system with circular V-shaped supporting columns and annular raft foundation on elastic soil are conducted thanks to the coded tool. The shell and column forces and displacements are presented for different soil conditions and fixed raft base condition to investigate the effects of soil-structure interaction. Numerical results indicate that the flexibility of soil foundation leads to an increase in displacements but a decrease in shell membrane and column forces. Therefore, it can be stated that the consideration of soil-structure interaction in the seismic response analysis of the cooling tower system provides an economical design process.

In order to evaluate the exact effect of detergency it is necessary both to measure the actual soil content by chemical analysis and to determine the degree of soil removal visually. Since it takes considerable time and effort to use both methods, usually one of the two methods is used. Many studies have been carried out through increasing the visibility of oily soil to evaluate detergency by measuring reflectance of fabrics. In this study Sudan Black B, an oil soluble dye was used as an indicator to increase the visibility of oily soil on cotton and polyester fabrics. The condition of artificially soiled fabrics and the method of evaluating detergency were investigated which represent the actual detergency of oily soil by measuring the reflectance only. Also the detergency of Sudan Black B and that of oily soil were compared with each other under various washing conditions, As a result, the K/S values converted from the reflectances showed a good correlation with the actual soil content. Linear relationship between K/S value and the actual soil content was obtained. The K/S values of washed fabrics were higher than those of unwashed fabrics which included same content of soil since the soil visibility changed during washing. But the difference was small when Sudan Black B was used. With the increase of soil content, detergency of cotton fabric decreased, but detergency of polyester fabric increased gradually. With regards to soiled fabrics, detergency of cotton fabric measured by K/S value was close to that of actual oily soil when Sudan black B was used as an indicator.
The soil loss by rainfalls or runoffs has been one of the main environment problems in 20th century. The soil loss cause the various problems those are decreasing of the agricultural productivity, desolating of pasture land and disturbing of water flowing. Therefore, it is very important to measure properly various factors those are affecting to soil loss and to recognize a seriousness of soil loss problem. In this study, we use the USLE(Universal Soil Loss Equation) as a basic approaching way for soil loss analysis in a watershed, and the GSIS(Geo-Spatial Information System) technique is applied to evaluate for factors those are related to the USLE. The results of this study are consisted of three parts those are to build up the various topographical information that is needed for analysis of wide area soil loss by using the USLE, to evaluate the factors those are needed to the USLE, to estimate the soil loss condition of subbasin in the watershed.
This study was carried out to suggest an experimental base to maintain the sustainability of extensive green roof as considering moisture demand by the type of the green roof plant before construction. The changes of soil moisture content, chlorophyll content, coverage of Sedum kamtschaticum and Dianthus chinensis var. senperflorens in two type of perlite soil and mix soil, were investigated under the condition of no rainfall and no irrigation during one month. The result shows that with the increase of stress time, soil moisture content and chlorophyll content on leaf were in a downward trend; After 30 days, Soil moisture content were lowest in 10 cm depth perlite soil system planted Dianthus chinensis. and 20 cm depth mix soil system planted Sedum kamtschaticum had the highest soil moisture. Generally soil moisture contents of soil system planted Dianthus chinensis var. senperflorens were lower than that of soil system planted Sedum kamtschaticum. In 10 cm depth soil system, state of plant growth was better than 20 cm depth soil system both perlite soil and mix soil type. It can be confirmed.
Calcareous soil is originated from marine biogenic sediments and weathering of carbonate rocks. The formation history for calcareous sediment includes complex physical, biological and chemical processes. It is preferably selected as the major fill materials for hydraulic reclamation and artificial island construction. Calcareous sands possess inter pores and complex shape are liable to be damaged at normal working stress level due to its fragile nature. Thus, the engineering properties of calcareous soil are greatly affected by its high compressibility and crushability. A series of triaxial shear tests were performed on calcareous sands derived from South China Sea under different test conditions. The effects of confining pressure, particle size, grading, compactness, drainage condition, and water content on the total amount of particle breakage for calcareous soil were symmetrically investigated. The test results showed that the crushing extent of calcareous sand with full gradation was smaller than that a single particle group under the same test condition. Large grains are cushioned by surrounding small particles and such micro-structure reduces the probability of breakage for well-graded sands. The increasing tendency of particle crushing for calcareous sand with a rise in confining pressure and compactness is confirmed. It is also evident that a rise in water content enhances the amount of particle breakage for calcareous sand. However, varying tendency of particle breakage with grain size is still controversial and requires further examination.
