  • The nonlinear characteristics for the hinge of a deployable missile control fin are investigated experimentally. The nonlinearity is caused by a worn or loose hinge and manufacturing tolerance and cannot be eliminated completely. The structural nonlinearity has an effect on the static and dynamic characteristics of the control fin. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the accurate nonlinear model for the hinge of the control fin. In the present study the existence of nonlinearities in the hinge is confirmed from the frequency response experiments such as tip random excitation and base sine sweep. Using the system identification method, especially, “Force-State Mapping Technique”, the types of nonlinearities are identified and the nonlinear hinge model of the control fin is established.

  • Thin films easily wrinkle under compressive loading due to their small bending stiffness resulting from their tiny thickness. For a thin film deposited on a functionally graded substrate with non-uniform stiffness exponentially changes along the length span in this paper, the uniaxial wrinkling problem is solved analytically in terms of hyper-Bessel functions. For infinite, semi-infinite and finite length systems the wrinkling load and wrinkling wavenumber are determined and compared with those in literature. In comparison with a homogeneous substrate-bounded film in which the wrinkling pattern is uniform along the length span, for a functionally graded substrate-film system the wrinkles accumulate around the softer location of the functionally graded substrate. Therefore, the effective length of the film influenced by the wrinkles decreases, the amplitude of the wrinkles on softer regions of the functionally graded substrate grows and the wrinkling load of the functionally graded substrates with higher softening rate decreases more. The results of the current research are expected to be useful in science and technology of thin films and wrinkling of the structures especially living tissues.

  • A novel approach to modeling concrete behavior at the stage of its maturing is presented in this paper. This approach assumes that at any point in the structure, concrete is composed of a set of layers that are activated in time layer by layer, based on amount of released heat that is produced during process of the concrete's maturing. This allows one to assume that each newly created layer has nominal stiffness moduli and tensile/compressive strengths. Hence introduction of explicit stiffness moduli and tensile/compressive strength dependencies on time, or equivalent time state parameter, is not needed. Analysis of plain concrete (PC) and reinforced concrete (RC) structures, especially massive ones, subjected to any kind of straining in their early stage of existence, mostly due to external loads but especially by thermal loading and shrinkage, is the goal of the approach. In this article a simple elasto-plastic softening model with creep is used for each layer and a general layered model behavior is illustrated on one-dimensional (1D) examples.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the softening effect of cellulase-treated cotton fabric and the damage on the fabric which is accompanied by the treatemnt. Cotton fabric is treated with cellulase under various concentrations and time, and the weight loss, hand values (by KES), surface characteristics, moisture regain, tensile strength, copper number and intrinsic viscosity of the treated samples and untreated samples have been compared. The results are as follows: 1. The weight loss of cotton fabric increased as the concentration of cellulase and the treating time increased. 2. The enzyme treatment had little effect on the stiffness of the treated samples but anti- drape stiffness decreased for the treated samples. Fullness and softness of the treated samples increased and crispness decreased with the lowest level reaching after two hours of the treatment for all concentrations. Scrooping feeling of the treated samples increased and flexibility with soft feeling increased as the treating time and the concentration of cellulase increased. 3. Moisture regain of the samples decreased as the treating time and the concentration of the enzyme increased and the treated fabric showed cracks on the fiber surface, and much surface fibers on the fabric have been removed after the treatment. 4. Tensile strength of the samples decreased as the treating time and as the concentration of cellulase increased, and the copper number increased while the intrinsic viscosity decreased as the treating time increased, but cellulase concentration had a little effect.

  • The paper presents quasi-static plane strain FE-simulations of strain localization in reinforced concrete beams without stirrups. The material was modeled with two different isotropic continuum crack models: an elasto-plastic and a damage one. In case of elasto-plasticity, linear Drucker-Prager criterion with a non-associated flow rule was defined in the compressive regime and a Rankine criterion with an associated flow rule was adopted in the tensile regime. In the case of a damage model, the degradation of the material due to micro-cracking was described with a single scalar damage parameter. To ensure the mesh-independence and to capture size effects, both criteria were enhanced in a softening regime by nonlocal terms. Thus, a characteristic length of micro-structure was included. The effect of a characteristic length, reinforcement ratio, bond-slip stiffness, fracture energy and beam size on strain localization was investigated. The numerical results with reinforced concrete beams were quantitatively compared with corresponding laboratory tests by Walraven (1978).

  • Most silk fabrics are produced only after the degumming process to make the best use of the properties and have restricted silk processing that do not hinder their performance. However, considering the highly increased preference for natural fibers and the shortage of raw silk, high-quality upgraded silk product functions are required by the development of a processing technology and a good design. This study analyzes the changes with the samples by the functional finish such as softening finishing, wash and wear, tannin weighting by measuring the objective hand of scoured silk and three finished ones using KES-FB. As a result, the change of objective hand of finished silk fabrics that improves functionality was analyzed and compared. The increase of KOSHI after the finish became stiffer show that the silk fabric samples are appropriate for summertime clothes with the retention of a certain clothing climate for the body. The stiffness of finished fabrics for the normal had a closer relationship with the density of fabrics than the type of finishing. The samples (after the softening finishes) maintain better elasticity according to the properties of the softener and the finishing agent. Although the specimens of this study were thin fabrics, their elasticity against compression increased after the softening finishes and became softer than degummed silk. The surface properties of georgette were changed by all types of finishing.

  • In the realm of nanotechnology, the nonlocal strain gradient theory takes center stage as it scrutinizes the behavior of spinning cantilever nanobeams and nanotubes, pivotal components supporting various mechanical movements in sport structures. The dynamics of these structures have sparked debates within the scientific community, with some contending that nonlocal cantilever models fail to predict dynamic softening, while others propose that they can indeed exhibit stiffness softening characteristics. To address these disparities, this paper investigates the dynamic response of a nonlocal cantilever cylindrical beam under the influence of external discontinuous dynamic loads. The study employs four distinct models: the Euler-Bernoulli beam model, Timoshenko beam model, higher-order beam model, and a novel higher-order tube model. These models account for the effects of functionally graded materials (FGMs) in the radial tube direction, giving rise to nanotubes with varying properties. The Hamilton principle is employed to formulate the governing differential equations and precise boundary conditions. These equations are subsequently solved using the generalized differential quadrature element technique (GDQEM). This research not only advances our understanding of the dynamic behavior of nanotubes but also reveals the intriguing phenomena of both hardening and softening in the nonlocal parameter within cantilever nanostructures. Moreover, the findings hold promise for practical applications, including drug delivery, where the controlled vibrations of nanotubes can enhance the precision and efficiency of medication transport within the human body. By exploring the multifaceted characteristics of nanotubes, this study not only contributes to the design and manufacturing of rotating nanostructures but also offers insights into their potential role in revolutionizing drug delivery systems.

  • In this paper, a dynamic model for the rotor shaft-coupling-blade system is developed. The blades are attached to a disk and driven by an electric motor shaft which is flexible in torsion. We assumed that the shaft torsional flexibility is lumped in the flexible coupling which is usually adopted in rotor systems. The Lagrangian approach with the small deformation theory for both blade-bending and shaft-torsional deformations is employed for developing the equation of the motion. The assumed modes method is used for estimating the blade transverse deflection. The numerical results highlight the effects of both structural damping of the system and the torsional stiffness of the flexible coupling to the dynamic response of the blade. The results showed strong coupling between the blade bending and shaft torsional vibrations in the form of inertial nonlinearif, stiffness hardening and softening.
