The Effects of University Woman Students' socio-cultural attitudes to appearance on their body image and satisfaction of their physical bodies (여대생의 미모에 대한 사회문화적 태도가 신체이미지와 만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • The author of this study would like to consider the influence that socio-cultural attitudes to the appearance offemale college students have on body image and satisfaction. The results of this study were as follows: 1. According to the result of the analysis of the relevant factors of socio-cultural attitudes on outward appearance of women college students, three factors which are named "Internalization", "Awareness" and "Non-confirmity" have been drawn out: 2. According to the result of the factor analysis for the evaluation of the behavioral figure images of women college students, three factors which are named "Figure Management", "Weight Management" and "Figure Valuation" have been drawn out: 3. Socio-cultural attitudes to appearance have correlation with body image, BMI and self-satisfaction of body and appearance: 4. According to consideration of the result of the study of the Influence that socio-cultural attitudes to the appearance have on physical satisfactionof each physical part, it is showed that they have managed their physical weight according to the satisfaction degree of weight and other circumference items: 5. Socio-cultural attitudes to appearance have high correlation with appearance management and weight management.

A Study about the Experienced Problems and the Demands of Counseling of the Adolescents according to the Physical, Psychological, Sexual and the Socio-cultural Problem Categories (일부 지역 청소년들의 신체적$\cdot$정신적$\cdot$성적$\cdot$사회문화적 영역별 문제경험정도와 상담의 필요성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify physical. psychological. sexual and socio-cultural problems that the adolescents have experienced and to assess the demands of counseling about the experienced problems. The design of this study was descriptive-survery study. The sample size was 601 middle and high school students. Data analysis was done by frequencies. Percent. t -test. ANOVA. Pearson correlation coefficiency, stepwise regression and Cronbach's $\alpha$ Score was produced for the reliability of the tool by using the item analysis method. The results was as follows : 1. The distribution of the each item that the adolescents experienced according to the physical, psychalogical. Sexual and Socio-cultural problem Categories was examined. In the physical problem category, the number of items that half and more than half of the adolescents experienced of often or frequently were 10 among all 19 items. In the psychological problem category. 13 item were among all 19 items. In the sexual problem category, 1 item among all 17 items and in the socio-cultural problem category, 10 items were among all 30 items. 2. The distribution of the each items that the adolescents wanted to the counseling according to the physical. psychological. sexual and socio-cultural problem categories was examined. In the physical problem category, the numbers of the items that half and more than half of the adolescents wanted counseling were 1 among all 19 items. In the psychological problem category, the numbers of the items that half and more than half of the adolescents wanted counseling were 2 items among all 19 items. In the sexual problem category, 0 item among all 17 items and in the socio-cultural problem category, 2 items were among all 30 items. 3. In the comparison of the female student and male student about the experienced problems and the demands of counseling according to the physical. psychological. sexual and socio-cultural problem categories. There was a significant difference statistically in all categories between groups(P<.001) 4. In the comparison of high school students and middle school students about the demands of counseling according to the physical. psychological. sexual and socio-cultural problem categories(P<.001). Particulary, grade II of high school students have experienced problems according to the physical. psychological. sexual and socio-cultural problem categories. There was a significant difference statistically in all categories(P<.001). 5. In the correlation between the experienced problem and the demands of counseling according to 4 categories. there was the positive correlation at P<.001 level. 6. The less the satisfaction for family and school life. the more experienced problems according to the physical. psychological. sexual and socio-cultural problem categories. There was a significant difference statistically in all categories(P<.001).

  • We have known that ethno-mathematics is a field of a study that emphasizes the socio-cultural environment in which a person "does" mathematics as stated by D'Ambrosio(Ethno mathematics and its Place in the History and Pedagogy of Mathematics, 1985). Measurement is an important mathematical topic, which leads students to relate math to the eal-world applications, particularly with socio-cultural aspects. The purpose of this article is to review the history of the measurement system in Korea briefly and to adapt the measurement system into real-world problems so that children acquire measurement knowledge in the most natural way.

Elementary School Students' Perceptions of Scientist and Socio-cultural Background towards Science (초등학생들이 생각하는 과학자 이미지와 과학과 관련된 경험 및 배경 조사)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the elementary school students' perceptions of scientist and socio-cultural background towards science. Subjects are 120 ordinary students of elementary school and 75 participators in invention club and science camp for talented students in a metropolitan city. A questionnaire for investigating the students' perceptions and Images about scientist was developed. That contains the items for socio-cultural background and experiences towards science. The results of this study showed that the elementary students think scientist is younger than the previous students thought. But as yet, the representative image of scientist is the neat man with glasses and gown. Also, a majority of elementary students like science, science subject and science classroom, especially experiment activity. They have various experiences related in science.

A Study on the Socio-Cultural Approach to Design History in Korea (사회사적 디자인사 연구를 위한 방법론 모색)

  • This study originates from the following problematic: Can a social history of design provide a useful methodology for the research and education of Korean design? For the understanding of the modes of socio-cultural approach to design, the chapter 2 compares the narrative mode of designer-centered history promulgated under the influence of Nikolaus Pevsner and that of socio-cultural approach advocated by Adrian Forty. The chapter 3 studies the cases of socio-cultural approach to Korean design through the domestic exhibitions like 'Everyday Life, Memory and History,' 'A Glimpse into the Society through Campaigns,' and 'Design Culture in Korea 1910-1960' which attempted the socio-cultural approach to the visual culture of modern/contemporary Korea. In the chapter 4, this study investigates into the meanings and characteristics of socio-cultural approach in the design research and education, End argues for the necessity of the introduction of qualitative research methodology.

Personal and Socio-Cultural Barriers to Cervical Cancer Screening in Iran, Patient and Provider Perceptions: a Qualitative Study

  • Background: Although cervical cancer is preventable and early screening might decrease the associated mortality, challenges faced by the women and health care providers can postpone early detection. This qualitative study aimed to establish patient and provider perceptions about personal and socio-cultural barriers for cervical cancer screening in Mashhad, Iran. Materials and Methods: In the present study, which was conducted in 2012, eighteen participants, who were selected purposefully, participated in individual in-depth, semi-structured interviews, which were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using conventional content analysis and Atlas-Ti software. Results: One theme and two categories were derived from data including: cognitive/behavioral factors (lack of a community-based approach to cervical cancer, lack of awareness, wrong attitude and lack of health seeking behaviors) and socio/cultural issues (socio-cultural invasion, mismatch between tradition, modernity and religious, extra marital relationships and cultural taboos). Conclusions: Providing community based approach education programs and employing social policy are needed for preventing of cervical cancer in Iran.

Public Self-Consciousness, Body Image, & Socio-Cultural Influence on Gender Differences (성별에 따른 공적 자기의식, 신체이미지, 사회문화적 영향의 차이에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine if there were differences in public self-consciousness, body image, and socio-cultural influence between males and females. Six hundred twenty-six adults participated in this study. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test and reliability test were used. The result of this study is as follows. First, compared to males, females had higher scores on appearance orientation(AO), appearance evaluation(AE), and weight occupation(WP). Also females were more dissatisfied with their bodies such as lower body part or middle body part than males. That is, women had lower body image than men. Second, there was not significantly difference in self-esteem between males and females. Third, females had higher scores on public-consciousness than males did. Fourth, compared to males, females were more influenced by socio-cultural factors such as internalization and awareness. Finally, women had more higher scores on appearance behavior management than men. Based on these results, this study would provide more efficient strategies to reduce negative body image, especially in women.

Roles of Socio-cultural Dimensions on Metropolitan Teenagers' Mobile Phone Purchases and Mobile Content Uses (수도권 청소년들의 이동전화 구매와 모바일 콘텐츠 이용에 영향을 미치는 사회 문화적 차원의 역할)

  • Mobile media have become independent media formats in a current media environment. This study explores mobile media uses of metropolitan Korean teenagers focusing on demographic elements and socio-cultural dimensions. The findings of this study show that demographic variables and socio-cultural variables influenced mobile media purchases and mobile content uses. Specifically, demographic variables explain mobile media purchases more, and socio-cultural variables explain mobile content uses of Korean teenagers. Among significant variables, conformity and self demonstration are core elements explaining teenagers' consumer behaviors. These findings could provide implications to both academicians and practitioners.

Effects of Sex Role Attitudes on Body Image and Appearance Management Behavior of Men in their 20s

  • The purpose of this study is to classify men in their 20s by their sex role attitudes, and to study their appearance management behavior and inner characteristic variables such as socio-cultural attitudes on appearance and bodily image, which are expected to influence the appearance management behavior of each classified group. For this, a survey of 393 males in the 20s in Seoul and metropolitan areas was conducted. Factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and F-test were conducted on the data. First, as a result of analysis on sex role attitudes, four groups were categorized: Masculinity, Femininity, Androgyny and Undifferentiation. Second, the analysis of individual variables resulted in appearance management behavior being separated into five categories: Interests in fashion, Proper choice of clothing, Importance of bodily attractiveness, Pursuit for personality and Complementation of physical weaknesses. The socio-cultural attitude on 'appearance' was sub-categorized into Internalization, and Awareness, while 'body image' was divided into Cognitive behavioral and Affective aspects. Regarding differences in socio-cultural attitudes for appearance, body image and metro-sexual lifestyle attitudes, the androgyny group produced the highest scores. Based on these results, it can be concluded that people who take care of their physical appearance, cope effectively with social and circumstantial requirements for happiness and success, and respond flexibly and affirmatively.

The Family Characteristics Affecting the Socio-Cultural Adjustment of North Korean Defectors (가족특성에 따른 새터민의 사회문화적 적응)

  • As the number of North Koreans defectors entering South Korea with their family members increases, it becomes more important to explore the family characteristics that facilitate their adjustment. The data used in the present study was collected from a survey of 195 North Korean defectors. The aim of this study was to investigates how the structural and relational aspects of family influence the socio-cultural adjustment of North Korean defectors. The structural characteristics of family life included whether or not the defectors exited with their family members, whether they were living with family members, and whether they were living with family members under the age of 18. The relational characteristics included family cohesion and adaptability. The study results showed that living with young family members was negatively associated with the social activity restriction problems commonly perceived by North Korean defectors. Family cohesion was also negatively associated with the social activity restriction problems and positively associated with the social isolation problems. The results of this study also showed that family adaptability was not significantly associated with any socio-cultural adjustment problems.
