Effects of a mobile healthcare service provided by public health centers on practicing of health behaviors and health risk factors

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated whether a mobile health (mHealth) application can instigate healthy behavioral changes and improvements in metabolic disorders in individuals with metabolic abnormalities. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Participants were divided into an mHealth intervention group (IG), which used a mobile app for 24 weeks, and a conventional IG. All mobile apps featured activity monitors, with blood pressure and glucose monitors, and body-composition measuring devices. The two groups were compared after 24 weeks in terms of health-behavior practice rate and changes in the proportion of people with health risks, and health behaviors performed by the IG that contributed to reductions in more than one health risk factor were analyzed using multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: Preference for low-sodium diet, reading nutritional facts, having breakfast, and performing moderate physical activity significantly increased in the mHealth IG. Furthermore, the mHealth IG showed a significant increase of eight items in the mini-dietary assessment; particularly, the items "I eat at least two types of vegetables of various colors at every meal" and "I consume dairies, such as milk, yogurt, and cheese, every day." The proportion of people with health risks, with the exception of fasting glucose, significantly decreased in the mHealth IG, while only the proportion of people with at-risk triglycerides and waist circumference of females significantly decreased in the control group. Finally, compared to those who did not show improvements of health risks, those who showed improvements of health risks in the mHealth IG had an odds ratio of 1.61 for moderate to vigorous physical activity, 1.65 for "I do not add more salt or soy sauce in my food," and 1.77 for "I remove fat in my meat before eating." CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that the additional use of a community-based mHealth service through a mobile application is effective for improving health behaviors and lowering metabolic risks in Koreans.

  • 본 연구에서는 콘크리트의 조기강도 확보를 통해 골조공기를 단축하는 것을 목표로 하여 시멘트 종류, 고성능감수제의 감수율, 초기수화 촉진 혼화제의 혼입에 따른 콘크리트의 조기강도 발현성능을 검토하였다. 조기강도 개선형 시멘트와 Sodium persulfate, Potassium hydroxide의 초기수화 촉진물질에 의해 12시간에 5MPa, 18시간에 14MPa의 조기강도를 확보할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이를 통해 건설현장에서 거푸집의 골조공기를 단축시켜 원가절감이 가능할 것으로 기대된다.

Possible Protective Effects of Quercetin and Sodium Gluconate Against Colon Cancer Induction by Dimethylhydrazine in Mice

  • Micronutrients in food have been found to have chemopreventive effects, supporting the conclusions from epidemiologie studies that consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables reduces cancer risk. The present study was carried out to evaluate the role of querctin (Q) and sodium gluconate (GNA) supplementation separately or in combination in ameliorating promotion of colon tumor development by dimethyl-hydrazine (DMH) in mice. Histopathological observation of colons in mice treated with DMH showed goblet cell dysplasia with inflammatory cell infiltration. This pathological finding was associated with significant alteration in oxidative stress markers in colon tissues and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels in plasma. Mice co-treated with GNA and Q showed mild changes of absorptive and goblet cells and inflammatory cell infiltration in lamina properia, with improvement in oxidative stress markers. In conclusion, findings of the present study indicate significant roles for reactive oxygen species (ROS) in pathogenesis of DMH-induced colon toxicity and initiation of colon cancer. Also, they suggest that Q, GNA or the combination of both have a positive beneficial effect against DMH induced colonic cancer induction in mice.

Effects of Korean Radish on DSS-Induced Ulcerative Colitis in Mice

  • The present study aimed to investigate the comparative evaluation of pharmacological efficacy between sulfasalazine alone and combination with herbal medicine on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced UC in mice. Balb/c mice received 5% DSS in drinking water for 7 days to induce colitis. Animals were divided into five groups (n = 9): group I-normal group, group II-DSS control group, group III-DSS + sulfasalazine (30 mg/kg), group IV-DSS + sulfasalazine (60 mg/kg), group V-DSS + sulfasalazine (30 mg/kg) + Radish Extract mixture (30 mg /kg) (SRE). DSS-treated mice developed symptoms similar to those of human UC, such as severe bloody diarrhea and weight loss. SRE supplementation, as well as sulfasalazine, suppressed colonic length and mucosal inflammatory infiltration. In addition, SRE treatment significantly reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory signaling moleculesthrough suppression both mitogen-activated protein kinases(MAPK) and nuclear factor-kappa B ($NF-{\kappa}B$) signaling pathways, and prevented the apoptosis of colon. Moreover, SRE administration significantly led to the up-regulation of anti-oxidant enzyme including SOD and Catalase. This is the first report that Radish extract mixture combined with sulfasalazine protects against experimental UC via the inhibition of both inflammation and apoptosis, very similar to the standard-of-care sulfasalazine.

한국잔디종자의 발아촉진을 위한 Sodium Hypochlorite와 Potassium Hydroxide 처리효과의 비교 (Comparison of Sodium Hypochiorite and Potassium Hydroxide as Seed Treatment for Stimulating Germination of Korean Lawngrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) Seed)

  • Research was conducted to obtain easy and secure methods for promoting germination of Korean lawngrass (Zoysia japonic a Steud.) seed. The effect of sodium hypochiorite (NaOCl) treatment on germination of seeds was compared with that of potassium hydroxide (KOH) treatment under conditions of duration of seed storage after harvest and temperature of treatment. Emergence of seedlings from soil and micro-flora infection rate among seed treatments were investigated. 1. The promotion of germination was much more evident in seeds treated with 4% NaOCl for 8 and 10 hours than in seeds treated with 25% or 30% KOH for 30 and 40 minutes. Longer durations of storage before seed treatment in KOH than in NaOCl were required to initiate enough germination. 2. Differences in temperature of treatment with NaOCT did not have much influence on germination of seeds and treatment temperature of 15˚C was better than that of 200˚C and 300˚C for promoting germination. But seed treatment with KOH significantly promoted germination with increasing temperature of treatment from I 5˚C to 20˚C and 30˚C. 3. GA$_3$ treatment enhanced germination in NaOCl-pretreated seeds at early stage of imbibition and in-creased about 10% germination after 10 days of imbibition in KOH-pretreated seeds. 4. NaOC1 treatments significantly decreased the rate of the infection of microflora in seed samples and enhaced emergence of seedlings from soil compared with KOH treatment. 5. NaOC1 treatment had advantage over KOH treatment with respect to ease of preparing, securing and handling in stimulating germinating of Korean lawngrass seeds.

Using Sustainable Agriculture to Improve Human Nutrition and Health

  • The purpose of this article is twofold: 1) to provide nutrition professionals with the history of how the concept of sustainable diets was introduced to the nutrition profession and 2) to describe how different sustainable agricultural practices offer potential for improving human nutrition and health. The idea of connecting sustainable agriculture With the promotion of human nutrition and health is not new. It is a concept that was introduced to the nutrition profession more than 20 years ago. To foster healthful, sustainable diets, consumers need to choose more whole foods. From the standpoint of nutrition and health, whole foods are naturally higher in fiber and lower in fat, sodium, sugar and additives compared to highly processed foods. From the standpoint of agricultural sustainability, whole foods bypass the high-energy costs of food processing and transportation. Organic farming systems offer potential benefits to human health through reducing farmers' exposure to pesticides and by increasing the total phenolic content in selected food crops. Participation in farmers' market nutrition programs and gardening has been associated with increased fruit and vegetable intake. Gardening may also be a way to increase access to fresh produce in low-income populations that do not have access to nutritious food outlets and to increase physical activity. Further research is needed to assess the human nutrition and health benefits of other types of sustainable agriculture strategies and to investigate the links among different agricultural practices with nutrient and total phenolic content in a wider variety of important food crops.

직장인 대상 저염화 교육 프로그램의 효과 평가 (Evaluation of the Effectiveness of a Salt Reduction Program for Employees)

  • 본 연구는 대구시 8개 병원과 사업체에 근무하는 직장인 251명을 대상으로 교육집단 166명, 비교육집단 85명으로 나누어 5주간 저염화 영양교육 프로그램을 운영하고 그 효과를 평가하였으며, 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1) 저염화 교육프로그램 실시 결과 교육전 두 집단간의 짠맛에 대한 미각판정치에 차이가 없었으나, 교육 후 교육집단의 경우 미각판정치가 유의하게 감소하였다 (p < 0.001). 또 한 교육 후 영양지식, 짜게 먹는 식태도 및 식행동이 비교육 집단에서는 유의한 차이가 없었으나 교육집단에서는 모두 유의하게 개선되었다 (p < 0.001). 2) 교육집단에서 24시간 소변 수집을 통한 나트륨 섭취량은 교육 전에 비해 교육 후 감소하였으나, 통계적으로 유의하지는 않았다. 3) 외식 빈도가 잦을수록, 외식비가 높을수록 짜게 먹는 경향이 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 미각판정치와 짜게 먹는 식행동 및 식태도간 유의한 상관관계를 나타내었다. 또한 짜게 먹는 식태도와 나트륨 섭취량간에 유의한 상관관계를 나타내어 식태도가 나쁠수록 나트륨 섭취량이 높은 것으로 나타났다.

한국 중년성인의 고혈압과 영양환경요인의 관련성 - 1998년과 2001년 국민건강.영양조사 결과에 근거하여 - (Nutritional Environment Influences Hypertension in the Middle-aged Korean Adults - based on 1998 & 2001 National Health and Nutrition Survey -)

  • This study was performed to delineate the relationship between lifestyle and nutritional risk factors associated with hypertension in representative middle-aged Korean population. Hypertension in this study is defined as hypertensive ($SBP{\geq}140mmHg\;or\;DBP{\geq}90mmHg$) adults without recognition of a disease state before a health exam. With data from the 1998 and 2001 National Health and Nutritional Survey, nutrient intakes of 6,112 adults, 40-64 years of age were calculated using food composition database and matched with health examination records by individual ID. After excluding those with extreme intake values, the number of final subjects included in the analysis was 5,200 (male 2,458, female 2,742). Using logistic regression method, socio-demographic data, lifestyle factors, and nutrient intakes were analyzed. Risky factors for hypertension revealed in this study were age, sex, BMI over 23, waist circumference, alcohol intake of more than 16g (male) or 8g (female). Regarding nutrient intakes, the intakes of highest quartile for energy (${\geq}2363.0kcal$) and protein (${\geq}90.2g$) were significantly associated with higher risk of hypertension after adjusting for age, sex, and other socio-demographic factors (OR=1.312(1.046-1.711), OR=1.488(1.194-1.854), respectively)). Although high intakes of sodium (${\geq}6604.0mg$) and phosphorus seemed to be risk factors of hypertension also before energy adjustment (OR=1.278(1.034-1.581), OR=1.280(1.024-1.600), respectively), only high intakes of energy and protein remained significant after adjustment. This study revealed that modifying risky lifestyles and dietary patterns, especially high energy intake, high protein intake, and high alcohol drinking, in middle-aged Korean adults could result in a prevalence decrease and/or prevention of hypertension.

Anti-tumor Promoting Activity of Some Malaysian Traditional Vegetables (Ulam)

  • Ethanolic extracts of different parts of 10 local traditional vegetables (ulam) (Amaranthus gangeticus, Jussiaea linifolia, Eugenia polyantha, Trapa incisa, Trichosanthes anquina, Mangifera indica, Pachyrrhirus erosus, Barringtonia mcarostachya, Carica papaya, and Coleus tuberosus) were screened for in vitro antitumor promoting activity using the inhibition test of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) activation in Raji cells induced by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate and sodium-n-butyrate. All the extracts were found to have strong inhibition activity toward EBV-activation, except for leaf extract of T. anquina. The extracts were non-cytotoxic to the Raji cells except for the extracts of A. gangeticus (leaves), B. macrostachya (leaves), E. polyantha (young leaves), and J. linifolia (leaves) where the viability of the cells were decreased significantly.

Sorbitol이 결합된 아크릴계 고흡수성 수지의 합성 및 특성 (Synthesis and Characterizations of Polyacrylic Superabsorbent Polymer Containing Sorbitol)

  • 역상현탁 중합방법으로 sodium acrylate 및 아크릴산을 모노머로 사용하고 분산제로는 sucrose fatty acid ester(S-570), 증점제로는 Xanthan-gum, 가교제로는 EDGMA 및 GPGE, 개시제로는 $K_2S_2O_8$, 및 용매로는 사이클로헥산을 사용하여, sorbitol의 함유량을 10~50%로 변화시키면서 sorbitol이 결합하고 있는 고흡수성 수지(SAP)를 합성하였다. 합성한 고흡수성 수지를 모노머량의 0.05~0.40mol%로 표면가교 시켰고, 입자형태는 구형이었으며 입자크기 분포는 $177{\sim}707{\mu}m$ 이었다. 고흡수성 수지의 흡수량은 물에 대하여는 785~1086배 이었고, 0.9% NaCl 용액에 대해서는 50~83배 이었다. Sorbitol의 함유랑이 증가할 수록 고흡수성 수지의 흡수량과 보수량은 감소하였으며, +5 cal/g SAP의 흡열특성을 나타내었다.
