Synthesis of Cobalt-Iron Prussian Blue Analogues Nanotubes by CTAB Soft-Template Method

  • Three cobalt-iron Prussian Blue Analogues (PBAs) nanotubes contained with different alkali metal cations of K, Rb or Cs, respectively, were prepared by using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)/ethanol-water micelles as soft templates. The products were characterized by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron micrograph (SEM), which confirmed the composition of the substances and their unique nanotube structures. Furthermore, the formation mechanism of the PBAs nanotubes was discussed and provided useful insight for further synthesis of nanotubes of other Prussian blue analogues.

Soft X-ray Nano-spectroscopy for Electronic Structures of Transition Metal Oxide Nano-structures

  • In order to develop nano-devices with much lower power consumption for beyond-CMOS applications, the fundamental understanding and precise control of the electronic properties of ultrathin transition metal oxide (TMO) films are strongly required. The metal-insulator transition (MIT) is not only an important issue in solid state physics, but also a useful phenomenon for device applications like switching or memory devices. For potential use in such application, the electronic structures of MIT, observed for TMO nano-structures, have been investigated using a synchrotron radiation angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy system combined with a laser molecular beam epitaxy chamber and a scanning photoelectron microscopy system with 70 nm spatial resolution. In this review article, electronic structures revealed by soft X-ray nano-spectroscopy are presented for i) polarity-dependent MIT and thickness-dependent MIT of TMO ultrathin films of $LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3$ and $SrVO_3/SrTiO_3$, respectively, and ii) electric field-induced MIT of TMO nano-structures showing resistance switching behaviors due to interfacial redox reactions and/or filamentary path formation. These electronic structures have been successfully correlated with the electrical properties of nano-structured films and nano-devices.

Understanding spin configuration in the geometrically frustrated magnet TbB4: A resonant soft X-ray scattering study

  • The frustrated magnet has been regarded as a system that could be a promising host material for the quantum spin liquid (QSL). However, it is difficult to determine the spin configuration and the corresponding mechanism in this system, because of its geometrical frustration (i.e., crystal structure and symmetry). Herein, we systematically investigate one of the geometrically frustrated magnets, the $TbB_4$ compound. Using resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS), we explored its spin configuration, as well as Tb's quadrupole. Comprehensive evaluations of the temperature and photon energy/polarization dependences of the RSXS signals reveal the mechanism of spin reorientation upon cooling down, which is the sophisticated interplay between the Tb spin and the crystal symmetry rather than its orbit (quadrupole). Our results and their implications would further shed a light on the search for possible realization of QSL.

Absorption Spectroscopy of Biological Specimens Near X-ray Absorption Edges of Constituent Elements

  • Absorption spectra of biological specimens in the soft X-ray region have been presented with special reference to the XANES (X-ray absorption Near Edge Structure) of constituent elements. Absorption spectrum in this wavelength region is characterized by the absorption edges from which elemental content could be derived. In addition, XANES has a characteristic profile for chemical environment around the element such as chemical bond. Using the specific absorption peak we can assign not only the chemical bond but also molecules having such a chemical bond. In the present paper, absorption spectrum of DNA was measured in the wavelength range from 1.5nm to 5nm. Spectrum of Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells was compared with the DNA spectrum. XANES were distinct at the K absorption edges of major elements, C, N and O. In the spectrum of the cells prominent peaks at the L absorption edge of minor element Ca were also detectable. XANES profiles in small local areas in a cell could also be measured in combination with X-ray microscopy. These give information about local chemical environment in a cell. XANES at the phosphorus K absorption edge in a human HeLa cell was successfully obtained corresponding to a sharp and intensive XANES peak of DNA.

RESULTS FROM THE YOHKOH SATELLITE

  • The .Japanese sun observing satellite, Yohkoh, has been operational for five years and her scientific instruments are still in good condition. They have revealed ample of evidences that solar flares were triggered by magnetic reconnection, which was, for the first time, clearly indicated to take place in the solar corona. Cusp structures in soft X-rays and a new type of hard X-ray sources at the top of flaring loops have strongly supported the scenario originally proposed by C-S-H-KP. Nonthermal energy input in hard X-rays and thermal energy estimated from soft X-rays are fundamentally consistent with the interpretation of thick-target and chromospheric-evaporation models (Neupert effect). X-ray jets, another discovery of Yohkoh, were also associated with magnetic reconnection, as a result of the interaction of emerging fluxes with pre-existing coronal loops. Temperature structures of active regions, quiet sun, and coronal holes had very dynamic differential-emission-measure (DEM) distributions and high-temperature tails of DEM were considered to come from the contribution of flare-like activity.

컨벌루션 함수를 이용한 자동두께측정 영상의 성능분석 (Performance Analysis of Automatic Thickness Image using Convolution Function)

  • 본 논문에서는 LCD TV용 필름의 균일성을 개선하고자, 소프트 엑스레이(soft X-ray)를 이용하여 볼트 연결기법과 컨벌루션(convolution) 함수기반의 영상처리를 결합한다. 필름의 프로파일에서 두께를 측정하는 라인 스캔과정에서 선원 변경 시 오프셋 오류가 발생한다. 이러한 선원의 오프셋 오류를 제거하고자, 인접한 3개 볼트의 영상에 대해 컨벌루션 함수를 적용함으로써 자동으로 두께 측정이 가능하고, 영상분석 성능을 향상한다.

4세대 방사광: 엑스선 자유전자레이저 (4th Generation Light Source: X-ray Free Electron Laser)

  • An X-ray Free Electron laser facility (PAL-XFEL) has been built in Pohang Accelerator Laboratory to provide X-ray FEL radiations for photon users. The machine consists of a 10 GeV normalconducting S-band linear accelerator and two undulator beamlines. The hard and soft X-ray beamlines will provide FEL radiations with wavelengths of 0.6 to 0.1 nm and 4.5 to 1 nm, respectively. Beam commissioning of PAL-XFEL is ongoing and user service will start in 2017. In this report, the PAL-XFEL layout and the working principle are discussed.

철원소를 함유한 분자기반 생체물질 나노입자들의 연 x선 방사광 분광 연구 (Soft x-ray Synchrotron Radiation Spectroscopy Study of Molecule-based Nano Bioparticles Containing Fe)

  • 이 연구에서는 헬리코박터 파이로리 페리틴, 헴, $NaM[Fe(CN)_6]{\cdot}H_2O$ 프러시안 블루(M=Co, Ni) 등의 분자기반 생체물질 나노입자들의 전자 구조를 연구하기 위하여 방사광을 광원으로 사용한 연 x선 광흡수 분광(soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy: XAS)과 연 x선 자기 원편광 이색성(soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism: XMCD) 분광법 실험을 수행하였다. 이 연구로부터 페리틴 나노 입자들을 구성하고 있는 Fe 이온들은 모두 거의 3가 ($Fe^{3+}$)의 원자가 상태에 있으며, 프러시안 블루 나노 입자들 내의 Fe 이온들은 $Fe^{2+}-Fe^{3+}$의 혼합원자가 상태에 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 페리틴 내의 $Fe^{3+}$ 이온들은 한 종류의 대칭성을 가진 국소 구조를 가지며, Fe 이온들의 자기모멘트는 모두 한 방향으로 정렬되어 있다는 사실을 발견하였다. 그리고 프러시안 블루 나노 입자들의 Fe 이온의 국소적 결합은 주로 $(CN)^-$ 리건드와의 결합에 의하여 결정된다는 것을 분광학적으로 알 수 있었다.

연(軟) X-선(線) 사진(寫眞)에 의(依)한 잣나무 종자(種子)의 품질진단(品質診斷) (Diagnosis of Seed Quality for Korean White Pine by Soft X-Ray Photographs)

  • 연(軟) X-선(線) 사진(寫眞)에 의(依)하여 잣나무 종자(種子)의 품질(品質)과 전발아현상(前發芽現象)을 조사(調査)하고 이상배(異常胚)를 분류(分類)하였으며 종자성숙과정(種子成熟過程)의 유배성장(幼胚成長) 등(等) 종자내부조직(種子內部組織)의 변화(變化)를 관찰(觀察)한 결과(結果) 다음과 같은 결론(結論)을 얻었다. 1. X-선(線) 사진(寫眞)의 촬영변수(撮影變數)는 촬영거리(撮影距離) 42cm, 초점(焦點) M 일때 전압(電壓) 19.5 K.V.P., 8mA에서 기건종자(氣乾種子)(함수율(含水率) 6.3%)는 조사시간(照射時間) 30초(秒), 습층처리종자(濕層處理種子)(함수율(含水率) 24.0~36.0%) 60초(秒), 그리고 함수율(含水率) 41.0~64.0%인 미숙종자(未熟種子)는 90초(秒)에서 배영상(胚映像)을 선명(鮮明)하게 관찰(觀察)할 수 있었든 것으로 보아 종자함수율(種子含水率)이 증가(增加)됨에 따라 X-선(線)의 조사시간(照射時間)이 연장(延長)되었다. 2. 잣나무의 유배성장과정(幼胚成熟過程)을 조사(調査)한바 6월하순(月下旬) 이후(以後)부터 배(胚)의 영상(映像)이 선명(鮮明)하게 나타났으며 종자성숙기(種子成熟期) 9월(月) 상순(上旬)의 배장비(胚長比)가 65%에 달(達)한 것을 관찰(觀察)할 수 있는 것으로 미루어 연(軟) X-선(線) 사진(寫眞)은 종자내부(種子內部)의 형태변화(形態變化)를 연구(硏究)하는데도 효과적(効果的)인 방법(方法)이었다. 3. 배유(胚乳) 및 배(胚)의 X-선사진(線寫眞) 영상(映像)이 선명(鮮明)한 종자(種子)가 69.7%에 달(達)하였으며 이들의 실제발아율(實際發芽率)은 75.2%로서 이들사이의 오차(誤差)는 6%에 불과(不過)한 것으로 보아 X-선사진(線寫眞)은 최단시간내(最短時間內)에 비교적(比較的) 정확(正確)히 발아력(發芽力)을 판단(判斷)할 수 있는 좋은 방법(方法)이었다. 4. 전발아현상(前發芽現象)을 선명(鮮明)하게 관찰(觀察)할 수 있었든 것으로 발아생리연구(發芽生理硏究)에도 연(軟) X-선(線)을 활용(活用)할 수 있었다. 5. 이상배(異常胚)를 조사(調査)한 바 총출현율(總出現率)은 4.4%로서 20개형(個型)으로 분류(分類)할 수 있었으며 그 중(中) 단배형(單胚型)이 8종(種)으로 2.0%, 이배형(二胚型)이 6종(種)으로 1.8%, 삼배형(三胚型) 5종(種)으로 0.5%가 출현(出現)되었고 역위형(逆位型)은 0.12%로서 이들 이상배(異常胚)는 잣나무의 육종연구(育種硏究)에 활용(活用)할 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.
