Air stable nanoparticles were prepared from cobalt sulphate using tetra butyl ammonium bromide as surfactant and sodium borohydride as reductant at room temperature. The cobalt nanocolloids in aqueous medium were found to be efficient catalysts for the degradation of toxic organic dyes. Our present study involves degradation of Methylene Blue and Rhodamine-B using cobalt nanoparticles and easy recovery of the catalyst from the system. The recovered nanoparticles could be recycled several times without loss of catalytic activity. Palladium nanoparticles prepared from palladium chloride and the same surfactant were found to degrade the organic dyes effectively but lose their catalytic activity after recovery. The cause of dye colour discharge by nanocolloids has been assigned based on our experimental findings.
Hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl acetate (PNPA) and p-nitrophenyldiphenyl phosphate (PNPDPP) by N-chloro compounds in micellar solution were studied. N,N'-dichloroisocyanuric acid sodium salt (DCI) in cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTACl) micellar solution gave pseudo first-order kinetics. But, DCI in cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr) micellar solution showed typical series first-order kinetics - fast hydrolysis of the esters and concomitant slow decay of the hydrolyzed product, p-nitrophenolate. The hydrolysis rate was decreased as the hydrophobicity of N-chloro compounds was increased, which is the opposite trend to the usual bimolecular micellar reaction. This curious behavior of the N-chloro compounds in the catalytic hydrolysis of PNPA and PNPDPP in a cationic micellar system can be best explained by participation of counter ions of the surfactants during hydrolysis.
Chemical shifts in aqueous sodium dodecylsulfate(SDS) micellar solution solublizing phenol, catechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone have been measured to investigate solubilization properties. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance frequencies of solubilizates as well as those of the ${\alpha}$-methylene, middle methylene and terminal methyl of SDS shift linearly as a function of solubilizate concentration. From the plots of observed chemical shift (v) vs solubilizate concentration, slope (a) and solubilizate free chemical shift ($v_0$) are obtained. They are very informative to solubilization site of the systems. Catechol and phenol solubilized SDS and catechol solubilized dodecylpyridinium chloride(DPC), dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide(DTAB) systems are studied using the same method to compare head group effect and middle methylene proton signal splitting. It is proposed that phenol and catechol are inserted into micellar interior and the number of methylenes assigned to the higher field peaks is 5.0${\pm}$0.5.
Effects of glutamic acid (Glu) and monosodium glutamate (MSG) on oxidative stability of oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions with different emulsifier charges during riboflavin (RF) photosensitization were evaluated by analyzing headspace oxygen content and conjugated dienes. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), Tween 20, and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were used as cationic, neutral, and anionic emulsifiers, respectively. Glu acted as an antioxidant in CTAB- and Tween-20-stabilized O/W emulsions during RF sensitization, whereas Glu acted as prooxidants in SDS-stabilized O/W emulsions in the dark. However, adding MSG did not have a constant impact on the degree of oxidation in O/W emulsions irrespective of the emulsifier charge. In RF-photosensitized O/W emulsions, the emulsifier charge had a greater influence on antioxidant properties of Glu than on those of MSG.

The betaine content of Saliconia herbacea L. was determined by reverse-phase high performance chromatog-raphy on a C_(18) column. A 50% methanol extract was passed through a anion exchanger Ambelite IRA 400 (quaternary ammonium type, OH-) column and a strong cation exchanger Ambelite IR 120 (sulfonic acid type, $H^+$) column to remove amino acids, zwitter ions which are interfere with betaine analysis. The betaine extract was derivatized with 18-crown-6-ether and 4-bromophenacyl bromide (PBPB) for UV-labelling. Betaine in Saliconia herbacea L. was analysed on a mobile phase contained 13 mM sodium heptane sulfonic acid and 5 mM $Na_2SO_4$ in deionized water by isocratic elution for 30 min. The recovery ratio of betaine from Saliconia herbacea L. extract was 83.6%. The mean betaine value for Saliconia herbacea L. determined by the described method is 4.85 mg/mL with a standard deviation of 0.127.
A new type of filler for epoxy-clay nanocomposites has been prepared by the reaction of octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide and layered sodium montmorillonite (MMT) via an ion-exchange reaction. The gallery space was further modified by grafting the aminopropyl groups via a reaction between a octadecyltrimethylammonium-MMT and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS). The interlayer modification of MMT was confirmed by XRD, IR, and solid-state $^{29}$ Si CP/MAS NMR. Furthermore, clay-polymer nanocomposites have been synthesized by the polymerization of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A(DGEBA) and $C_{18}$ H$_{37}$ N($CH_3$)$_3$-APS-MMT. The resulting hybrid nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results proved that the organomontmorillonite could be exfoliated and uniformly dispersed in the epoxy matrix.

This study was conducted to investigate the influence of addition of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), and amine [ethylamine (EA) or ethylene diamine (EDA)] to aqueous sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution on polyester alkaline hydrolysis, The experimental variables such as CTAB concentration, EA or EDA concentration, NaOH concentration, temperature and time were compared, and the changes in physical and chemical properties of alkalinehydrolyzed PET fabrics depending on their treated conditions were measured, The results are as follows: 1. By adding CTAB and amine in aqueous NaOH solution, increasing effect on weight loss of PET fabrics was obtained in simultaneous addition of CTAB and EDA, but not in CTAB and EA. 2. By adding CTAB & EDA simultaneously, increasing effect on weight loss was obtained regardless of EDA concentration, time and temperature, and it was more effective at lower NaOH concentration. :l. The increase of void space (or irregularly grooved surface), of softness, of wickability, of dyeability on PET fabric, and the decrease of tensile strength, of molecular weight were observed according to the weight loss on the PET fabrics. These changes were equal to all alkaline-hydrolyzed PET fabrics regardless of addition of CTAB and amine. l. There was little changes on crystallinity, thermal behavior when PET fiber was treated with ,aqueous NaOH solution with CTAB and EDA. These results supported that increasing effect on weight loss take place without inducing of fine structural change of PET fibers.

Solvent sublation has been studied for the separation and determination of trace Zn(Ⅱ) and Pb(Ⅱ) in water samples. A synergy producing method was utilized to improve the efficiency of extraction in the sublation using an ion-pair of metal-naphth oate {M-(Nph)3- } complexes and tetra-n-butylammonium (TBA+ ) ion. After the M-(Nph)3- complexes were formed by adding 1-naphthoic acid to the sample solution, tetra-n-butylammonium bromide was added in the solution to form the ion-pair. And sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) was added to make the ion-pair hydrophobic. The ion-pairs of the metal complexes were floated and extracted into methylisobutyl ketone (MIBK) from the aqueous solution by bubbling with nitrogen gas in a flotation cell. Metal ions in MIBK solution were measured by graphite furnace-AAS. Experimental conditions were optimized as follow so. After the pH of a 1.0 L water sample was adjusted to 5.0, 6.0 mL of 0.1 M 1-HNph and 10 mL of 0.03 M TBA-bromide were added to the sample to form ion-pairs, and 2.0 mL of 0.2%(w/v) SLS was added to make the ion-pairs hydrophobic. The solution was bubbled with 30 mL/min N2 gas for 5 minutes in a flotation cell. Linear calibration curves were obtained for the determination of Zn(Ⅱ) and Pb(Ⅱ) in several water samples. Reproducible results of showing a relative standard deviation of < 10% and recoveries of 80-100% could be obtained.
The cellulase components were partially purified from the culture filtrate of the alkalophilic bacterium Pseudomonas sp. AC-711 and its enzymatic properties were characterized. The specific activity of the purified major enzyme component was 3.5 units/mg protein as carboxymethyl cellulase and the yield was 23% of the total activity of the culture broth. The molecular weight of the component was 46,000 and the Km and Vmax on CMC were determined as $15.4mg\;mL^{-1}$ and $4.17{\mu}moles\;mL^{-1}\;min^{-1}$, respectively. The enzyme was stable at the temperatures below $60^{\circ}C$ and at the pH range of 4.0~11.0, and the optimal temperature and pH were $60^{\circ}C$ and pH 8.0, respectively. The enzyme activity was not significantly affected by the common surfactants (concentration: 0.05%) such as ${\alpha}$-olefin sulfonate, linear alkylbenzene sulfonate, sodium dodecyl sulfonate, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide and Tween 80. The enzyme was activated by the metal ions such as $Ca^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, whereas inhibited by $Hg^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$. The enzyme exhibited relatively high activity toward amorphous CMC as compared with crystalline substrates such as filter paper and avicel.
The magnetized water is known to have a unique pattern of hydrogen bond between water molecules, thereby producing different physicochemical properties from the ordinary water. We have examined the effect of magnetized water on the change of critical micelle concentrations (CMC) of some surfactants. The CMC changes of SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) and CTAB (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) dissolved in the magnetized water have been determined by the conductivity measurement at $25\;{^{\circ}C}$ and that of SDS, CTAB and Pluronic F-68 have also been examined by the surface tension method at $25\;{^{\circ}C}$. The CMC variation of SDS was examined by ITC (Isothermal Titration Calorimeter) at $25\;{^{\circ}C}$. The CMC of SDS, CTAB, and Pluronic F-68 are more decreased in the magnetized water, SDS is about $2.7{\sim}6.5$25 %, CTAB is about $2.3{\sim}3.0$%, and Pluronic F-68 is about 24.2 %, than in the control water.
