Effect of molar ratios on strength, microstructure & embodied energy of metakaolin geopolymer

  • In this study, twenty-five geopolymer (GP) mixes were prepared by varying the alkaline solids to Metakaolin (MK) and sodium silicate to NaOH ratios from 0.1 to 0.5 and 0.2 to 1.0, respectively, thus giving a wide range of molar ratios of silica to alumina, sodium oxide to alumina and water to sodium oxide. The compressive strength of these GP mixes was determined for four curing schemes involving oven curing at 100℃ for 24 h and three ambient curing with the curing ages of 3, 14, and 28 days. The test results revealed that for the manufacture of GP binder for structural applications of strength up to 90 MPa, the molar ratio of silica to alumina should be greater than 2.3, sodium oxide to alumina should be between 0.6 to 1.2, and water to sodium oxide should not exceed 12. The compressive strength of ambient cured GP mortar gets stabilized at 28 days of ambient curing. Experimental findings were also corroborated by GP microstructure analysis. The embodied energy of MK-based GP mortars, especially of high strength, is significantly less than the cement mortar of equivalent strength.

  • Slags are by-products of the metallurgical industry. The most important slag from the standpoint of the quantity used as building material is iron blastfurnace slag. Slags are either crystalline stable solid used as aggregates or glassy material used as hydraulic binder. Slag cements are low heat of hydration cements. Slags react more slowly with than portland cement but they can be activated chemically. Activatiors can be either alkaline activators such as soda, lime, sodium carbonate, sodium silicate or sulphate activators such as calcium sulphate or phosphogypsum. So, in this study slaked lime was used as an activator that the compressive strength of this modified cement(M1 type) is high range in early age. And initial setting time of M1 type cement was shorter than conventional cements.

Evaluation of protective coatings for geopolymer mortar under aggressive environment

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the durability of fly ash based geopolymer mortar with and without protective coatings in aggressive chemical environments. The source materials for geopolymer are Fly ash and Ground Granulated Blast furnace Slag (GGBS) and they are considered in the combination of 80% & 20% respectively. Two Molarities of NaOH solution were considered such as 8M and 10M. The ratio of binder to sand and Sodium silicate to Sodium hydroxide solution (Na2SiO3/NaOH) are taken as 1:2 and 2 respectively. The alkaline liquid to binder ratio is 0.4. Compressive strength tests were conducted at various ages of the mortar specimens. In order to evaluate the performance of coatings on geopolymer mortar under aggressive chemical environment, the mortar specimens were coated with two different types of coatings such as epoxy and Acrylic. They were then subjected to different chemical environments by immersing them in 10% standard solutions of each ammonium nitrate, sodium chloride and sulphuric acid. Drop in compressive strength as a result of chemical exposure was considered as a measure of chemical attack and the drop in compressive strength was measured after 30 and 60 days of chemical exposure. The compressive strength results following chemical exposure indicated that the specimens containing the acrylic coating proved to be more resistant to chemical attacks. The control specimen without coating showed a much greater degree of deterioration. Therefore, the application of acrylic coating was invariably much more effective in improving the compressive strength as well as the resistance of mortar against chemical attacks. The results also indicated that among all the aggressive attacks, the sulphate environment has the most adverse effect in terms of lowering the strength.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of ternary pastes activated with multi-colors glass and brick wastes

  • Disposal of waste glass derived from bottle or packaging glass, flat glass, domestic glass is one of the major environmental defies. Moreover, the remnants of bricks resulting from the remnants of buildings are also considered an important factor in polluting the environment due to the difficulty of filling or getting rid it. The aim of this study is to valorize these wastes through chemical activation to be an environmentally friendly material. The Microstructure, compressive strength, setting time, drying shrinkage, water absorption of different pastes produced by clear glass (CG), green glass (GG) and brick waste (BP) activated were tested and recorded after curing for 3, 7, 28 and 365 days. Five samples of pastes were mixed in proportions represented by: 100% GP (GP), 100% GGP (GGP), 100% BP (BP), 90% GP + 10% BP (GPB) and 90% GGP + 10% BP (GGPB). Various parameters considered in this study include sodium hydroxide concentrations (10 mol/l); 0.4 as alkaline liquid to binder ratio; 2.5 as sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide ratio and cured at 60℃ for 24 hours. Experimental results revealed that the addition of 10% of BP resulted in an increased strength performance of geopolymer paste especially with GGPB compared to GGP in 365 days. In addition, the 10% amount of BP increases the absorption and shrinkage rate of geopolymer pastes (GPB and GGPB) by reducing the setting time. SEM results revealed that the addition of BP and GP resulted in a dense structure.

The Study on the Strength Improvement $CO_2$ Mold Bonded With High Mole-Ratio Sodium Silicates (고(高)MOLE비(比)의 규산(珪酸)소다를 사용(使用)한 $CO_2$ 주형(鑄型)의 강도개선(强度改善)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • The influences of some factors on the variation of compression strength of $CO_2$ process were investigated with an attention given to use of high $SiO_2\;/Na_2O$ silicate, addition of organics and gassing operation. 1) Higher ratio binder offers faster rates of hardening with lower $CO_2$ consumption requiring more concentration for a good strength development. A mixture containing 4 percent of 2.7:1 ratio silicate produces the strength above $8kg\;/\;cm^2$ after 80 seconds gassing, but 5% and 6% respectively of 3.0:1 and3.3:1 ratio silicate are necessary to achieve equivalent levels of strength. 2) The correct water content in sand mixtures containing higher ratio silicates is necessary for the better strength properties to be obtained. The addition of 1% water to the sand mixtures bonded with 5%,3:1 ratio and 6%,3.3:1 ratio silicates maintains near-maximum strength on extended gassing. 3) When higher ratio silicates with 3:1 and 3.3:1 ratios are used,the addition of organic additives such as oil, sucrose and polyol results in considerable changes in strength. The presence of 1.0 to 1.5 percent of polyol produces a noticiable improvement 4) Gas diluted with air raises the efficiency of gas utilization. When gas contains 50 percent $CO_2$, the efficience is significantly increased with the best strength in the silicates having high ratios of 3:1 and 3.3:1. 5) The strength of molds is liable to change on storage with the reduction in water content. The magnitude of the strength change is determinded with the mole ratio. The presence of polyol in the mixture with 3.3:1 ratio silicate has a pronounced effect on maintaining the gassed strength.

Nano-Silica effect on the physicomechanical properties of geopolymer composites

  • Addition of nano-$SiO_2$ (NS) to geopolymer composites has been studied through measurement of compressive strengths, FTIR and XRD analysis. Alumino-silicate materials are coarse aggregate included waste concrete and demolished walls with its cementing binder, cement kiln dust (CKD) used and can possess a pronouncing activation for the geopolymer reaction resulting from the high alkali contents within. Materials prepared at water/binder ratios in a range of 0.30: 0.40 under curing of $40^{\circ}C$ and 100% Relative Humidity (R.H.), while the used activator is sodium hydroxide in the ratio of 2 wt. %. First, CKD is added in the ratio from 10 up to 50 wt., %, and the demolished walls was varied depending on the used CKD content, while using constant ratio of waste concrete (40 wt., %). Second step, depending on the optimum CKD ratio resulted from the first one (40 wt. %), so the control geopolymer mix composed of cement kiln dust, demolished walls and waste concrete in the ratio (40:20:40, wt %). Nano-silica partially replaced waste concrete by 1 up to 8%. Results indicated that, compressive strengths of geopolymer mixes incorporating nano-silica were obviously higher than those control one, especially at early ages and specially with 3%NS.

A Fundamental Study on Application Eco Friendly Grouting Material for Old Aged Reserve Reinforcement (노후 저수지 보강을 위한 환경 친화적 그라우팅 주입재 적용에 관한 기초연구)

  • There are 17,427 reservoirs in Korea, of which about 96% were built before the mid 1980s. Therefore, aging is severe and reinforcement are necessary. In addition, aged reservoirs, which are more than 50 years old, account for 70% of the total. Therefore, there is a problem such as the collapse of the reservoir and the decrease of the storage capacity due to progress of aging with time. The grouting method using cement is mainly used as maintenance and reinforcement method of old reservoir. However, the grouting method using cement has engineering and environmental problems. In order to solve the engineering and environmental problems of cement grouting method, an eco-friendly grouting material was developed that mixes circular resource grouting binder, high molar ratio sodium silicate and colloidal silica. The engineering and environmental properties of the developed injection materials were evaluated by conducting gel time, homo-gel strength, sea water resistance test and environmental stability evaluation. Also, examined the possibility of replacing OPC existing aged reservoir reinforcement methods. As a result, it was found out that it was better than the conventional cement method in terms of engineering and environment. However, since this study is the result of laboratory test, it is necessary of verify the application at field of aged reservoir.

An Experimental Study on the Geopolymer for Wood Wool Ceramic Board (목모 패널용 Geopolymer Binder 개발에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This paper focused on development of geopolymer for wood wool ceramic board. Geopolymer can substitude ordinary portland cement and its accelerator of wood wool cement board as inorganic polymer. In this study, what we would obtain geopolymer's properties such as initial setting time(KS L 5108), flow(KS L 5102) and compressive strength of 3days aged(KS L 5105), was less than 1 hour, more than $110\%$, more than 40Mpa. Geopolymer have three essential materials called filler, hardener and geopolymer liquor. So, We applied filler by quartz, hardener by blast furnace slag powder, metakaoline and fly ash, geopolymer liquor by NaOH, KOH and sodium silicate solution. As result of this experiment, what we could obtain best fitted geopolymer's properties such as initial setting time, flow and compressive strength of 3days aged, was 45min, $116\%$ and 43.6Mpa. This result can be applicable to commercial wood wool ceramic board.

  • In this research, isothermal conduction calorimetry analysis has been conducted to investigate the reactivity of alkali activated slag binders. In order to secure the reactivity and workability of alkali activated slag binders, experiences with various types and concentrations of alkali activators were performed. Isothermal conduction calorimetry were measured with different alkali activators and mass ratio of $SO_3$ to binders as variables, and sodium tripolyphosphate ($Na_2P_3O_{10}$) and hydrated sodium borate ($Na_2B_4O_710H_2O$) were used to control setting time. As a results, alkali activated slag binders required alkali activators with 4 to 5 percent of concentration to accelerate the formation of calcium silicate hydrate(C-S-H) by alkali-activation, and overall heat generation rate delayed as accumulated heat decreased due to the high $SO_3$ contents. Moreover, the use of hydrated sodium borate as setting retarder causes elongated setting time due to delaying heat generation, so it can be considered that setting retarder played an important role in delaying total heat generation rate.

  • Increasing emphasis on energy conservation and environmental protection has led to the investigation of the alternatives to customary building materials. Some of the significant goals behind understaking such investigations are to reduce the greenhouse gasemissions and minimize the energy required formaterial production.The usage of concrete around the world is second only to water. Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is conventionally used as the primary binder to produce concrete. The cement production is a significant industrial activity in terms of its volume and contribution to greenhouse gas emission. Globally, the production of cement contributes at least 5 to 7 % of $CO_2$. Another major problem of the environment is to dispose off the fly ash, a hazardous waste material, which is produced by thermal power plant by combustion of coal in power generation processes. The geopolymer concrete aims at utilizing the maximum amount of fly ash and reduce $CO_2$ emission in atmosphere by avoiding use of cement to making concrete. This paper reports an experimental work conducted to investigate the effect of curing conditions on the compressive strength of geopolymer concrete prepared by using fly ash as base material and combination of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate as alkaline activator.
