The Social Effects of Higher Education Policy in South Korea: The Rise of the "Pig Mum" phenomenon

  • The contemporary educational system in South Korea is built on high-stakes standardised tests, a manifestation of the national project of social reconstruction and reform. One recent outcome is the emergence of an unfamiliar yet ubiquitous phenomenon: the "pig mum"; a Korean parent who is fully involved in organising, scheduling and managing the educational process from primary to secondary school for a group of children in a neighbourhood. Based on a quasimixed method utilizing a survey of a group of students and parents, this pilot study explores the "pig mum" phenomenon and its linkage to education policy. The authors conclude that the current educational policy fails to achieve the ideals it professes to value. This creates deep and negative societal norms that endanger a growing generation of students by creating a parallel private education market environment where "pig mums" thrive.

미혼남녀의 결혼관과 출산 및 자녀관에 따른 출산정책 선호도 분석 (A Primary Study on Preference of Fertility Policies Based on Perspectives of the Marriage and Having a Child)

  • Total fertility rate in South Korea is the lowest in the world. A fertility rate below replacement fertility level will result in serious social problems in the long term. Therefore, it is worthwhile to study a general understanding about the low fertility rate phenomenon and to investigate the effectiveness of fertility policies in order to ameliorate the resulting social problems due to the low fertility rate. This research was a descriptive examination into the low fertility rate phenomenon and an investigation of the needs for fertility potties and their effectiveness. The study subjects were consisted of 769 unmarried people aged from 18 to 40 years old. Data were collected from June to August 2004 and were analyzed by frequencies, mean, and standard deviation. The following results were revealed. First, unmarried people in general had positive perspectives about getting marriaged, giving birth, and being a parent. In addition, the primary cause of low fertility rate was economical difficulties for raising a child. Third, unmarried people thought that the low fertility rate phenomenon resoled in both positive and negative changes in a society. Fourth, policies for economical supports for raising children, establishing social atmosphere for gender equality, and trustful public educational systems were the political alternatives that people really wanted for having a child in the future. Effective alternatives for policies and strategies to address the low fertility rate problems are suggested in the discussion section.

문헌 연구를 통해 본 소셜 미디어와 인간의 관계: 사용자, 산업, 사회의 관점에서 (Relationship between Humans and Social Media Explored in Literature: From the Perspectives of Users, Industries, and Society)

  • 소셜 미디어의 등장 이후 20여년이 지난 지금 전 세계 인구의 반 이상, 거의 대부분의 인터넷 사용 인구가 소셜 미디어를 사용하는 시대가 되었다. 많은 사람에게 소셜 미디어 사용이 일상적 일이 되자 필연적으로 소셜 미디어와 관련된 다양한 사회현상이 나타났고 이에 따라 다수의 연구자가 이러한 현상들을 다양한 관점에서 연구하였다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 연구들을 분석 및 고찰하여 소셜 미디어 현상과 연구들에 대한 이해를 돕고자 하였다. 이를 위해 'Social Media'로 검색된 1,038개의 기존 문헌들을 대상으로 이들이 어떤 주제를 어떻게 다루고 있는지 살펴보고 소셜 미디어 현상 및 연구 경향에 대한 종합적 이해를 제공하고자 했다. 나아가 Ihde(1990)의 기술과 인간의 관계를 문헌들이 다루고 있는 주제에 적용하여 소셜 미디어와 인간이 어떠한 관계로 발전해 왔는지 고찰하였다. 아울러 이 관계에 기반하여 기존 연구들이 채용한 소셜 미디어에 대한 관점을 해석하고 향후 연구 방향에 대해 제언하였다.

현대 남성복식에 나타난 Borderless현상 (Borderless Phenomenon in Modern Men's Fashion)

  • This study looks upon the borderless phenomenon of genres and at the disintegration of boundaries in fashion, the current 'borderless trend', and analyze modern men's fashion having borderless phenomenon under social changes and disclose current men's fashion. The borderless phenomenon of men's fashion declines traditional image of gender and expresses modern men's images strongly in accordance with social changes: Thus, in modern days, men's images have changed from muscular men having show-off and superiority to women-like men having pearly skin and slender figure. Men's fashion also looked for feminization to let men like make-up, beauty salon, cosmetic surgery and women-like hair style, etc. Men have been also given women's sexy and sensual beauty to put on innerwear as an outerwearization. The Influx and mixing of mutually different cultures is expressed in Hippie, Ethnic, Oriental trends. Mutually opposing country's factors mix so that a new culture is established. Also, the sharing of fashions amongst younger and older generation has occurred for reasons that are similar to the reasons above.

Random Generation of the Social Network with Several Communities

  • A community of the social network refers to the subset of nodes linked more densely among them than to others. In this study, we propose a Monte-Carlo method for generating random social unipartite and bipartite networks with two or more communities. Proposed random networks can be used to verify the small world phenomenon of the social networks with several communities.

  • Recently, Korean society is increaseing "1 person family" phenomenon, which is influenced by changing of young peoples' value, aging society and social economic problems. Increase of single households is a result of complex economic, cultural and social factors. It is because as the individual's financial independence increases due to elevated income and education level, the age of marriage is going up and the individualism, which values the individual's value rather than custom, is spreading. Therefore, this new phenomenon will be impact to between social, economic value structure and living space. An increase with small furnitures are also increasing of R&D and marketing plans for 1 person family. Currently, 1 person family is bigger than last decade and that is requiring more suitable and multi-functional furniture for them. However, in Korea furniture companies are more optimization to traditional family size. Thus, this research explore about developing cheap price sofa bed, which is using at narrow area and small place.

소셜네트워크서비스에서 집합적 효능감이 이용자들의 자기노출에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Collective Efficacy on Self-Disclosure in Social Network Services)

  • With the development of information technology, social network services (SNS) such as Facebook and Twitter became popular and many users disclose their personal and sensitive information like private story, photographs and location information through posting and sharing. Despite the privacy concerns in SNSs, individuals continue to disclose their identity online. This phenomenon is called 'privacy paradox'. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of collective efficacy on self-disclosure in SNS context and to explain privacy paradox phenomenon. Drawing upon the communication privacy management theory, research model was developed and empirically tested with cross-sectional data from 306 individuals. Results revealed that collective efficacy has a direct positive effect on self-disclosure while privacy risk is negatively related to self-disclosure. However, privacy concern is not directly related to self-disclosure. The relationship between privacy concern and self-disclosure was moderated by collective efficacy.

  • "Brokeback Mountain" deals with the love story between two homosexuals named Ennis and Jack. They never do use the word 'homosexual' but instead 'love.' They hide their love into the closet. And they conform to socially constructed gender roles. It is because they recognize that social order has punished the homosexuals severely through history. Especially, Ennis fears the homophobic heterosexual gaze. Through his paranoia, this article examines the conventional contradictory social order causing by the tragic story that is the homosexual "closet phenomenon." Such a phenomenon has resulted from the traditional patriarchal family system that is the central unit of society. Conventionally, patriarchy consists of a dominant male and non-dominant female system, based on force. Sexuality has been constructed, experienced, and understood in culturally and historically specific ways. Homosexuality has been imaged conventionally as a female disguised as a man. As such, homosexuality would violate and break such a constructed system that keeps the sexual hierarchy through male dominant construction. As homosexual, ironically with macho gender personas, Ennis and Jack are social outsiders. Through this story, Proulx suggests the conventional fixed social order is contradictory and, therefore forces the readers to re-consider the world and ponder about the future.

한류(韓流) 현상에 중국 신세대 패션에 미친 영향 분석 (The Analysis of the Effects of Hanliu Phenomenon on the Chinese Young Generation′s Fashion Style)

  • The purpose of this theses is to review Hanliu phenomenon, a kind of social and cultural phenomenon, in China around A. D. 2000 in the view of the culture-diffusion theory, and analyze its effect to the fashion style of the new young generation of China. In this theses, Hanliu phenomenon means the enthusiasm of Asian people for Korean mass cultures such as Korean dramas, pop songs and fashions from late 1990's. This research adopts two kinds of methods for analyzing Hanliu phenomenon: a qualitative research method and a quantitative one. As a qualitative research method, we analyzed Hanliu phenomenon with several sources of documentaries and audio-visual materials on it. As a quantitative research method, we conducted a survey of about 100 university students in Beijing for how they feel of korean culture and fashions. The Hanliu phenomenon leads to the popularity of Korean products and the general Korean cultures. Also, it affected the Chinese young generation so much that the Korean fashion becomes popular among them. Its effects to the fashion styles of Chinese youths can be summarized in three factors as follows. Firstly, the fashions of Korean entertainers such as H.O.T hair style and Hip-hop fashion style are widely imitated. Secondly, the preference of Korean fashion products has been widely increased. The number of stores dealing with Korean fashion products has been increased. Finally, Korean culture and products have actively been imitated in China according to the increased popularity of Korean fashion products.

사회복지사들이 경험한 이직의 맥락과 패턴 (The Context and Pattern of Turnover Social Workers Have Experienced)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 사회복지사들이 경험한 이직의 맥락과 패턴을 파악하고자 하는 것이다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위하여, 연구자들은 7명의 사회복지사들을 대상으로 한 면접을 통해 자료를 수집하고, 수집된 자료를 가지고 맥락-패턴 분석을 실시하였다. 분석과 연구결과는 사례별 맥락-패턴 분석과 전체 사례에 대한 통합 맥락-패턴 분석으로 구성되었다. 개별 사례에 대한 맥락-패턴 분석은 시간(이직 이전/이직 과정/이직 이후) 차원과 수준(경험된 현상/경험의 의미/현상과 의미들이 연결된 맥락) 차원을 교차하여 각 사례의 이직 이전 맥락과 이직 과정의 맥락, 이직 이후의 맥락을 분석하였으며, 전체 과정에서 나타난 패턴을 파악하여 유형화하였다. 또한 각 사례의 맥락과 패턴, 거기에 연결된 현상과 의미들을 통합하여 하나의 맥락-패턴 구조를 구성하였다. 통합된 맥락-패턴 구조는 네 개의 영역들로 구성되었다. 즉, 첫째는 이직 전의 조직, 둘째는 이직 후의 조직, 셋째는 이직 당사자인 사회복지사, 넷째는 사회복지사의 관계망이다. 이러한 연구결과를 토대로 사회복지사의 이직과 관련하여 사회복지조직들이 고려해야 할 사회복지행정의 지침들을 구체적으로 제언하였다.
