  • A mesh generation algorithm adapted to the mesh density map using the Delaunay mesh generation technique is developed. In the finite element analyses of the forging processes, the numerical error increases as the process goes on because of discrete property of the finite elements or severe distortion of elements. Especially, in the region where stresses and strains are concentrated, the numerical discretization error will be highly increased. However, it is too time consuming to use a uniformly fine mesh in the whole domain to reduce the expected numerical error. Therefore, it is necessary to construct locally refined mesh at the region where the error is concentrated such as at the die corner. In this study, the point insertion algorithm is used and the mesh size is controlled by moving nodes to optimized positions according to a mesh density map constructed with a posteriori error estimation. An optimization technique is adopted to obtain a good position of nodes. And optimized smoothing techniques are also adopted to have smooth distribution of the mesh and improve the mesh element quality.

  • In general, it is difficult to transmit a VBR video like MPEG efficiently since MPEG fames are construct with various size. To solve this problem, some bandwidth smoothing techniques are proposed which is based on the prefetching video data into the client buffer with low bandwidth allocation. However these techniques do not provide efficient bandwidth smoothing technology and transmission technique for interactive video services like VCR-like functionality. In this paper, we propose and evaluated a new bandwidth allocation mechanism for interactive video services which has VBR traffic characteristics such a MPEG. This technique provides VCR-like functionality which is not supported on previous techniques and also maximizes the bandwidth utilization when interactive video services are provided. Through our experimental, we prove that the proposed technique dramatically decreases a traffic and guarantee the continuous playback simulaneously.

  • In this paper, twicing technique for the improvement of asymptotic boundary bias in nonparametric regression is considered. Asymptotic mean squared errors of the nonparametric regression estimators are derived at the boundary region by twicing the Nadaraya-Waston and local linear smoothing. Asymptotic biases of the resulting estimators are of order$h^2$and$h^4$ respectively.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose ways to remove false color noise (FCN) generated during de-mosaicing on RGB Bayer pattern images. In case of images sensors adapting Bayer pattern color filters array (CFA), de-mosaicing is conducted to recover the RGB color data in single pixels. Here, FCN phenomena would occur where there is clearer silhouette or contrast of colors. The FCN phenomena found during de-mosaicking process appears locally in the edges inside the image and the proposed method of eliminating this is to convert RGB color space to YCbCr space to conduct smoothing process. Moreover, for edges where different colors come together, censoring based smoothing technique is proposed as a way to minimize color blurring effect.

  • Since 3D measurement technologies have been widely used in manufacturing industries edge detection in a depth image plays an important role in computer vision applications. In this paper, we have proposed an edge detection process in a depth image based on the image based smoothing and morphological operations. In this method we have used the principle of Median filtering, which has a renowned feature for edge preservation properties. The edge detection was done based on Canny Edge detection principle and was improvised with morphological operations, which are represented as combinations of erosion and dilation. Later, we compared our results with some existing methods and exhibited that this method produced better results. However, this method works in multiframe applications with effective framerates. Thus this technique will aid to detect edges robustly from depth images and contribute to promote applications in depth images such as object detection, object segmentation, etc.

  • Radio occultation technique has been used in planetary science to obtain reliable and accurate temperature profiles of the other planets' atmosphere for decades. It relies on the fact that radio waves are bent and delayed due to the gradient of atmospheric refractivity along-ray-path. With the advent of Global Positioning System (GPS), it becomes possible to retrieve the refractivity and temperature profiles of the Earth's atmosphere from the occultation data. We have developed a retrieval algorithm and compared the results of our algorithm with the data of CHAMP to verify the accuracy of our algorithm is good enough. In our algorithm, there are some smoothing steps when retrieving. We analysis the data of FORMOSAT-3 and compare the results with and without smoothing and the results of TACC to see is there any phenomenon deleted after smoothing.

  • Topology optimization of the inner reinforcement for a vehicle's hood has been performed by evolutionary structural optimization(ESO) using a smoothing scheme. The purpose of this study is to obtain optimal topology of the inner reinforcement for a vehicle's hood considering the static stiffness of bending and torsion simultaneously. To do this, the multiobjective optimization technique was implemented. Optimal topologies were obtained by the ESO method. From several combinations of weighting factors, a Pareto-optimal solution was obtained. Also, a smoothing scheme was implemented to suppress the checkerboard pattern in the procedure of topology optimization. It is concluded that ESO method with a smoothing scheme is effectively applied to topology optimization of the inner reinforcement of a vehicle's hood considering the static stiffness of bending and torsion.

  • Subsea pipeline route design is a crucial task for the offshore oil and gas industry, and the route selected can significantly affect the success or failure of an offshore project. Thus, it is essential to design pipeline routes to be eco-friendly, economical and safe. Obstacle avoidance is one of the main problems that affect pipeline route selection. In this study, we propose a technique for designing an automatic obstacle avoidance. The Laplacian smoothing algorithm was used to make automatically generated pipeline routes fairer. The algorithms were fast and the method was shown to be effective and easy to use in a simple set of case studies.

  • In a text-to-speech system, sound units (e. q., phonemes, words, or phrases) can be concatenated together to produce required utterance. The quality of the resulting speech is dependent on factors including the phonological/prosodic contour, the quality of basic concatenation units, and how well the units join together. Thus although the quality of each basic sound unit is high, if occur the discontinuity in the concatenation part then the quality of synthesis speech is decrease. To solve this problem, a smoothing operation should be carried out in concatenation parts. But a major problem is that, as yet, no method of parameter smoothing is availalbe for joining the segment together.

  • Mean curvature diffusion (MCD) is a selective smoothing technique that promotes smoothing within a region instead of smoothing across boundaries. By using mean curvature diffusion, noise is eliminated and edges are preserved. In this paper, we propose methods of automatic parameter selection and implementation for the MCD model coupled to min/max flow. The algorithm has been applied to high resolution aerial images and the results show that noise is eliminated and edges are preserved after removal of noise.
