Purpose : Urine collection using a sterile adhesive bag for urinalysis has been used commonly in infants and young children. However, this method has had some drawbacks. So, this study was performed to evaluate the usage of disposable diapers as a substitute for the routine urine collection method. Methods : 60 mL of self voided fresh urine was collected from 99 patients. Half of the urine was poured on the disposable diapers which did not contain absorbent gel beads. After 1 hr, we obtained the urine samples(extracted urine) by compressing the wet diapers using a 50 ml syringe. Routine, microscopic and biochemical analyses were performed on the other half of fresh urine and extracted urine. Then we compared each result by correlative analysis. Results : 198 samples from 99 patients were evaluated. The results of routine urinalysis except WBC and biochemical urinalysis showed a significant correlation between the two groups(P<0.05). The relative coefficients of urine SG, pH, glucose, protein, blood and leukocytes between the two groups were 0.964, 0.938, 0.977, 0.956, 0.931 and 0.738, respectively. Those of urinary sodium, potassium, chloride and creatinine were 0.997, 0.998, 0.995 and 0.998, respectively Microscopic examinations showed lower relative coefficients than the other results, 0.740 for RBC and 0.602 for WBC, but these were still significant(P<0.05). Conclusion : The results of the urine analysis with extracted urine from diapers correlates well with that of fresh urine. This new method is very helpful and can be used as an alternative of urine collection, especially for infants and young children. (J Korean Soc Pediatr Nephrol 2005;9:128-136)

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical value of bicarbonate gap (BG) in acute gastroenteritis by comparison of clinical manifestations and laboratory findings. Methods : We retrospectively analyzed 135 patients who had acute gastroenteritis. We classified them into two groups: $BG{\leq}-5$ (group A), BG>-5 (group B). We made a comparative study for clinical manifestations, serum electrolyte, albumin, protein, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, anion gap (AG), delta anion gap (${\Delta}AG$) and delta bicarbonate (${\Delta}HCO_3{^-}$) between the two groups. Results : The duration of hospitalization and diarrhea was significantly longer in group A than group B. In laboratory findings, serum sodium, serum total $CO_2$, total protein, $AG_{corrected}$ and ${\Delta}AG$ were lower in group A than group B. ${\Delta}HCO_3{^-}$ and chloride were higher in group A than group B. Conclusion : BG may be a sensitive predictor enough to access the severity of acute gastroenteritis.
The Haman-Gunbuk mineralized area is located within the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin along the southeastern part of the Korean peninsula. Major ore minerals, magnetite, scheelite, molybdenite and chalcopyrite, together with base-metal sulfides and minor sulfosalts, occur in fissure-filling tourmaline, quartz and carbonates veins contained within Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanic rocks anu/or granodiorite (118{\pm}$3.0 Ma). The ore and gangue mineral paragenesis can be divided into three distinct stages: Stage 1, tourmaline+quartz+Fe-Cu ore mineralization; Stage II, quartz+sulfides+sulfosalts+carbonates; Stage 111, barren calcite. Earliest fluids are recorded in stage I and early por-tions of stage II veins as hypersaline (35~70 equiv. wt.% NaCl+KCl) and vapor-rich inclusions which homogenize from ~30$0^{\circ}C$ to $\geq$50$0^{\circ}C$. The high-salinity fluids are complex chloride brines with significant concentrations of sodium, potassium, iron, copper, and sulfur, though sulfide minerals are not associated with the early mineral assemblage produced by this fluid. Later solutions circulated through newly formed fractures and reopened veins, and are recorded as lower-salinity(less than ~20 equiv. wt.% NaCl) fluid inclusions which homogenize primarily from ~200 to 40$0^{\circ}C$. The oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of fluid in the Haman-Gunbuk hydrothermal system represents a progressive shift from magmatic-hydrothermal dominance during early mineralization stage toward meteoric-hydrothermal dominance during late mineralization stage. The earliest hydrothermal fiuids to circu-late within the granodiorite stock localiring the ore body at Haman-Gunbuk could have exsolved from the crystal-lizing magma and unmixed into hypersaline liquid and $H_2O$-NaCl vapor. As these magmatic fluids moved throughfractures, tourmaline and early Fe, W, Mo, Cu ore mineralization occurred without concomitant deposition of othersulfides and sulfosalts. Later solutions of dominantly meteoric origin progressively formed hypogene copper and base-metal sulfides, and sulfosalt mineralization.

This study was carried out to examine the stability of $Na_2CO_3-H_2O_2$ carbonate solution with aging time in the dissolving solution after oxidative dissolution of U by a carbonate solution, the Cs/Re filtrate after selective precipitation of Cs and Re (as a surrogate for Tc), and the acidification filtrate after precipitation of U by acidification, respectively. The compositions of dissolving solution were not changed with ageing time, and the selective precipitation of Re and Cs was also not affected without regard to the aging time of dissolving solution. The successive removal of Cs and Re from a carbonate dissolving solution was possible. However, the recovery yield of U by acidification was decreased with increasing the aging time of the dissolving solution and the Cs/Re-filtrate, respectively, because U was converted from the uranyl peroxocarbonato complex to the uranyltricarbonate in the solution aged for a long time. Accordingly, it is effective that a dissolving solution and a Cs/Re filtrate are treated within the aging of 7 days, respectively, in order to recover U more than 99%. On the other hand, the recovery of U was carried out in order of the oxidative dissolution of U selective precipitation of Re and Cs precipitation of U by acidification. Almost all of U and a part of FP were co-dissolved in oxidative dissolution step. Over 99% of Re and Cs from the FP co-dissolved with U could be removed by a TPPCl (tetraphenylphosphonium chloride) and a NaTPB (sodium tetraphenylborate), respectively. U was precipitated nearly 100% by acidification to pH 4. Therefore, it was confirmed that the validity of recovery of U by precipitation methods from a SF (spent fuel) in the $Na_2CO_3-H_2O_2$ solution.
Red pepper paste were prepared by using various raw materials such as rice, glutinous rice, polished barley, polished wheat and corn powder, and their chemical compositions including reducing sugar, amino-N and ethanol were analyzed during the period of aging in order to elucidate effects of these starchy materials on the compositions and qualities of the products. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1) Koji of these materials were manufactured respectively by inoculating a strain of Asporyzae and their activities of protease and saccharifying amylase were determined. Wheat koji was found to have the highest level of protease activity among the koji, while glutinous rice koji had the strongest amylase activity. 2) Contents of moisture, crude protein, crude fat, and sodium chloride in the red pepper pastes were not changed significantly, however total sugar content was decreased during the period of aging. 3) After 60 days of aging, the highest amount (160mg%) amino nitrogen was detected in the red pepper paste of polished wheat, but higher levels of reducing sugar and ethanol contents were detected in that of glutinous rice. 4) Amino acids in the products were analyzed after 60 days of aging: a) Total 17 amino acids were detected. b) Free amino acid ratio to total amino acid content was approximately 35 percent in average. c) Free glutamic acid was higher than any other free amino acid In the amount and free ratio, but free methionine was lower. d) Lysine content was relatively high, while histidine and glycine were detected in trace. 5) Sensory tests including color, odor and taste on the products resulted in the highest mark for the red pepper paste of glutinous rice but in the lowest mark for that of corn powder.
To investigate the characteristics of anodic film formed on metals and the reactivities of organic inhibitor Di-iso-butylnitrosoamine (DBNA) in sea water. the cathodic reactions of anodic film formed on metals were carried out by using the potential drop method and galvanostatic method at $25^{\circ}C$. The investigated results are as follows: The anodic films formed on aluminum and zinc in 60mM $DBNA+9\%_{\circ}$ sea water did not show-changes of potential drop. However, those formed on lead and copper were reasonable electrodes. It was concluded that cathodic reactivities of proton through the anodic film in aqueous solution were constant without regard to the kinds of metals used with anodic film electrode at operated current density ranges, because the values of transition time obtained in 0.5M sodium chloride solution and $9\%_{\circ}$ sea water nearly coincided. The values of transition time of the first step by the galvanostatic method were obtained from 0.22 to 1.40 sec ranges far less than one minute. Therefore, it suggested that cathodic reactions of proton through the anodic film were mainly controlled by diffusion/adsorption process. The differences of between $\tau_{1}/4$ in $9\%_{\circ}$ sea water and $\tau_{1}/4$ in 60mM $DBNA+9\%_{\circ}$ sea water, and between $E_{1}/4$ in sea water and $E_{1}/4$ in 60mM $DBNA+9\%_{\circ}$ sea water at the constant current density with $1.9\times10^{-4}\sim5.0{\times}10^{-6}\;amp/cm^2$ were 0.06 sec and 0.53 v. respectively and cathodic reactions of DBNA on the anodic film electrodes were chiefly controlled by adsorption/diffusion process. The reason that adsorption quantities of proton on anodic film formed on aluminum and zinc in aqueous solutions were much more than those on lead and copper, seems to lie due mostly to the number of porosity produced on anodic film used.

This study was performed to determine the effects of pretreatment (NT: non-treatment, BTS: boiling treatment with 3% sodium chloride, DTG: dipping treatment in glycerol) and drying methods (sun drying, hot air drying, and cold air drying) on the physicochemical properties and antioxidant activities of dried jujube (Zizyphus jujuba Mill.) fruits. Our results show that moisture content is lower (P<0.05) with DTG, and that moisture content is lower with hot air drying compared to other drying methods. The bulk density was highest with BTS. The soluble solids content was highest with DTG. Additionally, the soluble solids content were highest in the following order: hot air drying> cold air drying> sun drying. The titratable acidity of hot air drying was highest of all the drying methods. The titratable acidity was higher with NT and DTG, and the brix and acid ratio of sun drying was higher than other drying methods. Among the drying methods, BTS showed the best browning-retarding effect, whereas boiling treatment affected quality and color. The total polyphenol content from hot air drying and NT or DTG treatment was relatively higher than the content from BTS. The flavonoid content was highest with BTS, and all dried jujube showed relatively high antioxidant activities. The sensory evaluation results indicated that the organoleptic scores for overall preference were higher in the NT and DTG treatment groups. These results suggest that pretreatment and drying methods affect the quality of dried jujube fruit, and show that glycerol treatment with hot air drying can be applied to the production of high quality dried jujube.

Peritoneal dialysis has been widely considered to be the dialytic treatment of choice for acute renal failure in infants and young children, because the technique is simple, safe and easily adapted for these patients. Also peritoneal dialysis in infants might have more effective ultrafiltration and clearance than in adults. In certain circumstances associated with hemodynamic instability, ordinary volume peritoneal dialysis(30-50 ml/kg body weight per exchange) or hemodialysis may not be suitable unfortunately. But frequent cycled, low volume, high concentration peritoneal dialysis may be more available to manage the hemodynamically untable acute renal failure of newborns and infants. Seven infants underwent peritoneal dialysis for hemodynamically unstable acute renal failure with low exchange volume($14.2{\pm}4.2ml/kg$), short exchange time(30 to 45 minutes) and hypertonic glucose solution(4.25% dextrose). Age was $1.9{\pm}1.3$ months and body weight was $4.6{\pm}1.6kg $. Etiology of acute renal failure was secondary to sepsis with or without shock(5 cases) and postcardiac operation(2 cases). Catheter was inserted percutaneously with pigtail catheter or Tenkhoff catheter by Seldinger method. Dialysate was commercially obtained Peritosol which contained sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, lactate and calcium. Net ultrafiltration(ml/min) showed no difference between low volume dialysis and control($0.27{\pm}0.09$ versus $0.29{\pm}0.09$) Blood BUN decreased from $95.7{\pm}37.5$ to $75.7{\pm}25.9mg/dl$ and blood pH increased from $7.122{\pm}0.048$ to $7.326{\pm}0.063$ after 24 hours of peritoneal dialysis. We experienced hyperglycemia which were controlled by insulin(2 episodes), leakage at the exit site(2), mild hyponatremia(1) and Escherichia coli peritonitis(1). Two children of low volume dialysis died despite the treatment. In our experience, low volume and high concentration peritoneal dialysis with frequent exchange may have sufficient ultrafiltration and clearance without significant complications in the certain risked acute renal failure of infants.

Sarine scrap usually comprises about $40\%$ of the raw fish in processing. The purpose of this study is to establish the desirable methods for proteinaceous materials from the sardine scrap through autolysis or enzymatic digestion and to convert them into useful by-products such as sardine sauce. Sardine scrap was chopped and mixed with equal weight of water, and be hydrolyzed them by autolysis and/or by addition of commercial proteolytic enzyme and various concentrations of sodium chloride. The optimal conditions for hydrolysis of sardine scrap were revealed in temperature at $55^{\circ}C$ and 4 hours digestion with bromelain($0.4\%$) and commercial complex enzyme ($6.0\%$), and those conditions were also applicated in autolysis. The maximum hydrolyzing rate of protein and released amino nitrogen were $82.5\%,\;5.2\%$ through autolysis, $84.3\%,\;5.8\%$ by bromelain digestion and $92.5\%,\;5.9\%$ by complex enzyme, respectively. In the products prepared from sardine scrap through autolysis or bromelain digestion, hypoxanthine was dominant, as $17.4 {\mu}mole/g$, dry matter for autolysis and $16.0 {\mu}mole/g$, dry matter, for bromelain digestion among the nucleotidcs and their related compounds, respectively. The abundant free amino acids were leucine, glutamic acid, lysnie, valine and alanine. The contents of those amino acids were $51.3\%,\;48.3\%$ of the total free amino acids, respectively. And the contents of 5'-IMP and TMAO were negligible but total creatinine was developed in value from $9.2\%\;to\;10\%$ of total extracted nitrogen. The flavor of sardine sauce prepared from sardine scrap by autolysis or enzyme digestion were not inferior to that of traditional Korean soy sauce by sensory evaluation.
The taste compounds in low salted and fermented damsel fish, Chromis notatus, substitute lactic acid, sorbitol and ethyl alcohol for sodium chloride and fatty acid composition were analysed during fermentation. The best organoleptic result was obtained after 60 days fermentation. Volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) was increased significantly until 10 days fermentation period but low salted and fermented products ($8\%\;and\;10\%$ salted) gave lower VBN value than that of $20\%$ salted after 85 days fermentation. Amino nitrogen also increased rapidly after 10 days fermentation and slowed down up to 60 days but it was decreased after 85 days. The abundant amino acids in raw damsel fish were lysine, taurine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, proline and alanine and those were consisted of $58.8\%$ of the total free amino acids but arginine and tyrosine were trace in content. After 60 days fermentation, lysine, glutamic acid, alanine, leucine, aspartic acid and valine were dominant which marked $58{\sim}71\%$ of the total free amino acids but taurine was not detected. In raw ingredients, IMP was abundant which marked $18.6{\mu}mole/g$ while in fermented sample, hypoxanthine was predominant but ATP and ADP were not detected. During fermentation TMA was increased but TMAO was decreased which marked only trace after 60 days. Total creatinine was rapidly increased after 10 days but notable change was not showed after 60 days fermentation. The major fatty acids of total lipid in raw and fermented damsel fish were 16:0, 18:1, 16:1, 22:6 and 20:5 in order.
