  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the implications of social welfare workers' understanding of emotional labor and prevention of psychological exhaustion. In order to achieve this goal, I analyzed the effects of the levels of surface acting and deep acting, which are components of emotional labor in social welfare workers in social welfare center, on emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of sense of personal accomplishment which are components of psychological exhaustion. And I empirically analyzed how emotional labor affects psychological exhaustion, when superior support and fellow support as components of social support play a role as moderating variables. Empirical results show that emotional labor affects psychological exhaustion and social support plays a moderating role. Based on these results, theoretical and policy implications and future research directions are presented.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of social workers' emotional labor on non-task behaviors. This study characterizes emotional labor as deep acting and surface acting, non-task behavior as organizational citizenship behavior(OCB) and counterproductive work behavior(CWB). And this study also examines the mediating effect of social workers' emotional dissonance in the relationship between surface acting and non-task behavior, and the moderating effect of senior worker's emotional leadership in the relationship between emotional dissonance and non-task behaviors. The results from this study are as follows. Firstly, social workers' deep acting improves their OCB. Secondly, social workers' surface acting has strong effects on their emotional dissonance, and this emotional dissonance hinders their OCB. In addition, the mediating effect of emotional dissonance is also recognized at this point. Thirdly, senior worker's emotional leadership moderates the relationship between social worker's emotional dissonance and OCB in the sense that emotional leadership is expected to reduce the negative effects of emotional dissonance on OCB. However, the influence of emotional labor on CWB has no statistical significance in this study. Based on these results, detailed theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

The subjects were 192 teachers who worked in kindergartens or child care centers in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Province. Questionnaires, which require self-report by teachers, were used to investigate the emotional support from social network, ego-resiliency, and role conflict. The collected data were analyzed by Pearson's correlation, single and multiple regressions, using SPSS Win 15.0. The results are as follows. (1) Emotional support from social network and ego-resiliency was negatively associated with the role conflict of teachers in kindergartens and day care centers. (2) Emotional support from social network was positively associated with ego-resiliency. (3) Emotional support from social network partly exerted indirect effects on role conflict mediated by ego-resiliency. But direct effect of emotional support from social network on role conflict was more than the indirect effect. These results indicate that a higher level of emotional support from social network is more likely to lower role conflict of teachers.
