  • Using survey data collected from 275 adolescent children of widowed or divorced single mother families, this study investigated the characteristics of family coping resources, including individual, financial, social, and mother-child relational resources and their effects on the psychological wellbeing of these adolescents. After controlling background variables of the family, higher depression among adolescents was associated with low grade point average, mother's high exposure to negative experiences after loss of father, low attachment to mother, and low sense of self-control. Furthermore, higher grade point average, strong attachment to mother, and high self-control in problem solving were factors predicting higher self-esteem of adolescents. Social network resources were not related to the psychological well-being of the adolescents. Discussion included recommendations for future research. Implications for policy and parent-child relations were discussed with a view to enhancing family functioning of adolescents in single-mother families.

This study analyzed the dental implant utilization rate by the National Health Insurance customized DB during the last 5 years. As a result, the utilization rate has been rapidly increasing steeply. The differences by age and sex in the utilization rate of dental implants were explored. The inclusion of a dental implant in the NHI system contributed to improving the dental accessibility of the elderly in Korea. However, a deep discussion is needed whether it is appropriately provided to necessary patients. The utilization rate will increase further in the future. • The promotion of social economy is one of the Korean government's top 100 initiatives. As of August 2019, there are 2,249 certified social enterprises in Korea, showing explosive growth with a 41-fold increase from 2007 when the Social Enterprise Promotion Act was first enacted. Currently, the discussion of the sustainability of social-economic organizations is lively, including the issue of changing the certification system to the registration system. Noting the unusual management structure of social enterprise - seeking both social and economic value, this study identifies factors affecting the performance of social enterprises. The study focuses on an empirical investigation of the relationships between characteristics of entrepreneurs' experiences in social economy, strategic competency, the extent to which they seek social value, and their performance. This study is unique in social enterprise research due to its approach to the hybrid management structure of social enterprise with a focus on entrepreneurs' characteristics. Accordingly, this empirical investigation focuses on how social-value seeking mediates the relationships between strategic competency emphasized in typical for-profit enterprises, the characteristics of experiences stressed in social-economic organizations, and the performance of social enterprises. The study findings suggest that, firstly, social entrepreneurs must seek social value as a top priority and improve economic performance using strategic competency to keep pursuing social value, and secondly, social-value seeking must be founded upon entrepreneurs' understanding and experiences in social economy. Practical implications of the study findings include concrete directions for training in social enterprises offered by relevant agencies and the establishment of competency models for current and future entrepreneurs.

  • This study analyzes Korean childcare policy from a caring democracy perspective by using the normative policy analysis method. In the midst of emergent new social risks engendered by low fertility and aging population, feminist scholars proposed a transformative paradigm shift from economic growth to caring oriented development on a macro scale but researches on how this grand principle can be reflected into each policy have hardly been discussed. Thus, this study intends to contribute to such policy-driven discussion by analysing childcare policy on the basis of three normative values of freedom, equality and justice re-interpreted by caring democracy theory. Following are key findings. First, childcare policy does not guarantee public value and social solidarity due to the limitations of free choice from the perspective of freedom. Secondly, gender and class stratification has been worsened in a multiple and more complicated way by adding generational and racial dimensions to the existing gender inequality and vicious circulation of private care is observed from equality perspective. Thirdly, structural inequality aggravated injustice previously accumulated in the past rather than providing flat ground by adjustment.
