Long-term aluminum (Al) corrosion tests were designed to investigate the condition that would generate severe Al corrosion and precipitation. Buffer agents of sodium tetraborate (NaTB), trisodium phosphate (TSP) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were adopted. The insulation materials, fiberglass and calcium silicate (Ca-sil), were examined to explore their effects on Al corrosion. The results show that significant precipitates were formed in both NaTB/TSP-buffered solutions at high pH. The precipitates formed in NaTB solution raise more concerns on chemical effects in GSI-191. A passivation layer formed on the surfaces of coupon in solution with the presence of insulations could effectively mitigate Al corrosion. The Fe-enriched intermetallic particles (IPs) embedded in coupon appeared to serve as seeds to readily induce precipitation via providing extra area for heterogeneous Al hydroxide precipitation. X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses indicate that the precipitates are mainly boehmite (γ-AlOOH) and no direct evidence confirms the presence of sodium aluminum silicate or calcium phosphate.

WeI have studied the process for synthesizing porous silica with a specific surface area of minimum $800m^2/g$ by adding surfactant [Poly Etylene Glycol(PEG) and Hydroxy Propyl Cellulose(HPC)] to the sol-gel reaction between sodium silicate and hydrochloric acid. NaCl, the by-product of the sol-gel reaction, was water cleaned and removed; when 200 ml of water was used to clean 50 g of silica gel, NaCl remaining in the silica gel was reduced to maximum 0.81wt%. The appropriate level of surfactant for silica gel synthesizing proved to be below 5%. As a result of the experiment, for the silica synthesized by adding surfactant of HPC(2.5%)+PEG(2.5%), the surfactant area was $860m^2/g$ and grain size was $20-50{\mu}m$. From this study, we have concluded that it is of industrial significance that specific surface area is improved and silica of a regular grain size is obtained just by adding surfactant in the gel process or drying process of silica.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using sedimentation calcium carbonate production based on microorganism activities in the strength manifestation of various soil conditions including ground. For analysis and comparison of microbial cementation soil's strength, unconfined compression test was executed by each content of soil(S), water(W), microorganism(B), microorganism and deposit (BF), microorganism, admixture and deposit(BCF) at specimen. The result, the strength of SB(soil+microorganism) and SBF(soil+microorganism+deposit) increased about 8%, 15% than SW(soil+water). Also, initial strength increased. But the strength of SBC(soil+microorganism+admixture) and SBCF(soil+microorganism+deposit+admixture) increased about 71%, 115% than SW(soil+water). The results of the SEM analysis, leading to the formation of an adhesive substance layers at the surface and resulting in firm particle configuration. The XRD examination of the sediment resulting from the reaction between the microorganism and the deposit control agent confirmed the presence of a type of calcium carbonate ($CaCo_3$) vaterite, which affects soil strength formation, as well as sodium silicate, silicides and so forth. This indicates that microorganism plays an important role in the production of carbonate ($CaCo_3$), sodium silicate and silicides. It affects to revelation of ground strength.

This research have investigated the application and the injection effect of the alkaline silicasol grouting materia (which is) recently developed. To compare the engineering characteristics of the alkaline silicasol which is formed with 3D-gel and the sodium silicate, it have studied the strength and environmental effects through the laboratory test, and field application was investigated with a review of the injection effect and waterproof through the field test. As a result of the laboratory test, unconfined compression strength of alkaline silicasol was 5 times more than sodium silicate. As a result of the leaching test, a total amount of the eluviated elements was very small, it considered the environment-friendly material. As a result of the field test, considerable reduction of the coefficient of permeability at the hydraulic layer was confirmed, and it could secure that the coefficient of permeability showed a lower than standard value of $10^{-5}cm/sec$.
This study aims to develop a bio-grouting material in a powder form like cement. Sand gel samples were produced with the ratio of sodium silicate No.3 to water (50 : 50, 35 : 65, 20 : 80), and the ratio of cement to bio-grouting material (100 : 0, 90 : 10, 70 : 30) to select a mixing ratio of bio-grouting, respectively, and then analyzed the geltime over time. The uniaxial compressive strength was evaluated to select and suggest a mixing ratio optimized for construction conditions. The indoor test reveals that preferred geltime and uniaxial compressive strength is obtained in 35 : 65 with respect to the ratio of sodium silicate No.3 to water, and 90 : 10 with respect to the ratio of cement to bio-grouting material to demonstrate best optimal mixing ratios.
The effect of heat treatment and acid leaching of siliceous mudstone on the purity of silica precursors, such as sodium silicate and silicic acid, was studied. As well as the temperatures for the heat treatment of siliceous mudstone, the concentrations of hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid were varied to achieve the highest content of silicon in the precursors while minimizing energy and chemical consumption. It was found that the optimum conditions were achieved at the heat treatment temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ and hydrochloric acid of 1.56 M. The relative concentrations of silicon in the synthesized sodium silicate and silicic acid were as high as 99.2 and 99.5%, respectively.
Every concrete structure should continue to perform its intended functions such as to maintain the required strength and durability during its lifetime. Deterioration of the concrete structure, however, occurs more progressively from the outside of the concrete exposed to severe conditions. Main deteriorations in concrete structures result from carbonation, chloride ion attack and frost attack. Concrete can therefore be more durable by applying surface protection to increase its durability using impregnants, which are normally classified into two large groups in polymeric and silicate materials. Concrete impregnants are composed of silanes and alkali silicates (sodium, potassium and lithium silicate). Thus, this study is concerned with elevating the carbonation and Cl- penetration resistance of concrete structures by applying alkali silicate hydrophilic impregnants including lithium and potassium silicates. From the experimental test results, lithium and potassium silicates produced a good improvement in carbonation resistance and are expected to be used as hydrophilic impregnants of concrete structures.

In this study a series of bench scale test are conducted to increase the undrained shear strength of clayey soils using by Electro-kinetic injection stabilization method. The sodium silicate was injected in anode reservoir and its concentration was changed with 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500mM for configuration of applicability of Electro-kinetic injection stabilization method. Also, the treatment time and electric gradient was changed to acquire the optical influence factors. For increasing the shear strength to maximum values, the calcium chloride and aluminium hydroxide, which concentration was changed with 50, 250, 500, 750, 1000mM, were added at anode reservoir for 5 days after the treatment of sodium silicate in 5 days as the 2nd additives. The test of results in determination of sodium silicate concentration show that the undrained shear strength at each point had a tendency to converge into a constant value when the concentration of sodium silicate came to 1000mM and above. The maximum shear strength increasement was 800% compared with initial value. After a series of test, the electric gradient and treatment time for application of electric fielld were 1V/cm and 6 days. In case of 2nd additives test, the concentration for maximum shear strength is 250mM in all additives and the effects of shear strength improvement was developed approximately 20~30% in comparison to addition of single injection material.
Silicate used as laundry detergent builder was good for pH buffering capacity and solubility but calcium-ion binding capacity and surfactant adsorption ability were lower. As $SiO_2/Na_2O$ molar ratio became higher, pH buffering capacity and ion exchange ability were lower and surfactant adsorption ability was little higher. Anionic surfactant LAS (linear alkylbenzene sulphonate), nonionic surfactant LA-9 (lauryl alcohol EO-9) were used to investigate the detergency performance. Zeolite was better than sodium silicate in detergency performance. In case of LAS, detergency performance was good when $SiO_2/Na_2O$ molar ratio was lower. In case of LA-9, detergency performance was similar without discrimination of molar ratio of $SiO_2/Na_2O$.
