The objectives of this study were to analyze the socio-economical factors related to smoking and drinking behaviors using the Korea Welfare Panel data. The key variables were sex, age, frequency of health and medical facilities visit, subjective health level, smoking level, drinking level, depression symptoms, and low income level. Since the health variables in the Welfare Panel data were limited, the analysis was exploratory. In male population of those older than 30 years old, low income group people were more likely to smoke cigarettes than the general income population. In the result of the Chi square analysis, the smoking rate showed significantly different relationships with the different age groups, gender and income level. According to the descriptive analysis, persons with low income level were more likely to experience health risk behaviors and showed more medical service utilization. The utilization of the local public health centers was 4.6% for the Bow income level and 1% for the general level. The higher smoking rate was associated with the younger age, and the lower income. The smoking rate in the age category from 20 to 29 was 23.3% for the general level and 25% for the low income level. On the other hand, the drinking rate was even higher in the general families. The rates of non use of alcohol was 36.7% in the general families and 58.4% for the low income families. For both smoking and high risk drinking issues, demographic and sociological variables such as sex, age, education levels and income levels were analyzed, and there wer significant relationships. Health risk factors were serious for males, with age groups of 20's and 30's, lower education level, and in a low income family. In general, females were more unhealthy. The rates of smoking and drinking were higher in the low income level. Even in the health and nutrition survey results in 2005, persons in the low income class were experiencing poorer health in health level or the degree of action restriction. Since the effects of the health promotion could not be measured in a short period of time, it has not been easy to create the basis for the substantial effects. Factors related to health risks needs to be continuously studied using data from diverse field.
Purpose: This study was conducted to explore sexual attitude, sexual behavior and the related factors in chinese-Korean university students. Method: A self-administered questionnaire with cross-sectional design was used. Participants were 271 Chinese undergraduate students in one university in Jilin, China. Correlation coefficiency and t-test were used to find the relationships and to compare sexual attitude and sexual behavior and related factors. Result: Although sexual attitude of participants was moderate, they were more likely to be engaged in sexual behavior. The strong relationship between sexual attitude and sexual behavior suggested that those who have a permissive sexual attitude were more likely to have engaged in sexual behavior. The participants who responded that their parents have a less permissive attitude about sexual activity were less likely to be engaged in sexual behavior. There were significant relationships between sexual behavior and other variables, such as dating, experience of sexual activity, smoking and grades. Conclusion: Students who have a higher score of sexual attitude and had an experience of sexual activity were more likely to be at higher risk of being sexually.

Purpose: The purpose was to identify the risk of drug use by adolescents. Method: The participants were 933 male students in the first grade of a high school in D city. The data were collected from Aug. 5th to Oct. 30th, 2004. The instrument was the High Risk Group Adolescent Drug User Screening Test(HIRIGADUST) developed by the Korea Adolescent Society(1996). The data were analyzed using SPSS. Results: For substance use, 64.5% of the students answered that they had drunk, 40.3% that they had smoked, and 2.0% that they had tried drug use. For scores on HIRIGADUST regarding socio-demographic characteristics, there were significant differences depending on school type, personality, academic performance, economic status, and ability to talk with parents. For scores on HIRIGADUST regarding drug using-related characteristics, there were significant differences depending on drinking experience, frequency of drinking, amount of alcohol intake, smoking experience and number of cigarettes smoked. Of the students 27.2% students were in the high risk group. Conclusion: In schools, systematic and intensive assessment of drug use should be done, and if needed, a service system connected to clinics specializing in drug addiction should be established. Prevention education should be carried out continuously.
Purpose: In South Korea, suicide mortality has rapidly increased, so it has become a major public health concern. Multicultural adolescents are regarded as a high-risk group due to their situation. In this study, we compared the prevalence and risk factors of suicide ideation between Korean and multicultural adolescents. Methods: Data from the eleventh Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2015), collected by the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, were statistically analyzed using the descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression. The total participants were 63,376 in numbers. They were composed of 62,649 (98.9%) Korean and 727 (1.1%) multicultural adolescents. Results: I found that the prevalence of suicide ideation was significantly higher among the multicultural adolescents (15.8%) compared with those of Korean (11.3%). The risk factors of suicide ideation in the Korean group were co-residence without family, poor perceived health status, depressive mood, high stress level, poor perceived happiness level, and experience of violence. Conversely, the risk factors of the multicultural group were smoking, depressive mood, and experience of violence. Conclusion: These findings suggest that appropriate and practical prevention strategies should focus on psychological and environmental factors in order to prevent suicide ideation and reduce suicide behavior in Korean and multicultural adolescents.
Purpose: This study was done to identify risk factors influencing high school students to runaway from home. A comprehensive analysis of individual, family and social environment-related factors was done. Method: The participants in this descriptive survey on causal relations were 974 students enrolled in high school who were selected by convenience sampling. The data collected in June and July, 2003 were put in to logistic regression analysis to build a prediction model. Results: 1) Individual-related factors for running away in high school students were experience with smoking and sexual intercourse. 2) Family-related factors for running away in high school students were economic status and physically ill-treatment of the types of ill-treatment. 3) social environment-related factors for running away in high school students were number of delinquent friends. Conclusions and Recommendations: Running away from home among Korean high school students was associated not only with individual factors, but also with family and social environmental factors. The findings of study suggest that board intervention programs should be provided to prevent running away form home by adolescent. It is also recommended that a program be developed that can help control the variables identified in this study along with follow up study to verify the model.
The purpose of this study was to know the perception on acne for the college students to provide basic data for the suitable care of acne. Self-administrated questionnaires were completed by 641 college students. Dietary attitude, food habit, general perceptions on acne, knowledge level on acne, and relationship perception between special food and acne were analyzed. The results were as follows. 1. Self reported health status, smoking, obesity index were significantly different by experience of acne. 2. Dietary attitude and food habits were not significantly different by experience of acne. 3. Acne experienced subjects had acne on their face mostly and responded positively to specialized treatment. Proportions of getting the knowledge on acne were 40.6% from friends, 35.4% from magazine and 21.7% from TV or radio. 4. Proportions of correctly answered for the questions about pregnancy, hair cosmetics, oily food, male hormone, family history, constipation related with acne were less than 50% for acne experienced subjects. 92.5% of acne experienced subjects were answered eating chocolate, nut, and fat were related with breaking out and aggravating of acne. Perceptions on breaking out factors and aggravating factors of acne were not significantly different by gender. 5. More than 70% acne experienced subjects stated that instant foods, oily foods, meats, cookies, nuts were related with developing and aggravating acne. Soybean, Seaweed, fermented fish were recognized as less related with developing and aggravating acne.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine whether demographic and socio-economic characteristics, health behaviors and health status are related to academic achievement in Korean adolescents. Methods: Data from the 14th Korea Youth Risk Behaviors web-based Survey(KYRBWS) administered in 2018 were analyzed; 60,040 students in middle and high school participated in the survey. It was conducted frequency analysis, Rao-Scott chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis after adjusted for variables such as age, school grade. Results: The significant influencing factors on academic achievement were family economic status, living with parents, subjective health status, smoking experience, alcohol use experience, eating breakfast, sleeping, internet use during weekdays, depressive symptom(p<.001). The odds ratio for achieving higher academic achievement compared with those who never smoked was 1.50(p<.001). Conclusion: I found that students' undesirable health behaviors affect their academic performance. To improve academic achievement, I recommend intervention programmes such as school health promotion that reduce undesirable health related behaviors.
This study was conducted to investigate the drinking status, drinking habit and dietary habit of high school students using anonymous questionnaires. DVS and skipped meal status were obtained by 24 hour recall method. Two hundreds ninety seven of 380 students (78.2%) have experienced the drinking even though 73.7% of them was not addictive. One hundred sixty one students (54.2%) initiated drinking in the middle school, mostly because of ‘peer pressure’ and ‘curiosity’. The most plausible reasons for drinking were ‘for mingling’ and ‘for stress reduction’, and they used to have desire for drinking mostly when felt ‘anger or frustration’ and ‘feel good’. Drinking behavior was significantly different in age of first smoking, drinking history, amount, reason for drinking and desire for drinking between male and female student. There was no significant difference in dietary habits between drinking students and non-drinking students. DVS, skipped meal status, snack preferences and food intake frequency also did not show the significant differences. However, considering that the drinking experience of high school students increased, and drinking experience of female students approached to that of male student, more attention needs to be given to juvenile drinking and its'prevention.
We investigated the ecological variables of adolescent sexual behavior. We grouped the behaviors into organism, microsystem, mesosystem, and exosystem. The variables belonging to the organism group were sexual attitude, sex, grade, sexual knowledge, sexual education, dating experience, problem behaviors, and self-control. The microsystem variables included the parent-adolescent communication about sexuality, parental monitoring, parent educational background, friend relationships, and school environment. Moreover, the mesosystem variables included family-peer and family-school relationships. The exosystem variables were comprised of neighborhood environment and pornography. The study group included 369 adolescents from the first and second grade of several high school in Daegu, Korea. We found that the factors affecting adolescent sexual behavior included grade, sex, dating experience, self-control, smoking, and pursuing sexual pleasure. As well, contact with deviant friends, father-adolescent communication about sexuality, school type, and attachment to teacher. In addition the family-peer relationship also affected adolescent's sexual behaviors as well as pornography and neighborhood environment. Lastly the variable belonging to the organism group was found to have the greatest effect on adolescent, sexual behavior compared to the other variables.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of HPV (Human papillomavirus) vaccination among female university students. Methods: The participants in this study were 1,486 female university students. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaire from september 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, t-test, $x^2$-test and logistic regression. Results: The rate of HPV vaccination was 7.2%. Factors that influence HPV vaccination included residential region, smoking experience, family history of cervical cancer, experience having heard about the HPV vaccination, awareness that HPV is a sexual disease, HPV knowledge, perceived seriousness, perceived benefit and perceived barrier in health beliefs. Conclusion: The results suggest a need to increase HPV vaccination campaigns to increase awareness of HPV vaccination. University and health care facilities should provide health education emphasizing perceived seriousness and perceived benefits. Also, the national health insurance corporation should consider addressing cost issues as a barrier to HPV vaccination.
