The conventional single-core PBDs have been widely used in order to accelerate consolidation settlement of soft grounds. When using the single-core PBD in a thick clay deposit, a delay of consolidation may occur due to high confining pressure in the thick deposit and necking of drains. This study is to compare the performances of soil improvement by the single-core and double-core PBD installed at a site in Busan New Port which exhibits approximately a 40m-thick clay layer. An in-situ test program was performed at the test site where a set of the double-core PBDs and single-core PBDs were installed to compare the efficiency of each drain. In addition, the discharge capacity of each PBD has been measured using the modified Delft Test. A series of laboratory tests for estimating in-situ soil properties have also been performed in order to obtain input parameters for a numerical program ILLICON. The discharge capacity of the double-core PBD is higher than that of the single-core PBD in the modified Delft Test. However it is observed from the comparative in-situ test and numerical analysis that there is no difference in the performance of ground improvement between the two drain systems. This discrepancy comes from the fact that the amount of water released during consolidation in most common field conditions is much smaller than the capacity of even the single core PBD. And thus, considering actual field conditions, it can be concluded that the single-core PBD has enough discharge capacity even in the thick clay deposit such as this test site.
Transient/time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) soundings were carried out on reclaimed land, since the TEM sounding has good resolution of a conductive and thin overburden. The reclamation material is marine clay dredged from the seafloor, which is currently undergoing consolidation in the upper part of the dredged layer. The conductivity of the marine-origin clay is generally more than 0.3 S/m. The aim of the TEM sounding was to determine the depths of weathered and soft rocks overlain by thick and conductive overburden. The TEM responses were measured at delay times of 0.050-20.575 ms with a $30{\times}30$ m coincident loop array. Data from the TEM inversion and core logging indicate that the resistivities of the conductive overburden are less than 2 ${\Omega}$-m, while those of the weathered and soft rocks are 10-20 and 70 ${\Omega}$-m, respectively. The depth to weathered rock is 26-58 m and the depth to soft rock is 46-75 m.
If roads, bridges, buildings, etc. are built on the ground with soft clay or organic soil, there may be a lot of problems in geotechnical engineering such as settlement and stability due to the large settlement and lack of bearing capacity. In extreme cases, it may appear due to shear failure or collapse of the constructed structure, so a ground improvement method is indispensable to increase the strength of the ground and to suppress settlement. In this study, the settlement according to each groundwater level condition was analyzed using the measurement results for the groundwater level conditions, one of the important factors in predicting the settlement in dredged and reclaimed ground, and the groundwater level conditions applied to the settlement analysis were proposed by comparing it with settlement generated 5 years after construction. As a result of the analysis, it is judged that it is reasonable to apply the measured groundwater level during construction and the low water ordinary neap tide (L.W.O.N.T) during load application for the groundwater level in the settlement analysis. In addition, in the case of the dredged and reclaimed ground, it is estimated that the water pressure acting on the clay layer is nonlinear, as the result of the observations of the head of water at the observation points above and below the in-situ clay layer were different.
Tendon reinforced cemented soil is applied extensively in foundation stabilisation and improvement, especially in areas with soft clay. To solve the deterioration problem led by steel corrosion, the glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) tendon is introduced to substitute the traditional steel tendon. The interface bond strength between the cemented soil matrix and GFRP tendon demonstrates the outstanding mechanical property of this composite. However, the lack of research between the influence factors and bond strength hinders the application. To evaluate these factors, back propagation neural network (BPNN) is applied to predict the relationship between them and bond strength. Since adjusting BPNN parameters is time-consuming and laborious, the particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm is proposed. This study evaluated the influence of water content, cement content, curing time, and slip distance on the bond performance of GFRP tendon-reinforced cemented soils (GTRCS). The results showed that the ultimate and residual bond strengths were both in positive proportion to cement content and negative to water content. The sample cured for 28 days with 30% water content and 50% cement content had the largest ultimate strength (3879.40 kPa). The PSO-BPNN model was tuned with 3 neurons in the input layer, 10 in the hidden layer, and 1 in the output layer. It showed outstanding performance on a large database comprising 405 testing results. Its higher correlation coefficient (0.908) and lower root-mean-square error (239.11 kPa) were obtained compared to multiple linear regression (MLR) and logistic regression (LR). In addition, a sensitivity analysis was applied to acquire the ranking of the input variables. The results illustrated that the cement content performed the strongest influence on bond strength, followed by the water content and slip displacement.
Most laboratory test research has focused on grouting efficiency in homogeneous reconstituted soft clay. However, the natural sedimentary soils generally behave differently from reconstituted soils due to the effect of soil structure. A series of laboratory grouting tests were conducted to research the effect of soil structure on the performance of compensation grouting. The effects of grouting volume, overlying load and grouting location on the performance of compensation grouting under different soil structures were also studied. Reconstituted soil was altered with added cement to simulate artificial structured soil. The results showed that the final grouting efficiency was positive and significantly increased with the increase of stress ratio within a certain range when grouting in normally consolidated structured clay. However, in the same low yield stress situation, the artificial structured soil had a lower final grouting efficiency than the overconsolidated reconstituted soil. The larger of normalized grouting volume could increase the final grouting efficiency for both reconstituted and artificial structured soils. Whereas, the effect of the overlying load on final grouting efficiencies was unfavourable, and was independent of the stress ratio. As for the layered soil specimens, grouting in the artificial structured soil layer was the most efficient. In addition, the peak grouting pressure was affected by the stress ratio and the overlying load, and it could be predicted with an empirical equation when the overlying load was less than the yield stress. The end time of primary consolidation and the proportion of secondary consolidation settlement varied with the different soil structures, grouting volumes, overlying loads and grouting locations.
A pilot scale filed model test and 2-D numerical analysis was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of constructing a geogrid-reinforced and pile-supported embankment system over soft ground to reduce differential settlement, and the results are presented hearin. Three-by-three pile groups with varying the space between pile were driven into a layer of soft marine clay and a layer of geogrid was used as reinforcement over each pile group. 2-D numerical analysis has been conducted by using the FLAC-2D(Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua) program for same condition of field model test. The settlement, vertical stress, and strain of geogrid due to the construction of embankment were measured at various locations. Based on the field model test and numerical analysis results, pile reinforcement generated the soil arching at the midspan of pile cap and the geogrid reinforcement helps reduce the differential settlement of the soft ground by tensile strength of geogrid. Also for $D/b{\geq}6.0$, the effectiveness of geogrid reinforcement in reducing settlement is negligible.
Material functions about effective stress, permeability, coefficient of consolidation and coefficient of volume change has important role to predict consolidation velocity and settlement of soft ground. Modified oedometer for radial drainage is adapted to find out material functions on laboratory tests. Undisturbed sample for laboratory tests were taken from construction sites of industrial complexes on southern coastal area which consists of upper dredged fill and lower original clay layer. For different drainage condition in consolidation process void ratio, effective stress, permeability, coefficient of consolidation and coefficient of volume change has been assessed with results of existing standard oedometer tests. It is worthwhile to note that consolidation material functions could be expressed as regression equation by Stark (2005), heterogeneity for permeability could be assessed from these relationships.
Polychaetous community survey in Tomioka Bay was carried out 5 times seasonally from May 1991 to March 1992 by quantitative grab sampling (0.05m2) at 11 stations. Based on the granulometric composition and environmental factors, a homogeneous soft bottom was found in St.5-10. The species of the polychaete were classified into three feeding groups using the Fauchald and Jumars' feeding guild system. According to polychaetous community composition data, deposit feeders predominate in sandy silt area where the silt-clay content is $60-69.3\%.$ These deposit feeders were subdivided into surface deposit feeders and subsurface deposit feeders by their living position and mode. Also, suspension feeding group comes as the third dominant group. Seasonal changes of each feeding group were described in terms of numerical density and biomass. Feeding layer and types of dominant species (Lumbrineris longifolia: surface deposit feeder; Praxillella pacifica: subsurface deposit feeder; Chone duneri; suspension filter feeder, etc.) were examined in the intact sediment core samples. Also, longterm density change among the three dominant species during 10 years was disussed.

This study introduces a reinforcement work case using Twin-Jet Method. The area is located behind the abutment of the bridges built on soft clay along the $\bigcirc\bigcirc$ Express Highway. Its foundation was constructed by installing EPS blocks on the original ground to reduce the embankment load under the highway. However, the ground deformation has continuously occurred due to the settlement of the foundation soft cohesive soils. The amounts of subsidences at the surface turned out to be 20~30.0mm, After the pavement patch work on April 23, 2009, a drastic subsidence occurred together with 10mm swell, For this reason, Twin-Jet grout column construction was applied by passing through the EPS banking blocks without closing traffic flows on the express highway. The outcomes of core sample tests after reinforcing the ground turned out to be TCR 92.5%, RQD 64.6% and unconfined compressive strength 2.3~8.6Mpa. The test results showed that the condition of the ground foundation had improved using Twin-Jet grouting in most layers of ground including the cobble and gravel layer.

The ground work with of the research is constructed by a SCP method to improve clay ground in the sedimentary layer and sand ground in the reclamation layer at the same time as a reclaimed soft ground by reclaiming deep depth. Improved fine-grained soils in the sand ground decrease the ground improvement effect and have an influence on replacement ratio of SCP method. Fine-Grained soils which advances in sand ground reduces a from improvement effect, Makes affect in replacement ratio of SCP method. In this study, consideration about replacement ratio of sand ground, Tried to observe affects in replacement ratio of fine-grained soils SCP method of dredging reclamation ground. The result, replacement ratio which follows in the Japan Geotechnical Society experience-chart(1988) recording where fine-grained soils content will increase feebly, was visible the aspect which increases progressively, replacement ratio in compliance with Gibbs and Holts(1973) methods according to fine-grained soils increase is visible the tendency which decreases gradually with the enemy. Specially, according to case fine-grained content of Mizuno(1987) methods increases, replacement ratio suddenly was showing the trend which rises from of 50% and according to fine-grained soils increase was overestimated.
