Purpose: Numerous indices have been proposed to analyse wound healing in oral soft tissues, but each has specific shortcomings. A new method of analysis, the Early Wound Healing Score (EHS), was evaluated in the present study. The aim was to assess more accurately early healing by primary intention of surgical incisions in periodontal soft tissues. Methods: Twenty-one patients were treated with different surgical procedures comprising 1 or 2 vertical releasing incisions as part of a surgical access flap. Twenty-four hours after surgery, early wound healing at the vertical releasing incisions was assessed using the EHS. This score assessed clinical signs of re-epithelialization (CSR), clinical signs of haemostasis (CSH), and clinical signs of inflammation (CSI). Since complete wound epithelialization was the main outcome, the CSR score was weighted to be 60% of the total final score. Accordingly, a score of 0, 3, or 6 points was possible for the assessment of CSR, whereas scores of 0, 1, or 2 points were possible for CSH and CSI. Higher values indicated better healing. Accordingly, the score for ideal early wound healing was 10. Results: Thirty vertical releasing incisions were assessed in 21 patients. At 24 hours after incision, 16 vertical releasing incisions (53.33%) received the maximum score of CSR, while 6 cases (20%) received an EHS of 10. None of the cases received 0 points. Conclusion: The EHS system may be a useful tool for assessing early wound healing in periodontal soft tissue by primary intention after surgery.
A time-dependent large deformation fracture theory is developed for application to soft biological tissues. The theory uses the quasilinear viscoelastic theory of Fung, and particularizes it to constitutive assumptions on polyvinyl-chloride (PVC) (Part I) and cartilage (Part II). This constitutive theory is used in a general viscoelastic theory by Christensen and Naghdi and an energy balance to develop an expression for the fracture toughness of the materials. Experimental methods are developed for measuring the required constitutive parameters and fracture data for the materials. Elastic stress and reduced relaxation functions were determined using tensile and shear tests at high loading rates with rise times of 25-30 msec, and test times of 150 sec. The developed method was validated, using an engineering material, PVC to separate the error in the testing method from the inherent variation of the biological tissues. It was found that the the proposed constitutive modeling can predict the nonlinear stress-strain and the time-dependent behavior of the material. As an approximation method, a pseudo-elastic theory using the J-integral concept, assuming that the material is a time-independent large deformation elastic material, was also developed and compared with the time-dependent fracture theory. For PVC. the predicted fracture toughness is $1.2{\pm}0.41$ and $1.5{\pm}0.23\;kN/m$ for the time-dependent theory and the pseudo-elastic theory, respectively. The methods should be of value in quantifying fracture properties of soft biological tissues. In Part II, an application of the developed method to a biological soft tissue was made by using bovine humeral articular cartilage.
When performing a tooth extraction, imminent collapse of the tissue by resorption and remodeling of the socket is a natural occurrence. The procedure for the preservation of the alveolar ridge has been widely described in the dental literatures and aims to maintain hard and soft tissues in the extraction site for optimal rehabilitation either with conventional fixed or removable prosthetics or implant-supported prosthesis.
Facial balance is the primary detevminant of good facial esthetics and is expressed externally by the shape of facial soft tissues. Balance of the facial skeleton is most important in prediction of orthognathic surgery, however, it is not alwags coincided to soft tissue balance because the soft tissue drapes overlying hard tissue varies in thickness and tones from case to case. So, soft tissue facial balance and esthetics also should always be considered in prediction of hard tissue changes preoperatively. The chin has a paramount importance in the overall appearance of the face and facial profile because it may express individual charactor or image. Therefore positional change of the chin must be considered in any cases as the last and important option to give an overall soft tissue balance. Two cases were referred from orthodontists only for anterior segmental of teortomuy of the chin. Pre-operative evaluation showed poor soft tissue chin profiles which were not coincided to hard tissue chin balance. We altered surgical plans to fulfill balancing soft tissue profile and then could improve overall esthetics after surgery.
The purpose of this study was to compare the asymmetric degree between maxillofacial hard and soft tissues in individuals with facial asymmetry. Computerized tomographies (CT) of 34 adults (17 male, 17 female) who had facial asymmetry were taken. The CT images were transmitted to personal computers and then reconstructed into three-dimensional (3D) images through the use of computer software. In order to evaluate the degree of facial asymmetry, 6 measurements were constructed as the hard tissue measurements while 6 counterpart measurements were taken as the soft tissue measurements. The means and standard deviations were obtained for each measurement using 3D measure, then t-test was used to investigate the differences between each hard tissue measurement and the corresponding soft tissue measurement All measurements used in the present study showed statistically significant differences between the hard and soft tissues. The degree of soft tissue asymmetry was smaller than that of corresponding hard tissue asymmetry in case of chin deviation, frontal ramal inclination difference, and frontal corpus inclination difference. On the other hand, the degree of soft tissue asymmetry was greater than that of underlying hard tissue asymmetry in the measurement of lip canting and lip cheilion height difference The present study suggests that asymmetric differences of hard and soft tissue is observed nu facial asymmetric subjects and thus soft tissue analysis is needed in addition to hard tissue analysis when making an evaluation of facial asymmetry.
This paper describes the effects of nitrofen (Hi-TOK), a herbicide on the fetuses of rats. The results were observed as follows: The internal soft tissue anomalies were classified as diaphragmatic hernia, cardiac malformation (T.G.V., V.S.D., S.V.), dilatation of ventricle in brain, dilatation of renal pelvis, underdevelopment of fetal lung, shortening of cortex length and increasing of immatured glomeruli counts in the fetal kidney. The heart and diaphragm appear to be the target organs.
Lip canting is associated with facial asymmetry, and is one of the most challenging problems in surgical correction of facial deformities. The author corrected lip canting using bioabsorbable devices during orthognathic surgery. Soft tissue suspension procedures were performed on four patients with facial asymmetry. Lip lines improved for all patients. Over an observation period of five years, no complications were noted, nor did any late relapse develop. Furthermore, as time past, the effect of the Endotine suspension procedure increased probably due to induction of fibrosis on surrounding soft tissues.

Soft tissue characterization and modeling based on living tissues has been investigated in order to provide a more realistic behavior in a virtual reality based surgical simulation. In this paper, we characterize the nonlinear viscoelastic properties of intra-abdominal organs using the data from in vivo animal experiments and inverse FE parameter estimation algorithm. In the assumptions of quasi-linear-viscoelastic theory, we estimated the nonlinear material parameters to provide a physically based simulation of tissue deformations. To calibrate the parameters to the experimental results, we developed a three dimensional FE model to simulate the forces at the indenter and an optimization program that updates new parameters and runs the simulation iteratively. The comparison between simulation and experimental behavior of pig intra abdominal soft tissue are presented to provide a validness of the tissue model using our approach.
A new bacterial disease was found on leaves of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana plant grown under vinyl-house condition in winter of 1998 in Taejeon. the first symptoms of the disease are the appearance of the water-soaked and light brown spots. Later they become soft rot with brown color. Causal bacteria were isolated from diseased tissues and the same symptoms as the natural infection were developed on Kalanchoe blossfeldiana leaves by needle-prick inoculation. The causal bacterium was identified Erwinia hervicola by its bacteriological characteristics. This is the first reported of this bacterium to occur on kalanchoe blossfeldiana plant in Korea. Therefore, we proposed to name the diseases as \"bacterial soft rot of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana\" by E. herbiocla.
Soft rot symptom was observed on lily bulb in the fields and at a low temperature storage house from 1999 to 2000 in Korea. The small dark-brown lesion appeared on the bulb, and enlarged and developed into the inner scales of the bulb. The bulb became water soaked and gave out unpleasant odor. Two different pathogenic bacteria were isolated from infected tissues. The causal bacteria were identified as Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora) and Pseudomonas marginalis based on bacteriological characteristics. Pathogenicity of the bacteria was proven by Koch's postulations. This is the first report of bacterial soft rot of lily bulb in Korea caused by the two bacteria.
