  • This study empirically examines whether income smoothing effectively contributes to consumption smoothing. Since international factor movement plays an important role for income smoothing across countries, net factor income across countries deserves more attention in considering income smoothing than attention having been paid by previous studies in the literature. Most of previous studies assume that net factor income has the same degree of effects on consumption as GDP. For the case of 12 EU countries during the period from 1999 to 2010, our empirical investigation observes that the response of consumption with respect to net factor income is severely lower than the response of consumption with respect to GDP, and further net factor income has ignorable effects on the consumption. This evidence implies that the income smoothing via international factor movement is less significant in contributing to the consumption smoothing. In the sequel, our finding suggests that legal and institutional process for transferring net factor income across countries should be eased further to improve contribution of income smoothing to consumption smoothing.

  • For satisfying a recommended value of the quality factor which is one of the important elements in a filter design, a new design method of smoothing filter using an internal parameter of a homopolar generator is proposed. The method increases the efficiency and minimizes the size of the smoothing filter by removing the damping resistor. By considering the resonant frequency as well as the quality factor, the new method can improve the stability of the system which has high boosting converters with negative resistance characteristics.

  • This paper presents a new design method of optimal continuous deadbeat controller by using second-order smoothing elements. The continuous deadbeat controller is made of a serial integral compensator and a local feedback compensator introduced into the state feedback loop. The decision method of the damping factor and the natural angular frequency of the smoothing element is described. A numerical example is given to show how well input-output characteristics are improved. Especially according to the variable input and disturbance, corresponding CDBC design method is suggested. By computer simulations, control inputs and system outputs are shown to have desirable property such as smoothness.

  • The noise reduction algorithm using the non-local means (NLM) approach is very efficient in nuclear medicine imaging. In this study, the applicability of the NLM noise reduction algorithm in single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images with a brain phantom and the optimization of the NLM algorithm by changing the smoothing factors according to various reconstruction methods are investigated. Brain phantom images were reconstructed using filtered back projection (FBP) and ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM). The smoothing factor of the NLM noise reduction algorithm determined the optimal coefficient of variation (COV) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) results at a value of 0.020 in the FBP and OSEM reconstruction methods. We confirmed that the FBP- and OSEM-based SPECT images using the algorithm applied with the optimal smoothing factor improved the COV and CNR by 66.94% and 8.00% on average, respectively, compared to those of the original image. In conclusion, an optimized smoothing factor was derived from the NLM approach-based algorithm in brain SPECT images and may be applicable to various nuclear medicine imaging techniques in the future.

  • In this study, we optimized the FNLM algorithm through a simulation study and applied it to a phantom scanned by low-dose CT to evaluate whether the FNLM algorithm can be used to obtain improved image quality images. We optimized the FNLM algorithm with MASH phantom and FASH phantom, which the algorithm was applied with MATLAB, increasing the smoothing factor from 0.01 to 0.05 with increments of 0.001 and measuring COV, RMSE, and PSNR values of the phantoms. For both phantom, COV and RMSE decreased, and PSNR increased as the smoothing factor increased. Based on the above results, we optimized a smoothing factor value of 0.043 for the FNLM algorithm. Then we applied the optimized FNLM algorithm to low dose lung CT and lung CT under normal conditions. In both images, the COV decreased by 55.33 times and 5.08 times respectively, and we confirmed that the quality of the image of low dose CT applying the optimized FNLM algorithm was 5.08 times better than the image of lung CT under normal conditions. In conclusion, we found that the smoothing factor of 0.043 among the factors of the FNLM algorithm showed the best results and validated the performance by reducing the noise in the low-quality CT images due to low dose with the optimized FNLM algorithm.

  • Cooperative spectrum sensing can improve sensing reliability, compared with single node spectrum sensing. In addition, Eigenvalue-based spectrum sensing has also drawn a great attention due to its performance improvement over the energy detection method in which the more smoothing factor, the better performance is achieved. However, the more smoothing factor in Eignevalue-based spectrum sensing requires the more sensing time. Furthermore, more reporting time in cooperative sensing will be required as the number of nodes increases. Subsequently, we in this paper propose an Eigenvalue and superposition-based spectrum sensing where the reporting time is utilized so as to increase the number of smoothing factors for autocorrelation calculation. Simulation result demonstrates that the proposed scheme has better detection probability in both local as well as global detection while requiring less sensing time as compared with conventional Eigenvalue-based detection scheme.

  • A Photovoltaic (PV) system's power output varies with the change of climate. Frequency deviations, tie line voltage swings are caused by the varying PV power when large PV power from several PV systems is fed in the utility. In this paper, to overcome these problems, a simple coordinated control method for smoothing the variations of combined PV power from multiple PV systems is proposed. Here, output power command is formed in two steps: central and local. Fuzzy control is used to produce the central smoothing output power command considering insolation, variance of insolation and absolute average of frequency deviation. In local step, a simple coordination is kept between the central power command and the local power commands by producing a common tuning factor. Power converters are used to achieve the same output power as local command power employing PI control law for each of the PV generation systems. The proposed method is compared with the method where conventional Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control is used for each of the PV systems. Simulation results show that the proposed method is effective for smoothing the output power variations and feasible to reduce the frequency deviations of the power utility.

  • A multi-objective optimization technique was implemented to obtain optimal topologies of the inner reinforcement for a vehicle's hood simultaneously considering the static stiffness of bending and torsion and natural frequency. In addition, a smoothing scheme was used to suppress the checkerboard patterns in the ESO method. Two models with different curvature were chosen in order to investigate the effect of curvature on the static stiffness and natural frequency of the inner reinforcement. A scale factor was employed to properly reflect the effect of each objective function. From several combinations of weighting factors, a Pareto-optimal topology solution was obtained. As the weighting factor for the elastic strain efficiency went from 1 to 0, the optimal topologies transmitted from the optimal topology of a static stiffness problem to that of a natural frequency problem. It was also found that the higher curvature model had a larger static stiffness and natural frequency than the lower curvature model. From the results, it is concluded that the ESO method with a smoothing scheme was effectively applied to topology optimization of the inner reinforcement of a vehicle's hood.

  • Contrast enhancement methods for a single image applied to videos may cause flickering artifacts because these methods do not consider continuity of videos. On the other hands, methods considering the continuity of videos can reduce flickering artifacts but it may cause unnecessary fade-in/out artifacts when the intensity of videos changes abruptly. In this paper, we propose a robust method of video contrast enhancement for sudden illumination changes. The proposed method enhances each frame by Fast Gray-Level Grouping(FGLG) and considers the continuity of videos by an exponential smoothing filter. The proposed method calculates the smoothing factor of an exponential smoothing filter using a sigmoid function and applies to each frame to reduce unnecessary fade-in/out effects. In the experiment, 6 measurements are used for the performance analysis of the proposed method and traditional methods. Through the experiment. it has been shown that the proposed method demonstrates the best quantitative performance of MSSIM and Flickering score and show the adaptive enhancement under sudden illumination change through the visual quality comparison.

  • Providing a multimedia service requires efficient network bandwidth allocation scheduling. Typically, transmission of information with bursty characteristics, such as a video data stream, utilizes some type of smoothing technique that reduces the transmission rate fluctuation. While capable of a drastic reduction in the peak transmission rate, even the optimum smoothing algorithm proposed to date, however, is rather inadequate for multi-stream applications that share network bandwidth since such an algorithm has been designed and applied toward handling each independent stream. In this paper, we proposed an efficient bandwidth allocation algorithm that addresses these shortcomings. The proposed bandwidth allocation algorithm is divided into two steps, a static bandwidth allocation and a dynamic bandwidth allocation. In the former case, the peak rate reduction is achieved by maintaining the accumulated data in the user buffer at a high level, whereas the concept of real demand factor is employed to meet the needs of multi-stream bandwidth allocation in the latter case, Finally, the proposed algorithm's performance was verified with ExSpect 6.41, a Petri net simulation tool.
