  • In this paper, a single-stage alternating current (AC)-DC converter is proposed for the automated-guided vehicle wireless charging system. The proposed converter is capable of soft-switching under all input voltage (VAC: 220 Vrms ± 10%), load conditions (0-1 kW), and air gap changes (40-60 mm) by phase control at a fixed switching frequency. In addition, controlling a wide output voltage (Vo: 39~54 VDC) is possible by varying the link voltage and improving the input power factor and the total harmonic distortion factor. Experimental results were verified by making a prototype of a 1-kW wireless power charging system that operates with robustness to changes in air gaps.

  • Turbo processing have been known as methods close to Shannon limit in the aspect of wireless multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communications similarly to wireless single antenna communication. The iterative processing can maximize the mutual effect of coding and interference cancellation, but LDPC coding has not been used for turbo processing because of the inherent decoding process delay. This paper suggests a LDPC coded MIMO system with turbo parallel space-time (Turbo-PAST) processing for high-speed wireless communications and proposes a average soft-output syndrome (ASS) check scheme at low signal to noise ratio (SNR) for the Turbo-PAST system to decide the reliability of decoded frame. Simulation results show that the suggested system outperforms conventional system and the proposed ASS scheme effectively reduces the amount of turbo processing iterations without performance degradation from the point of average number of iterations.

  • In this paper, we propose a soft demapping method for 64-ary APSK in the DVB-S3 system. The proposed method in this paper uses the hard decision threshold (HDT) line for each constituent bit in a symbol, and calculates the soft bit information with the distance between the HDT line and the detected symbol. If the HDT lines are defined in a simple manner, the complexity to estimate soft information can be largely reduced compared with the maximum likelihood detection (MLD) which has an exponential complexity. By considering this, we first derive HDT lines for each constituent bit for a 64-APSK symbol, and propose a method to calculate soft bit information. We simulate the BER performance of the proposed scheme by using a turbo codes which requires soft-input-soft-output information, and compare it that of the MLD. The result show that the proposed scheme produces approximating performance to MLD with largely reduced complexity.

  • A method of soft switching in the half bridge converter using a small saturable core is presented. For the soft switching, a small dead time of both switch off is made in a pair of MOSFET switch. The saturable core is of rectangular magnetization characteristics and the core flux swings from the minus to the plus saturation during ON time of the switch. The soft switching is realized in dead time by a resonance between the saturating inductance of the core and the stray capacitance of MOSFET. As an extension of this concept, instead of the saturable core, we propose a new soft switching circuit using a linear inductance and two switches, which is especially suitable for regulating the output and also for high frequency switching. A theoretical principle of soft switching presented here was confirmed by experiments on a half bridge converter of 1.25 KW.

  • The SOVA, which produces the soft decision value, can be used as a sub-optimum solution for concatenated codes such as turbo codes, since it is computationally efficient compared with the optimum MAP algorithm. In this paper, we propose an efficient implementation of the SOVA used for decoding turbo codes, by reducing the number of calculations for soft decision values and trace-back operations. In order to utilize the memory efficiently, the whole block of turbo codes is divided into several sub-blocks in the proposed algorithm. It is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm requires less computation than the conventional algorithm, while providing the same overall performance.

  • Self-spreading (SSP) is a spread spectrum technique where the spreading sequence is generated from data bits. Although SSP allows communications with low probability of interception by unintended receivers, despreading by the intended receiver is prone to error propagation. In this paper, we propose both a new transmitter and a new receiver based on SSP with the aim to a) reduce error propagation and b) increase the concealment of the transmission. We first describe a new technique for the generation of SSP spreading sequence, which generalizes SSPs of existing literature. We include also coding at the transmitter, in order to further reduce the effects of error propagation at the receiver. For the receiver, we propose a turbo architecture based on the exchange of information between a soft despreader and a soft-input soft-output decoder. We design the despreader in order to fully exploit the information provided by the decoder. Lastly, we propose a chip decoder that extracts the information on data bits contained in the spreading sequence from the received signal. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated and compared with existing spread-spectrum systems.

  • This paper focuses on a systematical and in-depth analysis of the reactive power and soft-switching regions of Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converters with dual-phase-shift (DPS) control to achieve high efficiency in a wide operating range. The key features of the DPS operating modes are characterized and verified by analytical calculation and experimental tests. The mathematical expressions of the reactive power are derived and the reductions of the reactive power are illustrated with respect to a wide range of output power and voltage conversion ratios. The ZVS soft-switching boundary of the DPS is presented and one more leg with ZVS capability is achieved compared with the CPS control. With the selection of the optimal operating mode, the optimal phase-shift pair is determined by performance indices, which include the minimum peak or rms inductor current. All of the theoretical analysis and optimizations are verified by experimental tests. The experimental results with the DPS demonstrate the efficiency improvement for different load conditions and voltage conversion ratios.

  • In order to minimize switching losses for high power applications, a boost PFC rectifier with a novel passive lossless snubber circuit is proposed. The proposed lossless snubber is composed of coupled inductors merged into a boost inductor. This method compared with conventional methods does not need additional inductor cores and it reduces extra costs to implement a soft switching circuit. Especially, the proposed circuit can reduce the reverse recovery current of output diode rectifiers due to the coupling effect of the inductor. During turn-on and turn-off operating modes, the proposed PFC converter operates under soft switching conditions with high power conversion efficiency. In addition, the performance improvement and analysis of the operating effects of the coupled inductors were also presented and verified with a 3.3 kW prototype rectifier.

  • Recently, the Green IT is noticed because of the effects of greenhouse gas emissions, a drain on natural resources and pollution. In this paper, Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems with Turbo Coded scheme using LED is proposed and simulated in an optical wireless channel. As a forward error correction scheme to reduce information losses, turbo coding was employed. To decode the codewords, The Map (Maximum a Posteriori) algorism and SOVA (Soft Output Viterbi Algorithm) is used. The above mentioned schemes are described and simulation results are analyzed. As using turbo codes scheme, BER performance of proposed VLC systems is improved about 5 [dB].

  • In this paper we have designed a two-stage Class I power amplifier operated at 2.4CHz for Class-1 Bluetooth application. The power amplifier employs class-I topology to exploit its soft-switching property for high efficiency. The latch-structured pre-amplifier with amplifiers makes its output signal as sharp as possible for soft switching of the next power amplifier. It improves the overall efficiency of the proposed power amplifier. It shows 65.8$\%$ PAE, 20dB power gain and 20dBm output power.
