Design Improvement of the Road Expansion on a Deep Thick Soft Ground (대심도 연약지반 도로확장 공사에서의 설계 개선)

  • The expansion of a road on soft ground could induce an additional settlement to the existing road because of the consolidation characteristics of the soft soil layer subjected to additional load by an adjacent banking. In such case, the existing road could be faced with various problems during the stages of the construction and maintenance, such as deterioration of not only the surface smoothness yielding the decrease in automobile performance safety but also the structural stability of the embankment. These kinds of problems are expected to occur more freguently especially for the deep ground level with a fairly thick soft soil layer. Therefore, they should be examined and studied adequately during the design stage. As a reference case study, this paper deals with the project named Namhae Expressway of 2nd Branch with the soft soil layer with the thickness upto about 50m. After a lengthy review of the original design, an improved design is proposed.

The Change of Lower Extremity Alignment according to Plantar Surface Compliance in Standing Status of Normal Adults in their Twenties (20대 정상성인의 기립자세에서 족저 접촉면의 경도에 따른 하지정렬의 변화)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the change of lower extremity alignment according to plantar surface compliance in standing status. The thirty normal adults (15 men and 15 women) aged between 20 and 29 were assigned to 3 groups: control group, experimental groups (AHPS group, ASPH group). The lower extremity alignment was examined before and after adaptation with corresponding foam types. The results of this study were as follows : 1. As the result of comparing lower extremity alignment before and after test of the control group which any change did not exist in plantar surface compliance, there were not significant differences in the angle A, B, C, D, E of right and left(p>0.05). 2. As the result of comparing lower extremity alignment before and after test of the AHPS group which forefoot part of plantar surface is hard and rear foot part is soft, there were not significant differences in the angle A of right and left(p>0.05). But, there were significantly decreased in the angle B, C, D, E of right and left(p<0.05). 3. As the result of comparing lower extremity alignment before and after test of the ASPH group which forefoot part of plantar surface is soft and rear foot part is hard, there were not significant differences in the angle A of right and left(p>0.05). But, there were significantly increased in the angle B, C, D, E of right and left(p<0.05). 4. As the result of comparing lower extremity alignment of the control group, AHPS group and ASPH group, there were not significant differences in the angle A, B, C, D, E of right and left before test(p>0.05). But, there were significant differences in the angle C, D of right and left after test(p<0.05).

DFT Study for Adsorption and Decomposition Mechanism of Trimethylene Oxide on Al(111) Surface

  • The adsorption and decomposition of trimethylene oxide ($C_3H_6O$) molecule on the Al(111) surface were investigated by the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) of density functional theory (DFT). The calculations employed a supercell ($6{\times}6{\times}3$) slab model and three-dimensional periodic boundary conditions. The strong attractive forces between $C_3H_6O$ molecule and Al atoms induce the C-O bond breaking of the ring $C_3H_6O$ molecule. Subsequently, the dissociated radical fragments of $C_3H_6O$ molecule oxidize the Al surface. The largest adsorption energy is about -260.0 kJ/mol in V3, V4 and P2, resulting a ring break at the C-O bond. We also investigated the decomposition mechanism of $C_3H_6O$ molecules on the Al(111) surface. The activation energies ($E_a$) for the dissociations V3, V4 and P2 are 133.3, 166.8 and 174.0 kJ/mol, respectively. The hcp site is the most reactive position for $C_3H_6O$ decomposing.

Controllable Patterning of an Al Surface by a PDMS Stamp (PDMS를 이용한 균일한 알루미늄 표면 패터닝 연구)

  • In this study, etched Al electrodes with ordered arrays of pits and high aspect ratios were successively obtained using a patterned protect layer on the Al surface prepared with soft lithography method. Various methods were applied to fabricate a well ordered protect layer on the Al surface and the difference of etched Al surfaces with and without a protect layer was investigated by using SEM. It was found that the etched Al surfaces were affected by using either a protect layer or a non protect layer. As a result, the Al surface with the well ordered pits could be achieved by protect layer. However, the etched Al with nonuniform pits can be obtained without any protect layers.

High aspect ratio wrinkled patterns on polymers by glancing angle deposition

  • Instability of a thin film attached to a compliant substrate often leads to emergence of exquisite wrinkle patterns with length scales that depend on the system geometry and applied stresses. However, the patterns that are created using the current techniques in polymer surface engineering, generally have low aspect ratio of undulation amplitude to wavelength, thus, limiting their application. Here, we present a novel and effective method that enables us to create wrinkles with a desired wavelength and high aspect ratio of amplitude over wavelength as large as to 2.5:1. First, we create buckle patterns with high aspect ratio of amplitude to wavelength by deposition of an amorphous carbon film on a surface of a soft polymer poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). Amorphous carbon films are used as a protective layer in structural systems and biomedical components, due to their low friction coefficient, strong wear resistance against, and high elastic modulus and hardness. The deposited carbon layer is generally under high residual compressive stresses (~1 GPa), making it susceptible to buckle delamination on a hard substrate (e.g. silicon or glass) and to wrinkle on a flexible or soft substrate. Then, we employ glancing angle deposition (GLAD) for deposition of a high aspect ratio patterns with amorphous carbon coating on a PDMS surface. Using this method, pattern amplitudes of several nm to submicron size can be achieved by varying the carbon deposition time, allowing us to harness patterned polymers substrates for variety of application. Specifically, we demonstrate a potential application of the high aspect wrinkles for changing the surface structures with low surface energy materials of amorphous carbon coatings, increasing the water wettability.

Histopathological study of uremia in a juvenile shepherd dog (어린 shepherd 개에서 요독증의 조직 병리학적 연구)

  • A 7 month old male shepherd was presented with anorexia, diarrhea, and salivation, and euthanized due to no clinical improvement. Grossly, ulcers were seen on ventral surface of tongue and stomach. The mineralization was obvious in the intercostal space, lung and inner surface of aorta. Kidney was pale, firm and irregular. Histopathology confirmed uremic pneumonitis, end stage kidney and hyperplasia of parathyroid. This case was the typical uremic condition of juvenile dog, which was characterized the diffuse soft tissue mineralization due to hyperparathyroidism secondary to chronic renal failure.

  • This paper presents a study of geotechnical treatment for artesian pressure after extensive investigation was performed on the distribution and characteristics of artesian condition which exists at Yangsan/Mulgeurn site. The result of analysis indicates that the artesian pressure seems to be up to 2.9M above the existing ground surface, originating from the higher ground water recharging sources in the surrounding hills and mountains. There is no harmful effect after the site development since the height of embankment is more than 4M above the existing ground surface.

  • We estimated various neuron functions to construct of engineering neurons, which are the combination of sigmoid, linear, sine, quadric, double/single bended, soft max/minimum functions. These combinations are estimated by the property on the potential surface between the learning points, calculation speed, and learning convergence; because the surface depends on the inference ability of a neuron system; and speed and convergence are depend on the efficiency on the points of engineering applications.   • Phenomelocial evidences for three-dimensional crystallizing $\pi$-bondings are investigated in case of the soft layer very near the suface of the metal , the surface layer of certain crystaline thermoplastics. the increased contact area of the metalic frictional interface and the delaminated sheet-like wear particles of the metal . The wear mechanisms are the cracks at the boundaries of the grains and their propagations parallel to the surface. The cracks are made by the reorientations of the atoms in the grains and the rotations of the grains.

  • Surface mould ripened soft cheeses such as Camembert are characterized by the presence of a felt-like coating of white mycelia due to the growth of Penicillium camemberti at the surface. The presence of this mould gives these cheeses a different appearance, as well as a typical aroma and taste. It also lead to a more complex ripening than in other varieties of cheese with simple flora. Theses cheeses are becoming increasingly popular with consumer and there is an increasing demand for them.
