Reliability and Validity of the Korean Version of the Cancer Stigma Scale

  • Purpose: In this study the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the Cancer Stigma Scale (KCSS) was evaluated. Methods: The KCSS was formed through translation and modification of Cataldo Lung Cancer Stigma Scale. The KCSS, Psychological Symptom Inventory (PSI), and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire - Core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) were administered to 247 men and women diagnosed with one of the five major cancers. Construct validity, item convergent and discriminant validity, concurrent validity, known-group validity, and internal consistency reliability of the KCSS were evaluated. Results: Exploratory factor analysis supported the construct validity with a six-factor solution; that explained 65.7% of the total variance. The six-factor model was validated by confirmatory factor analysis (Q (${\chi}^2/df$)= 2.28, GFI=.84, AGFI=.81, NFI=.80, TLI=.86, RMR=.03, and RMSEA=.07). Concurrent validity was demonstrated with the QLQ-C30 (global: r=-.44; functional: r=-.19; symptom: r=.42). The KCSS had known-group validity. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the 24 items was .89. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the 24-item KCSS has relatively acceptable reliability and validity and can be used in clinical research to assess cancer stigma and its impacts on health-related quality of life in Korean cancer patients.

한국인의 음식인지도 : 맛과 영양에 대한 조사 (The Perceptions of Food in Korea : An Investigation of Taste and Nutrition)

  • The present study investigated the perceptions of food adopted by Koreans using the characteristics of taste and nutrition. Two hundred and nine Korean subjects were surveyed including University students and adults from many diverse social backgrounds. The subjects sorted pictures of foods according to two conditions, how tasty and then how nutritions they thought the foods were using the Q-method. These pictures included two sets, one for individual food items and the second depicting typical Korean meals, yielding a total of four conditions, This methodology effectively addressed any language barrier as pictures and words in both Korean and English were used. It was an effective tool for allowing the identification of perceptual structures and indicating how prevalent they were across samples. The data were factor analysed and the resulting factor scores interpreted. Meat was regarded positively in all four conditions. Individual sweet foods were preferred by younger subjects while individual traditional foods were preferred by older subjects. Traditional Korean meals were also favoured while processed meals were not. Nutritionally, proteins were more valued than carbohydrates, fibre and vitamins. Meals that contained protein and were regarded as filling and sustaining were regarded positively. The implications for nutrition education were discussed.

대형할인점 확산에 대한 공간적 영향 (Spatial effect on the diffusion of discount stores)

  • 본 연구에서는 국내 대형할인점의 확산을 효과적으로 설명하기 위해 기업의 정보와 구매자의 구전으로 확산을 설명하는 Bass모형에 제3의 요소로 공간적 영향력을 고려하였다. 국내 대형할인점의 확산은 확산중심지인 서울경인지역에서 저차중심지인 4개 지역권역으로 확산되는 형태를 보임에 따라 공간적 영향이 중요하게 작용할 것으로 기대된다. 본 연구에서 공간적으로 구분된 시장 A(확산중심지)가 시장 B(저차중심지)에 미치는 영향이 완전히 통제되지 못하는 상황에서 시장 A가 시장 B에 미치는 공간적 영향을 다국가확산모형(multinational diffusion model)을 확장한 공간확산모형(spatial diffusion model)을 이용하여 정의하였다. Bass모형과 공간확산모형의 모수추정을 통해 두 가지 정보전달경로와 관련된 혁신계수와 모방계수로 확산을 설명하는 Bass모형보다 공간확산모형이 국내 대형할인점 확산을 더욱 효과적으로 설명하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 혁신중심지인 서울경인과 4개 지역권역의 소매환경을 나타내는 개념적 거리에 따라 공간확산모형에서 공간적요인의 영향력이 달라질 것이 기대되어 공간확산계수와 소매환경변수간의 상관관계를 살펴보았고, 연구결과 확산중심지에서 저차중심지에 대한 공간적 영향력은 저차중심지의 소매환경이 확산중심지의 소매환경과 유사할수록 크다는 것을 밝혀내었다.

소방공무원의 직무스트레스와 피로수준과의 관련성 (Association Between Job Stress and Fatigue Symptoms Among Fire-Fighting Officials)

  • 본 연구는 소방공무원들의 직무스트레스와 피로수준과의 관련성을 규명하는 것을 목적으로 실시하였다. 조사대상은 D광역시의 5개 소방서에 근무하고 있는 소방공무원 330명을 대상으로 2019년 9월 1일부터 10월 31일까지의 기간 동안에 구조화된 무기명 자기기입식 설문조사를 실시하였다. 연구결과, 조사대상자의 피로수준은 직무스트레스 총점이 높을수록 유의하게 높았으며(p<0.001), 하위영역별로는 업무요구도가 높을수록(p=0.046), 업무의 자율성이 낮을수록(p=0.006), 상사의 지지가 낮을수록(p<0.001), 동료의 지지가 낮을수록(p<0.001) 유의하게 높았다. 조사대상자의 피로수준과 직무스트레스 내용 간의 상관관계를 보면, 피로수준은 직무스트레스 총점(r=0.348, p<0.05) 및 업무의 요구도(r=0.301, p<0.05)와는 유의한 양의 상관관계를 보인 반면, 업무의 자율성(r=-0.306, p<0.05), 상사의 지지(r=-0.340, p<0.05) 및 동료의 지지(r=-0.355, p<0.05)와는 유의한 음의 상관관계를 보였다. 피로수준에 대한 직무스트레스의 관련성을 파악하기 위해 다변량 로지스틱 회귀분석을 실시한 결과, 직무스트레스 총점이 낮은 집단(Q1)에 비해 매우 높은 집단(Q4)에서 「고위험 피로군」에 속할 위험비가 유의하게 상승하였다(ORs=3.03, 95% CI=1.13~8.12). 위와 같은 연구결과는 소방공무원들의 피로수준은 직무스트레스와 유의한 관련성이 있음을 시사하고 있다. 따라서 직장에서의 직무스트레스 요인들을 줄일 수 있는 구체적인 방안이 마련될 필요가 있다고 생각된다.

S100A12 and RAGE Expression in Human Bladder Transitional Cell Carcinoma: a Role for the Ligand/RAGE Axis in Tumor Progression?

  • Background: Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) and prostate cancer are the most frequent cancers in the male genitourinary tract. Measurement of biological biomarkers may facilitate clinical monitoring and aid early diagnosis of TCC. The aim of the present investigation was to detect the mRNA levels of S100A12 and RAGE (receptor for advanced glycation end products) in patients suffering from bladder TCC. Materials and Methods: To explore the involvement of S100A12 and RAGE genes, total RNA was harvested from cancer tissues and samples obtained from normal non-tumorized urothelium of the same patients. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) was subsequently employed to determine the mRNA levels of S100A12 and RAGE. Results: The results showed that mRNA expression of S100A12 and RAGE was significantly up-regulated in the cancer tissue. Conclusions: According to the results presented in the current study, mRNA expression of S100A12 and RAGE might be as a useful biomarker for TCC. Therefore, this ligand-receptor axis possibly plays important roles in the development of TCC and may serve either as an early diagnostic marker or as a key factor in monitoring of response to treatment. More research is required concerning inhibition of the S100A12-RAGE axis in different cancer models.

Distribution and synchronized massive flowering of Sasa borealis in the forests of Korean National Parks

  • Background: Genus Sasa, dwarf bamboos, are considered to be species that lower biodiversity in the temperate forests of East Asia. Although they have a long interval, they, the monocarpic species, have a unique characteristic of large-scale synchronized flowering. Therefore, once they have flowered and then declined, it may be an opportunity for suppressed surrounding species. A previous study reported that Sasa borealis showed specialized flowering nationwide with a peak in 2015. However, this was based on data from a social network service and field survey at Mt. Jeombong. Therefore, we investigated S. borealis in the forests of five national parks in order to determine whether this rare synchronized flowering occurred nationwide, as well as its spatial distribution. Results: We found a total of 436 patches under the closed canopy of Quercus mongolica-dominated deciduous forests in the surveyed transects from the five national parks. Of these patches, 75% occupied a whole slope area, resulting in an enormous area. The patch area tended to be larger in the southern parks. Half (219 patches) of the patches flowered massively. Among them, 76% bloomed in 2015, which was consistent with the results of the previous report. The flowering rate varied from park to park with that of Mt. Seorak being the highest. The culms of the flowering patches were significantly taller (F = 93.640, p < 0.000) and thicker (F = 61.172, p < 0.000). Following the event, the culms of the flowering patches declined, providing a good opportunity for the suppressed plant species. The concurrent massive flowering of the mature patches was believed to be triggered by some stress such as a spring drought. Conclusion: We confirmed that the rare synchronized flowering of S. borealis occurred with a peak in 2015 nationwide. In addition, we explored that S. borealis not only monopolized an enormous area, but also dominated the floors of the late-successional Q. mongolica-dominated deciduous forests. This presents a major problem for Korean forests. As it declined simultaneously after flowering, there are both possibilities of forest regeneration or resettlement of S. borealis by massively produced seeds.

맥문동 열수 추출물이 Poly I:C를 처리한 폐암세포주의 사멸 및 염증성 사이토카인 발현에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Liriope muscari Water Extracts on the Cell Death and Inflammatory Cytokine Expression of Poly I:C-treated Lung Carcinoma Cells)

  • Objectives : Virus infection through the respiratory tract causes various inflammatory diseases such as pneumonia, cystic fibrosis, and obstructive pulmonary disease, causing enormous social damage. Therefore, it is very important to develop a treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. In this study, we investigated the effect of water extracts of Liriope muscari (WELM), known to improve lung function, on the inflammatory response of lung carcinoma cell line A549 cells induced by the viral double stranded RNA mimetic Polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (Poly I:C). Methods : The cell viability by WELM treatment was analyzed using MTS assay in A549 cells. After inducing an inflammatory response to WELM-treated A549 cells with Poly I:C, the degree of apoptosis was confirmed through bright field microscopy. Interferon beta (IFN-β) mRNA expression level in A549 cells was analyzed by quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR). Results : WELM treatment has no significant effect on cell viability of A549 cells. We confirmed that pre-treatment of WELM effectively reduces the Poly I:C-induced apoptotic cell death in A549 cells. In addition, it was confirmed that the mRNA expression level of IFN-β, a pro-inflammatory cytokine increased by Poly I:C treatment, was significantly suppressed by WELM treatment in A549 cells. Conclusions : These results provide the evidence that WELM is effective at inhibiting inflammation on respiratory viral infections and suggest that Liriope muscari might be a valuable natural substance in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases.

Production of Mono-Hydroxylated Derivatives of Terpinen-4-ol by Bacterial CYP102A1 Enzymes

  • CYP102A1 from Bacillus megaterium is an important enzyme in biotechnology, because engineered CYP102A1 enzymes can react with diverse substrates and produce human cytochrome P450-like metabolites. Therefore, CYP102A1 can be applied to drug metabolite production. Terpinen-4-ol is a cyclic monoterpene and the primary component of essential tea tree oil. Terpinen-4-ol was known for therapeutic effects, including antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory. Because terpenes are natural compounds, examining novel terpenes and investigating the therapeutic effects of terpenes represent responses to social demands for eco-friendly compounds. In this study, we investigated the catalytic activity of engineered CYP102A1 on terpinen-4-ol. Among CYP102A1 mutants tested here, the R47L/F81I/F87V/E143G/L188Q/N213S/E267V mutant showed the highest activity to terpinen-4-ol. Two major metabolites of terpinen-4-ol were generated by engineered CYP102A1. Characterization of major metabolites was confirmed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), gas chromatography-MS, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). Based on the LC-MS results, the difference in mass-to-charge ratio of an ion (m/z) between terpinen-4-ol and its major metabolites was 16. One major metabolite was defined as 1,4-dihydroxyp-menth-2-ene by NMR. Given these results, we speculate that another major metabolite is also a mono-hydroxylated product. Taken together, we suggest that CYP102A1 can be applied to make novel terpene derivatives.

유배우 취업모의 사회적 역할의 질과 건강에 대한 구조모형 (A Structural Equation Modeling on Quality of Social Roles and Health for Married Working Mothers)

  • 본 연구는 유배우 취업모의 배우자, 부모, 직업 역할의 질에 영향을 주는 요인을 파악하고, 역할의 질과 건강에 대한 구조모형을 제시하기 위해 시도되었다. 이러한 목적을 위해 수도권에 거주하는 맞벌이 부부가운데 자녀가 있는 여성 342명을 대상으로 몇가지 일반적 특성과 역할의 질은 Park et al.(1999)의 도구를 일부 수정하여 배우자 역할의 질. 부모 역할의 질. 직업 역할의 질 등을 측정하였고. Rosenburg(1965)의 척도를 활용하여 자아존중감을 측정하였으며. Ware & Sherborne (1992)의 SF-36을 이용하여 건강수준 등에 관한 자료를 수집하였으며, 이 도구들의 신뢰도는 모두 Cronbach alpha<.80으로 신뢰할 만한 수준이었다. 수집된 자료를 통하여 가설모형을 수정한 후에 다음과 같은 연구결과를 얻었다. 배우자 역할의 질이 높을수록 자아존중감이 높을 것이다라는 가설은 기각되었고, 부모 역할의 질이 높을수록 자아존중감이 높았으며(r=.42. p<.001). 직업 역할의 질이 높을수록 자아존중감이 높을 것이라는 가설도 경로계수 r=.37로 통계적으로 유의하였다(P<0.001). 배우자 역할의 질이 높을수록 건강수준도 좋았으며 (r= .14. p<.05). 직업 역할의 질이 높을수록 건강수준이 좋았지만(r=.16. p<0.10). 부모역할의 질이 건강에 미치는 직접적인 효과는 유의하지 않았다. 부모 역할의 질이 자아존중감을 통해 건강수준에 간접적으로 미치는 효과는 0.11이며 통계적으로 유의하였고. 직업 역할의 질도 0.26으로 자아존중감을 통한 간접효과가 있었다. 자아존중감에 가장 큰 영향을 주는 것은 부모역할의 질이었고. 건강수준에 대해서는 자아존중감과 직업역할의 질이 비교적 큰 효과를 지니고 있었다. 자아존중감은 역할의 질이 건강수준에 영향을 주는 것에 대한 매개변수로서 역할을 할 뿐 아니라 직접적인 효과도 지니고 있다고 할 수 있다. 부모. 직업역할의 질에 의해 자아존중감의 43%가 설명되며, 건강수준은 배우자, 부모, 직업역할의 질과 자아존중감에 의해 21%가 설명되었다. 이 구조모형의 전반적 부합지수는 Chi-square 0.58(P<0.75), GFI= 1.00. AGFI=0.99. NFI= 1.00, NNFI = 1.02, RMR=0.0072 등으로 이 모형이 경험적 자료에 의해 매우 잘 뒷받침되고 있음을 알 수 있다.

장애아동을 위한 자기결정 프로그램의 효과성에 관한 메타분석연구 (Meta-Analysis on the Effect of Self-Determination Group Program for Children with Disabilities)

  • 본 연구에서는 최근 국내에서 확산되고 있는 장애아동을 위한 자기결정 집단프로그램의 효과크기를 통합하여 제시하고, 보다 효과적인 자기결정 집단프로그램의 실천전략을 제시하기 위하여 메타분석을 실시하였다. 자료 수집은 2017년 6월까지 국내에서 발표된 석 박사 학위논문 및 학술지에 게재된 논문 중 메타분석의 대상선정기준에 따라 최종 17편의 논문을 선정하여 분석하였다. 메타분석을 위해서는 CMA(Comprehensive Meta-Analysis) software 2.0을 사용하였다. 연구의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연구문제 1은 '자기결정 집단프로그램의 평균효과크기는 어느 정도인가'이었다. 연구결과, 랜덤효과모형에 따라 자기결정력의 효과크기는 1.695, 사회기술은 1.316로 나타나서 모두 큰 효과크기를 나타내고 있었다. 둘째, 연구문제 2는 '자기결정 집단프로그램은 조절변수에 따라 효과크기가 다른가?' 이었다 통계적으로 유의미한 변수는 '자기결정력'에 있어서 연령, 장애유형, 총 횟수, 주당 횟수, 1회당 시간, 진행자 전공 등이었다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 본 연구의 결과와 함의를 제언하였다.
