PURPOSE. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of aging on the tear strength and cytotoxicity of four soft denture lining materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Four commonly used soft denture lining materials, (Coe-Comfort$^{TM}$ GC America Inc., Alsip, IL, USA; Coe-SOFT$^{TM}$ GC America Inc., Alsip, IL, USA; Visco-gel Dentsply Caulk Milford, DE, USA; and Sofreliner Tough M Tokuyama Dental Corporation Tokyo, Japan) were selected. Sixty trouser-leg designed specimens per lining material were fabricated using a stainless steel mold for tear strength testing. The specimens were divided into non-thermocycling and 1000-, and 3000-thermocycling groups. For the cytotoxicity test, twenty-four disk shaped specimens per material were fabricated using a stainless steel mold. The specimens were soaked in normal saline solution for 24 h, 48 h and 72 h. Cytotoxicity was measured by XTT assay in L929 mouse fibroblasts. Data were analyzed by two way analysis of variance and Dunnett's test (P<.05). RESULTS. Before thermocycling, Sofreliner Tough M ($10.36{\pm}1.00N$) had the highest tear strength value while Coe-Comfort$^{TM}$ ($0.46{\pm}0.10N$) had the lowest. After 3000 cycles, Sofreliner Tough M ($9.65{\pm}1.66N$) presented the highest value and Coe-Comfort$^{TM}$ ($0.42{\pm}0.08N$) the lowest. Sofreliner Tough M, in all incubation periods was the least toxic with significant differences compared to all other materials (P<.05). Coe-Comfort$^{TM}$, Coe-$SOFT^{TM}$, and Sofreliner Tough M did not show any significant differences within their material group for all incubation periods. CONCLUSION. This in vitro study revealed that aging can affect both the tear strength and cytotoxicity of soft denture materials depending on the composition.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the visual performance by contrast sensitivity (CS) and disability glare (DG) in low astigmatic eyes corrected with toric soft lenses and other optical corrections. Methods: Twenty university students with myopia (-1.00 to -6.50D Sph. with astigmatism up to 1.50 cyl) were enrolled and corrected by five different methods: 1) soft toric lenses; 2) spherical soft contact lenses; 3) RGP lenses; 4) best spectacle corrected visual acuity; 5) spherical equivalent spectacles. All subjects had corrected vision acuity of 20/20 or better. Contrast sensitivity and disability glare were measured using the OPTEC 6500 contrast sensitivity view-in tester included the EyeView Functional Vision Analysis software at photopic or mesopic conditions with glare. Results: At photopic condition, best corrected spectacle wearers had the highest monocular contrast sensitivity at all spatial frequency followed by soft toric lenses, RGP lenses, spherical equivalent spectacles, and spherical soft contact lenses. However, all of them were in normal contrast sensitivity value at photopic condition. At mesopic condition with glare, toric soft lenses were the highest and followed by RGP lenses, spherical equivalent spectacles, best spectacle corrected visual acuity and spherical soft contact lenses. It was observed that spherical soft contact lens wearers demonstrated lower range than normal contrast sensitivity value at mesopic condition with glare. Conclusion: Toric soft lenses gave better visual performance than spherical soft lenses in low astigmatic eyes. Subjects requiring the use of contact lenses under mesophic conditions could benefit from toric soft lenses.
Purpose: A retrospective review of the radiographs of the proximal metatarsal osteotomy and distal soft tissue procedure for hallux valgus, evaluating the correction of the tibial sesamoid, was undertaken. We evaluated the correlation between the reduction of the tibial sesamoid and the clinical outcomes. Materials and Methods: 17 patients (23 cases) with moderate to severe hallux valgus deformity underwent the proximal metatarsal osteotomy and distal soft tissue procedure. The preoperative and last follow-up radiographs were reviewed according to the tibial sesamoid grade classification recommended by the Research Committee of the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS). We divided them into two groups according to the reduction of the tibial sesamoid. We anaylyzed the clinical outcomes in each group according to Mayo Clinic Forefoot Scoring System (FFSS). Results: In all of the patients, the preoperative tibial sesamoid position were grade 2 or greater. At the last follow-up, 52% (n=12) were grade 1 or less (Group I) and 48% (n=11) were grade 2 or greater (Group II). In group I, the forefoot score was improved from preoperative mean value of 32.0 points to final follow-up value of 66.3 points. In group II, the forefoot score was improved from preoperative mean value of 31.7 points to final follow-up value of 65.9 points. There was no statistical significance between postoperative, average scores in group I and II (p>0.05). Conclusion: The position of the tibial sesamoid was corrected insufficiently in almost half of all cases. In view of clinical outcomes, there was no significant difference between the corrected group and the other group.
In view of the effects of the hardness of material on fatigue, rolling contact fatigue process in hard metals seems to differ from it in soft metals. This paper has been aimed to compare the rolling contact fatigue process according to the hardness of materials. Rolling contact fatigue tests using the ball bearings assembled with the inner race of four different hardness have been carried out. In addition, residual stress and half-value breadth on/below the inner raceway during individual rolling contact fatigue have been measured by X-ray diffraction. The results of this study showed that the change of residual stress and half-value breadth during the rolling contact fatigue on race way in hard metals is the same as in soft metals. However, plastic deformation by rolling contact in hard metals is in microscopic scale but only for soft metals in macroscopic scale.

Soft magnetic iron powders have been coated with polyester or phenol resin. And the coated powder (soft magnetic composite) have been pressed into ring type core over the pressure of 870 MPa. Green density, magnetic flux density, permeability, core loss of the samples were measured to look at the effect of the coating materials and the amount of them. Green density is increased with the amount of coating materials and shows the maximum value, 6.5 $g/cm^3$ at 5 w/o, but decreased over it. And lowest value of the core loss is showed for the 5 w/o coated samples.

The excavation site in the new city of inchon songdo is distributed with soft reclaimed soil and marine deposit. So, the general ground anchor is not applied to this layer of soft ground as the earth retaining support system, because of settlement. And then, Jacket pack anchor which is newly developed in order to increasing the pullout resistance by certain grout bulb formation and expansion effect in soft ground is applied to this site instead of the general ground anchor. Though the maximum horizontal displacement shows about 30mm~100mm (The maximum horizontal displacement/excavation depth$\fallingdotseq$0.32~1.0%) according to excavation sequence, generally excavation work finished stably. Also, load cell after setting shows almost increasing trend with increasing horizontal displacement. It means that the settlement of Jacket pack anchor in soft ground is good. From the result of this case, we knew that Jacket pack anchor was able to use the earth retaining support system in soft ground. Using Jacket pack anchor in soft ground, The allowance of the horizontal displacement is applied more than general value considering soil factors.

Consolidation settlements on soft clay are often large and potentially damaging to structures. Currently, large-scale projects are in progress in Korea. These structures will be constructed on both thick and soft clay layers, and so the accurate evaluation of magnitude of settlement is required at every step in design and construction. Especially, secondary compression play an important role in consolidation settlements on soft clay. Generally, the magnitudes of secondary compression are evaluated by laboratory and in-situ consolidation tests or by empirical $C_{a/}$$C_{c}$ relationships. The empirical $C_{a/}$$C_{c}$ may not be only economical, but a fast and powerful tool in estimating secondary consolidation settlement. However, databases of the $C_{a/}$$C_{c}$ relationship for sites in Korea are currently insufficient. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship of $C_{a/}$$C_{c}$, on marine clay near the southern sea in Korea. In this study a series of incremental loading consolidation tests (measuring base pore water pressure) are performed. It was found that the $C_{a/}$$C_{c}$ on undisturbed marine clay equaled 0.0397. This value is similar to the value proposed by Mesri and Castro(1987) for inorganic clay and silt. and silt. and silt.
This study was carried out for the optimum predegumming in the protease degumming process of silk fabrics by ocmparing the physical properties of silk fabrics degummed with different weight losses of predegumming. 1. In twill habutai, the stiffness of fabric was reduced and the smoothness was improved with increasing weight loss of predegmming, however, the soft feeling value which means the total handle value of medium fabric for lady, was maximum at 20% of predegumming weight loss. 2. In the case of crepe de chine representing thin fabric for lady, the anti-drape stiffness was relatively increased with 22% weight loss of predegumming. However, the other physical properties, such as the flexibility with soft feeling were less related to the degrees of predegumming.
This paper investigates the development of failure surfaces induced by an embankment on soft marine clay deposits and the characteristics of such surfaces through numerical simulations and its comparative study with monitoring results. It is well known that the factor of safety of embankment slopes is closely related to the vertical loading, including the height of the embankment. That is, an increase in the embankment height reduces the factor of safety. However, few studies have examined the relationship between the lateral movement of soft soil beneath the embankment and the factor of safety. In addition, no study has investigated the distribution of the pore pressure coefficient B value along the failure surface. This paper conducts a continuum analysis using finite difference methods to characterize the development of failure surfaces during embankment construction on soft marine clay deposits. The results of the continuum analysis for failure surfaces, stress, displacement, and the factor of safety can be used for the management of embankment construction. In failure mechanism, it has been validated that a large shear displacement causes change of stress and pore pressure along the failure surface. In addition, the pore pressure coefficient B value decreases along the failure surface as the embankment height increases. This means that the rate of change in stress is higher than that in pore pressure.
This study was carried out to compare the handle of silk fabrics degummed with Alkalase, Protease produced by bacteria, with of silkfabrics degummed with the soap-soda. 1. In twill habutae, the stiffiness of silk fabric degummed with Alkalase was lower than that of silkfabirc degummed with soap-soda. The soft feeling value which is meaning the total Mandle value of medium fabirc for lady, as well as the Smothness, were more improved in enzymatic degumming than in the soap-soda degumming. 2. In case of Crep De Chine representing thin fabric for lady, the stiffness and Anti-Drape stiffness of the fabric degummed with Alkalase were lower than those of fabric degummed with the soap-soda, but the fullness and the Flexibilit with smooth feeling which is meaning the Total Handle value were higher.
