  • In this work, the effect of nonwoven support during fabrication of flat sheet membranes via nonsolvent-induced phase separation, was investigated in detail. It was found that dope solutions with low viscosity tend to penetrate through the nonwoven support during phase inversion, resulting in nonhomogeneous membranes. A simple soaking treatment of nonwoven support prevented such unwanted dope penetration, and resulted in membranes with higher water and solvent permeance performance. The dope penetration through nonwoven was more prominent in solutions with low viscosity, and the nonwoven soaking treatment not effective in solutions with high viscosity.

  • Purpose: Iodine has been used for the prevention or management of wound infection as a topical agent. Although iodine was widely used mainly by Betadine$^{(R)}$ and cadexomer iodine, there was no comparative study on the efficacies of dressing methods of iodine. And also it's wound healing effect was not yet clear. The purpose of this study is to compare antibacterial effects and wound healing effects associated with various dressing methods of iodine on infected full thickness skin defect in the mouse. Methods: One full thickness skin defects in the mice (n=60) were developed on the back and left open for twenty-four hours. Sixty mice were divided into four groups : group S (dressing with Betadine$^{(R)}$ soaking, n=15), group T (dressing with Betadine$^{(R)}$ topping, n=15), group I (dressing with Iodosorb$^{(R)}$, n=15), group G (control group, dressing with dry gauze, n=15). The size of the wound defects and the grades of wound healing were evaluated in 4, 7, 10 days, and antibacterial effect was evaluated with restricted zone in Mueller Hinton agar by disk diffusion method. Results: After the wound was left open for twenty-four hours, many Staphylococcus aureus were cultured. The wound defect size was decreased in order of Betadine$^{(R)}$ soaking, Iodosorb$^{(R)}$, Betadine$^{(R)}$ topping and gauze dressing group in all days, but difference among experimental groups was not statistically significant. The grade score of wound healing was increased in order of Betadine$^{(R)}$ soaking, Iodosorb$^{(R)}$, Betadine$^{(R)}$ topping and gauze dressing group, and the difference was statistically significant. Antibacterial effect for S. aureus was increased in order of Iodosorb$^{(R)}$, Betadine$^{(R)}$ soaking, Betadine$^{(R)}$ topping and gauze dressing group, and the difference was statistically significant. Conclusion: Selection of the effective dressing method of iodine for infected wounds remains a controversial decision. According to this study, Iodosorb$^{(R)}$ may be most effective method for antibacterial effect and Betadine$^{(R)}$ soaking may be most effective method for infected wound healing. However, further study is necessary to evaluate the clinical efficacy of dressing methods of iodine and to search for the mechanisms that explain their effects.

  • In this study, the interface soaking effect in InAs/GaAs strained-layer superlattice (SLS) on crystalline phase modulation has been analyzed by the x-ray diffraction (XRD) curve. The strain variation induced by As and/or Sb soaking was determined by the separation angle between the substrate peak and the 0th-order superlattice satellite peak in the XRD spectra. Contrated that the As/InAs soaking arises minor GaAs-like interfacial layer, the Sb/GaSb soaking induces InSb-like one. The Fourier-transformed curves of the Pendellosung interference oscillation shows that the optimum soaking times of As/InAs and Sb/GaSb are 2 sec and 12 sec, at which the highest crystallineity has, respectively. An anomalous twin-peak phenomenon that a satellite peak splits into two peaks was observed in the SLS structure co-soaked by As and Sb at InAs${\rightarrow}$GaSb interfaces. We suggest that it may be resulted from coexistence of two kinds crystalline phases of InAsSb and GaAsSb due to intermixing of In${\leftrightarrow}$Ga and Sb${\leftrightarrow}$As.

  • The effects of seed soaking (8 and 24 hours) and foliar spray of plant growth retardants (daminozide, chlormequat and uniconazole) on growth control in zinnia were investigated. For seed soaking of 'Dream Land Rose', the changes in plant height was not affected by seed soaking time (8 and 24 hours), while it was severely suppressed by high concentration of chemicals tested. An application of $125mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ uniconazole was most effective for plant height suppression. Flowering was promoted by all treatments of chemicals. However, for 'Dream Land Scarlet', plant height control at 24 hours seed soaking showed more effective than 8 hours, and all treatments of chemicals decreased plant height. Uniconazole gave the best result for plant height control. Flowering tended to be hastened by the treatment of chemicals. For foliar spray, plant height was remarkably decreased at high concentration of uniconazole. Flowering was promoted by chlormequat and uniconazole in both 'Dream Land Rose' and 'Dream Land Scarlet'. Also, daminozide decreased number of petals.

  • Soaking of soybeans is usually considered necessary as a part of further processing. However the soaking process causes the loss of soluble solids from soybean. The temperature effect on the leaching rate of soluble solids during soaking of soybeans were determined at temperatures ranging from $10^{\circ}-50^{\circ}C$. Soaking temperature and time were found to greatly influence the content of soluble solids. Solid leaching rate constant was increased with temperature ranging from 10 - 33 mg/min. Overall mass transfer coefficient of $66.7\;mg/m^2{\cdot}h$ at $20^{\circ}C$ for Saeal variety was higher as compared with other variety (Kwanggyo, Tanyob), and activation energy was found to be 4026 cal/mole. Z-values to reach different degree of leaching showed the descending tendency with increase of solid leaching.

  • This study is part of research to develop the technology for managing major medicinal crops after harvest. We studied the optimal germination conditions of $Cynanchum$ $wilfordii$ (Maxim.) Hemsl. The mean germination time (MGT) of $C.$ $wilfordii$ seeds was higher after soaking for 4 days after storage at $5^{\circ}C$ for 8 weeks, than with germination at $25^{\circ}C$ (3 days). However, the germinative energy (GE) decreased as the number of days soaking increased. The greatest germination rate ($83.3{\pm}8.8%$) was at $25^{\circ}C$ with no soaking of seeds stored at $-20^{\circ}C$ for 8 weeks. Based on these results, we characterized the germination conditions of a major medicinal crop.

  • To investigate the effects of ozonated water concentration and soaking time on adventitious root formation of willow, we studied the efficiency of root cuttings in the revegetation technology of biological engineering of willows. The ozonated water concentrations were used for 5 minutes and 2 hours at 1, 5, 10, 15, 20 ppm by soaking method and then the shoot characteristics were observed. The number and length of adventitious roots were determined. The results indicated that 20 ppm of ozonated water for 2 hours and 1 ppm of ozonated water for 5 minutes resulted in leaves turned wither away and no adventitious root production. Considering the appearance, number and length of the adventitious root, soaking willow cuttings into the ozonated water with dissolved ozone concentration, 5 ppm for 2 hours and 10-15 ppm for 5 minutes were suitable for generating adventitious roots.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of pre-germination soaking on germination in 90 Korean soybean varieties and identification of protein in seeds of 7 soybean varieties. The results obtained that germination rate of soybean seeds was decreased as amount of soaking water and soaking duration in number of days. Difference in germination rate of soybean seeds was significant at three days soaking with water volume of 90 ml. Water absorption of seeds was rapidly increased during the first 6 hours, followed by slow increase until 24 hours and then decreased 24 to 48 hours after soaking soybean varieties for bean sprout soaked the lowest amount of water, while soybean varieties for cooking with rice showed the lowest seed water content. Dissolved oxygen (DO) in soaking water was rapidly decreased during the first 3 hours after soaking, and then slowly decreased. Soybean varieties for vegetable and early maturity showed the lowest DO during early soaking periods, but showed higher DO after 24 hours than other groups of soybean varieties. Electrical conductivity and Total Dissolved Solid (TDS) were increased as number of soaking days increased. Soybean varieties for vegetable and early maturity showed the highest electrical conductivity and TDS, followed by those for sauce and paste or cooking with rice, while showed the lowest electrical conductivity and TDS, varieties for bean sprout. Among 90 Korean soybean varieties, varieties which showed the highest germination rate were Jangsu-kong for sauce and paste, Sobaegnamul-kong for bean sprout, Seonheuk-kong for cooking with rice, Seunnokkong for vegetable and early maturity. On the ather hand varieties which showed the lowest germination rate were Iksan and Songhak-kong for sauce and paste, Pangsa-kong for bean sprout, Jinyeul-kong for cooking with rice, Sinlok-kong for vegetable and early maturity. Germination rates of soybean seeds were higher when electrical conductivity, TDS and water absorption of seeds were lower. There were negative correlations between electrical conductivity, TDS and water absorption of seeds and germination rate, while there were positive correlations among electrical conductivity, TDS and soybean seed weight.

  • In Cubic ZrO2 crystal growth by Skull method, it was examined on effect of homonization on melt as keeping ZrO2(90mol%)-Y2O3(10mol%) melt with 1hr, 2hr, 4hrs, 8hrs, 16hrs, respectively. The optimum homonizing condition in this system was obtained by the examination between quality of grown crystals and soaking time of melt. It was obtained that the lower quality crystal could be produced in the longer holding melt than the optimum soaking time of melt in spite of the supposedly well homonized state, because the melt stability is sensibly dependent on the convective state of melt in skull method (cold crucible process).

  • This study was investigated the quality characteristics and antioxidant of dried Dioscorea bulbifera with various pre-soaking concentrations of oligosaccharide. Dioscorea bulbifera are prepared by additions of 0, 4, 6, 8 and 10% oligosaccharide solution, and dried at $50^{\circ}C$. The effects of pre-soaking percent of Dioscorea bulbifera slices were evaluated by the moisture, soluble solid, pH, titratable acidity, color, browning degree, texture, antioxidant activities and sensory test. According to the percent of pre-soaking oligosaccharide solution was increased, the moisture was increased but soluble solids and titratable acidity were decreased. With respect to the result of colors, Dioscorea bulbifera slices that underwent the 10% pre-soaked process (85.86%) were lighter than control (73.88%). However, the redness and yellowness scores were the lowest than control. The springiness and cohesiveness of texture showed no significant differences among all groups. Gumminess and chewiness of texture results were increased according to per-soaking concentration increase. Also the polyphenol, flavonoid and DPPH (${\alpha},{\alpha}$-diphenyl-${\beta}$-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS [2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] radical scavenging activities were significantly increased with increasing immersion concentration. The Dioscorea bulbifera slices supplemented with 6% pre-soaking oligosaccharide solution treatment showed the highest total sensory score. The results of our study indicated that when pre-soaking oligosaccharide solution is used to immerse the Dioscorea bulbifera slice, it has browning inhibition and antioxidant effect.
