The purpose of this study is to develop landslide susceptibility analysis techniques using artificial neural network and to apply the newly developed techniques to the study area of Boun in Korea. Landslide locations were identified in the study area from interpretation of aerial photographs, field survey data, and a spatial database of the topography, soil type, timber cover, geology and land use. The landslide-related factors (slope, aspect, curvature, topographic type, soil texture, soil material, soil drainage, soil effective thickness, timber type, timber age, and timber diameter, timber density, geology and land use) were extracted from the spatial database. Using those factors, landslide susceptibility was analyzed by artificial neural network methods. For this, the weights of each factor were determinated in 3 cases by the backpropagation method, which is a type of artificial neural network method. Then the landslide susceptibility indexes were calculated and the susceptibility maps were made with a GIS program. The results of the landslide susceptibility maps were verified and compared using landslide location data. A GIS was used to efficiently analyze the vast amount of data, and an artificial neural network was turned out be an effective tool to maintain precision and accuracy.
In order to understand shoreline environment characteristics of Korean reservoirs, the interrelationships between environmental factors of geomorphology, hydrology, water quality and shoreline soil were analyzed, and the reservoir types were classified according to their environmental characteristics in the 35 reservoirs selected by considering the purpose of dam operations and annual water-level fluctuations. Geomorphological and hydrological characteristics of reservoirs were correlated with the altitude and the size scale of reservoirs. The annual range of water level fluctuation showed a wide variation from 1 m to 27 m in the various reservoirs in Korea. The levels of eutrophication of most reservoirs were mesotrophic or eutrophic. From the result of the soil texture analysis, sand contents were high in reservoir shorelines. Range, frequency and duration of water-level fluctuation were distinctive from the primary function of reservoirs. Flood control reservoirs had a wide range with low frequency and waterpower generation reservoirs had a narrow range with high frequency in the water-level fluctuation. According to the result of CART (classification and regression tree) analysis, the water quality of reservoirs was classified by water depth, range of water-level fluctuation and altitude. The result of PCA (principal component analysis) showed that the type of reservoirs was classified by reservoir size, water-level fluctuation, water quality, soil texture and soil organic matter. In conclusion, reservoir size, the water-level fluctuation, water quality and soil characteristics might be major factors in the environment of reservoir shorelines in Korea.

This study was conducted with the data of monitoring on soil chemical properties of rice paddy soils in Gyeongbuk Province. The selected soil chemical properties were analyzed every 4 year from 1999 to 2015. The soil pH measured in 2015 was higher than pH 6.0, which was 0.3-0.4 pH unit higher than data until 2007 survey year. The mean content of organic matter was greater than $24g\;kg^{-1}$ since 2003, but 35% of soil samples remained below the recommended level ($20-30g\;kg^{-1}$) in 2015. The mean concentration of available phosphate was maintained at $40mg\;kg^{-1}$ higher than the upper recommendation level ($80-120mg\;kg^{-1}$), and more than 40% of paddy soils tested were found to have less than the recommendation level during the survey period. The exchangeable K concentration ranged from 0.25 to $0.39cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$. Exchangeable Ca showed an average at the optimum range ($5.0-6.0cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$) during the monitoring period. Exchangeable Mg decreased linearly ($0.02cmol_c\;kg^{-1}\;year^{-1}$) from $1.55cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ as of 1999 to below the lower level of the recommendation range ($1.5-2.0cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$). The amount of available $SiO_2$ was increased significantly from 2011 to over the recommendation level (${\geq}157mg\;kg^{-1}$). It was revealed that the soil chemical properties of rice paddy fields was influenced by topology, soil texture, type and region as result of principal component analysis or cluster analysis. Therefore, an assessment on chemical properties of rice paddy soils should be performed to consider various soil physical conditions and agronomic practices such as fertilization, cropping system, and so on. Because of the high variability of nutrient levels across Gyeongbuk Province, nutrient management based on soil fertility test is required by respective farm land unit.
The purpose of this study was to understand the geographical and environmental distribution of wild animals in Baekdudaegan region using field survey and GIS data. Crucial factors were selected and analyzed to understand the distributional characteristics of wild animals (7 species in 6 families) and rare endemic plants (14 species in 11 families). These crucial factors include stand factors (forest type, DBH class, and crown density), soil factors (bed rock, soil texture, and organic matter), geographical factors (elevation, slope, aspect) and climatic factors (temperature, rain fall, humidity). Finally, 10 factors were selected by statistical analysis and categorized for analyzing geographical and environmental features. Four families such as Muridae, Sciuridae, Suidae and Talpidea in wild animal showed the similar habitat characteristics with the 10 factors.

Yellow to reddish brown soil is generally referred to as hwangto and is used in various industries in Korea. Despite the fact that it is used as an inorganic pigment in dancheong, limited studies have been conducted on the properties of pigments associated with soil and on the mineralogical characteristics of hwangto. This study examines how the pedological and mineralogical features of hwangto affect pigment properties. Results indicate that reddish and yellowish soils have differences in terms of soil texture, mineral composition, oil absorption and stability under light. Reddish soil is mostly found in clay regions, whereas Ulleungdo hwangto is found in loam regions. Yellowish soil is mostly present in the clay loam to loam zones. whereas Haenam hwangto exists in the sandy clay loam zone. As a result of a mineralogical analysis, reddish soil is classified into the feldspar group and clay soil. The major minerals in the yellowish soils are similar however these soils differ in terms of clay mineral compositions. results of the characteristics of pigments prepared by the traditional method revealed that the average particle size is in the range of 10-20 ㎛, reddish soil has an average of 20 ml/100 g higher oil absorption than yellowish soil. In addition, reddish soil is more susceptible to discoloration and deterioration under light than yellowish soil. This study confirms that the soil and mineral characteristics of hwangto affect the physical properties and stability of produced pigments. These result can be used as basic data in future studies natural inorganic pigments using hwangto.

The amounts of organic matter present in soil and the rate of soil organic matter (SOM) turnover are influenced by agricultural management practice, such as rotation, tillage, forage plow down direct seeding and manure application. The amount of nutrients released from SOM is highly dependent upon the state of the organic matter. If it contains a large proportion of light fractions (low-density) more nutrients will be available to the glowing crops. However, if it contains mostly heavy fractions (high-density) that are difficult to breakdown, then lesser amounts of nutrients will be available. The state of the SOM and subsequent release of nutrients into the soil can be predicted by NIRS as long as a robust regression equation is developed. The NIRS method is known for its rapidity, convenience, simplicity, accuracy and ability to analyze many constituents at the same time. Our hypothesis is that the NIRS technique allows researchers to investigate fully and in more detail each field for the status of SOM, available moisture and other soil properties in Alberta soils for precision farming in the near future. One hundred thirty one (131) Alberta soils with various levels (low 2-6%, medium 6-10%, and high >10%) of organic matter content and most of dry land soils, including some irrigated soils from Southern Alberta, under various management practices were collected throughout Northern, Central and Southern Alberta. Two depths (0- 15 cm and 15-30 cm) of soils from Northern Alberta were also collected. These air-dried soil samples were ground through 2 mm sieve and scanned using Foss NIR System 6500 with transport module and natural product cell. With particle size above 150 microns only, the “Ludox” method (Meijboom, Hassink and van Noorwijk, Soil Biol. Biochem.27: 1109-1111, 1995) which uses stable silica, was used to fractionate SOM into light, medium and heavy fractions with densities of <1.13, 1.13-1.37 and >1.37 respectively, The SOM fraction with the particle size below 150 microns was discarded because practically, this fraction with very fine particles can't be further separated by wet sieving based on density. Total organic matter content, mechanical texture, ash after 375$^{\circ}C$, and dry matter (DM) were also determined by “standard” soil analysis methods. The NIRS regression equations were developed using Infra-Soft-International (ISI) software, version 3.11.
1. Aiming at supply of basic informations on tree species siting and forest fertilization by understanding of soil properties that are demanded by each tree species through studies of forest soil's morphological, physical and chemical properties in relation to tree growth in our country, the necessary data have been collected in the last 10 years, are quantified according to quantification theory and are analyzed in accordance with multi-variate analysis. 2. Test species, larch and the Korean white pine, are plantable in extensive areas from mid to north in the temperate zone and are the two most recommended reforestation tree species in Korea. However, their respective site demands are not known and they have been in confusion or considered demanding the same site during reforestation. When the Korean white pine is planted in larch sites, it has shown relatively good growth. But, when larch is planted in the Korean white pine site it can be hardly said that the larch growth is good. To understand on such a difference soil factors have been studied so as to see how the soil's morphological, physical and chemical factors affect tree growth helped with the electronic computer. 3. All the stands examined are man-made mature forests. From 294 larch plots and 259 white pine plots dominant trees are cut as samples and through stem analysis site index is determined. For each site index soil profiles are made in the related forest-land for analysis. Soil samples are taken from each profile horizon and forest-land productivity classification tables are worked out through physical and chemical analysis of the soil samples for each tree species for the study of relationships between physical, chemical and the combined physical/chemical properties of soil and tree growth. 4. In the study of relationships between physical properties of soil and tree growth it is found out that larch growth is influenced by the following factors in the order of deposit form, soil depth, soil moisture, altitude, relief, soil type, depth of A-horizon, soil consistency content of organic matter soil texture bed rock gravel content aspect and slope. For the Korean white pine the influencing factors' order is soil type, soil consistency bed rock aspect depth of A-horizon soil moisture altitude relief deposit form soil depth soil texture gravel content and slope. 5. In the study of relationships between chemical properties of soil and tree growth it is found out that larch growth is influenced by the following factors in the order of base saturation organic matter CaO C/N ratio, effective $P_2O_5$ PH.exchangeable $K_2O$ T-N MgO C E C Total Base and Na. For the Korean white pine the influencing factors' order is effective $P_2O_5$ Total Base T-N Na C/N ratio PH CaO base saturation organic matter exchangeable $K_2O$ C E C and MgO. 6. In the study of relationships between the combined physical and chemical properties of soil and tree growth it is found out that larch growth is influenced by the following factors in the order of soil depth deposit form soil moisture PH relief soil type altitude T-N soil consistency effective $P_2O_5$ soil texture depth of A-horizon Total Base exchangeable $K_2O$ and base saturation. For the Korean white pine the influencing factors' order is soil type soil consistency aspect effective $P_2O_5$ depth of A-horizon exchangeable $K_2O$ soil moisture Total Base altitude soil depth base saturation relief T-N C/N ratio and deposit from. 7. In the multiple regression of forest soil's physical properties larch's correlation coefficient is 0.9272 and for the Korean white pine it is 0.8996. With chemical properties larch has 0.7474 and the Korean white pine has 0.7365. So, the soil's physical properties are found out more closely related with tree growth than chemical properties. However, this seems due to inadequate expression of soil's chemical factors and it is proved that the chemical properties are not less important than the physical properties. In the multiple regression of the combined physical and chemical properties consisting of important morphological and physical factors as well as chemical factors of forest soils larch's multiple correlation coefficient is found out to be 0.9434 and for the Korean white pine it is 0.9103 leading to the highest correlation. 8. As shown in the partial correlation coefficients larch needs deeper soil depth than the Korean white pine and in the deposit form colluvial and creeping soils are demanded by the larch. Adequately moist to too moist should be soil moisture and PH should be from 5.5 to 6.1 for the larch. Demands of T-N soil texture and soil nutrients are higher for the larch than the Korean white pine. Thus, soil depth, deposit form, relief soil moisture PH N altitude and soil texture are good indicators for species sitings with larch and the Korean white pine while soil type and soil consistency are indicative only limitedly of species sitings due to their wide variation as plantation environments. For larch siting soil depth deposit form relief soil moisture PH soil type N and soil texture are indicators of good growth and for Korean white pine they are soil type soil consistency effective $P_2O_5$ and exchangeable $K_2O$, which is demanded more by the Korean white pine than larch generally. 9. Physical properties of soil has been known as affecting tree growth to greatest extent so far. However, as a result of this study it is proved through computer analysis that chemical properties of soil are not less important factors for tree growth than chemical properties and site demands for larch and the Korean white pine that have been uncertain So far could be clarified.
Estimations of porosity and bulk density, particle size analysis of soli samples, tracer test and slug test were performed in a petroleum contaminated area of Kangwon for understanding characteristics of the aquifer. Porosities of the samples were estimated 0.158~0.257, and bulk densities were estimated as $1.73\sim2.10\;g/cm^3$. Majority proportion of the soil samples was 0.5~1.0 mm size. In the soil texture triangle, all samples were distributed at sand area. Uniformity coefficients were estimated as 7.71~10.39, and thus all samples were poorly-sorted. In the tracer test, Darcy velocity was estimated to $4.8\times10^{-6}$ cm/day, effective porosity was 0.175, and longitudinal dispersivity was 0.1 m. According to the slug test, hydraulic conductivities of the test wells were estimated as $2.243\times10^{-2}\sim1.634\times10^{-2}$ cm/sec. These hydrogeologic parameters can be used for efficient remediation design of the petroleum contaminated area.
The purpose of this study is to analyze landslide that occurred in Yongin area in 1991 using spatial database. For this, landslide locations are detected from aerial photographs interpretation and field survey. The locations of landslide, topography, soil, forest and geology were constructed to spatial database using Geographic Information System (GIS). To establish occurrence factors of landslide, slope, aspect and curvature of topography were calculated from the topographic database. Texture, material, drainage and effective thickness of soil were extracted from the soil database, and type, age, diameter and density of wood were extracted from the forest database. Lithology was extracted from the geological database, and land use was classified from the TM satellite image. Landslide was analyzed using spatial correlation between the landslide and the landslide occurrence factors by bivariate probability methods. GIS was used to analyze vast data efficiently and statistical programs were used to maintain specialty and accuracy. The result can be used to prevention of hazard, land use planning and construction planning as basic data.
