The heat exchange between the Borehole Heat Exchanger(BHE) and the surrounding ground depends directly on ground thermal conductivity k at the certain site. The k is thus a key parameter in designing BHE and coupled geothermal heat pump systems. Currently, although a thermal hydraulic response test(TRT) is mostly used in practice, the thermal hydraulic TRT needs additional power and is generally time-consuming. A new, simple wireless P/T probe for a hi-speed k determination was introduced in this paper. This technique using a wireless P/T probe is less time-consuming and requires no external source of energy for measurement and predicts local thermal properties by measuring soil temperatures along the depth. Measured temperature data along the depth was analyzed. In order to verify the new technique for the determination of ground thermal conductivity, ground thermal conductivity k that calculated from the measured temperature data using a wireless P/T probe was compared with one obtained from conventional hydraulic TRT. When comparing the average k of two methods, the relative error was approximately 10%. As a result, the electronic TRT can replace the conventional hydraulic TRT method after carrying out the additional research on a lot of sites.
Use of geothermal energy has been increased for its economical application and environmentally friendly utilization. Particularly, for energy piles, a spiral coil type ground heat exchanger (GHE) is more preferred than line type GHEs such as U and W shaped GHEs. A PHC energy pile with spiral coil type GHE was installed in an area of partially saturated dredged soil deposit, and a thermal response test (TRT) was conducted for 240 hours under a continuous operation condition. Besides, remolded soil samples from different layers were collected in the field, and soil specimens were reconstructed according to the field ground condition. Non-steady state probe methods were conducted in the lab, and ground thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity were measured for the different soil layers. An equivalent ground thermal conductivity was calculated from the lab test results and it was compared with the field TRT result. The difference was less than 5%, which advocates the use of an equivalent ground thermal conductivity for the multi-layered ground. Furthermore, this paper also represents an equivalent ground thermal diffusivity evaluation method which is another very important design parameter.

This paper presents how to analyze heat transfer characteristics of double-layered soils. Thermal response tests were conducted to measure the ground thermal conductivities of Joomunjin sand and double layered soils filled in a steel box of which the size is $5m{\times}1m{\times}1m$. Double-layered soils were composed of Joomunjin sand and Kaoline clay. Each thermal conductivity of Joomunjin sand and Kaloine clay was measured by using Heat Flow Meter considering different void ratio. The ground thermal conductivity of double-layered soils was 15% smaller than that of Joomunjin sand.

Soil samples from the King Sejong Station in Antarctic and Vladivostok were tested in the laboratory and specific gravity, compaction curve, grain size distribution were determined. The effect of temperature change on the thermal conductivity, unfrozen water content, compressive strength were investigated. In addition, the change of tensile strength with temperature of the soil from Vladivostok was measured. Samples for the compressive strength test and tensional strength test were prepared in a mould with a fixed volume to prevent swelling. Also the effects of temperature and water content change on those strength were compared. Results from the thermal conductivity test showed that thermal conductivity values for both soils was larger at temperatures below freezing than those above freezing. The unfrozen water content dropped rapidly within a temperature range of $0{\sim}-5^{\circ}C$ and then gradually decreased further $-20^{\circ}C$. Compressive strength test results showed various stress/deformation curves with a change in water content. Sandy soil of the King Sejong Station had a much larger strength than ice at an identical temperature, while clayey soil of Vladivostok had a smaller strength than ice in the initial stage, but showed a larger strength at temperatures belows $-15^{\circ}C$. Tensile strength tests revealed an increase in the strength with a decreasing temperature.
A one-dimensional heat transfer model for the vertical borehole system is derived in this study to predict the thermal behavior of the system and surrounding soil. In this model the U-tube is replaced with one effective tube of effective diameter which is surrounded by concentric grout region. All thermal resistances of borehole are counted in the grout region with effective thermal conductivity of grout. Effective thermal conductivity of grout and sand are calculated through parameter estimation. The validity of this model is accomplished through comparison of the predicted temperature profiles of the model with experimental data.
The high temperature and water content in soil profile probably affect the physiological disorder especially on cool-season turfgrasses in warm and humid weather of Korean summer. The purpose of this research was to analyze the effect of soil temperature and water content on the growth and stress response of creeping bentgrass(Agrostis palustris Huds.) under a humid and warm temperature. USGA(United State of Golf Association) green profile in laboratory test, Daily temperature changes were tested under a dried sand, 70% water content of field capacity, and saturated condition at $34^{\circ}C$ of the USGA green in lab. In this test, the dried sand reached to $80^{\circ}C$, however, the surface temperature decrease of $10^{\circ}C$ on the saturated condition. In the thermal properties test in field, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and soil temperature were increased followed by irrigation practise. In the water-deficient condition, the highest soil temperature was reached temporally right after irrigation, however, the excessive soil water content higher than field water holding capacity showed the highest soil temperature after a while. This result indicated that a heat damage to root system was caused from the thermal conductivity of a high surface soil temperature. The excessive irrigation when a high turf surface temperature should occur a negative result on tufgrass growth, moreover, it would be fatal to root growth of creeping bentgrass, especially when associated with a poor draining system on USGA sand green. Overall, this study shows that high soil temperature with water-excessive condition negatively affects on cool-season grass during the summer season, suggesting that excessive irrigation, over 70% field capacity of soil condition, does not help to reduce soil temperature for summer season in Korea. In the study that cool-season grass were treated with different water content of soil, The soil had higher temperature and more water holding capacity when treatment rate of soil conditioner was increased. The best growth at the normal water condition and the worst state of growth at thee water-excessive condition were observed.

To determine the frost heave suppressing mechanism of soil mixed with tire powder, we conducted three kinds of laboratory experiments: measurement of unfrozen water, evaluation of thermal conductivity, and a frost heave. In this research, we focused on changes in the coefficient of permeability of the mixed soil, and first found that of the unsaturated soil. Next, in the case of the presence of ice, we took the ice-impeding factor into consideration to derive the coefficient of permeability of the frozen fringe from the area ratio of the soil and tire powder in mixed soil. The results show a positive correlation between the water intake rate and the coefficient of permeability. Moreover, we found that the frost heave decreased thanks to a reduction in the permeability and a fall in the unfrozen water content of the soil mixed with tire powder. We also calculated the weight of the water content of the soil and tire powder void quantitatively using the result of the volumetric ratio of mixed soil.

Three years of frost heave field experiments were conducted to evaluate a method for reducing heave using a recycled tire powder-soil mixture. By mixing Tomakomai soil with 20% recycled tire powder, frost heave amount was drastically decreased. The results of the field experiment confirm that recycled tire powder is an excellent material for use in controlling the total amount of heave. The restraining effect of a recycled tire powder-soil mixture is qualitatively analyzed based on amount of frost heave, frost heave ratio, thermal conductivity, permeability and segregation potential theory.

GHX (Geothermal Heat Exchanger) design which determines the performance and initial cost is the most important factor in ground source heat pump system. Performance of GHX is strongly dependent on the thermal resistance of soil, grout and pipe. In general, GHX design is based on the static simulation program. In this study, dynamic simulation has been peformed to analyze the variation of system performance for various GHX parameters. Line-source theory has been applied to calculate the variation of ground temperature. The averaged weather data measured during a 10-year period $(1991\sim2000)$ in Seoul is used to calculate cooling and heating loads of a building with a floor area of $100m^2$. The simulation results indicate that thermal properties of borehole play significant effect on the overall performance. Change of grout thermal conductivity from 0.4 to $3.0W/(m^{\circ}C)$ increases COP of heating by 9.4% and cooling by 17%. Change of soil thermal conductivity from 1.5 to $4.0W/(m^{\circ}C)$ increases COP of heating by 13.3% and cooling by 4.4%. Change of GHX(length from 100 to 200 m increases COP of heating by 10.6% and cooling by 10.2%. To study long term performance, dynamic simulation has been conducted for a 20-year period and the result showed that soil temperature decreases by $1^{\circ}C$, heating COP decreases by 2.7% and cooling COP decreases by 1.4%.
