  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness and actual condition toward nonsmoking policy in Korean adult. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 306 Korean adults between 20 to 60 years old from April 27 to May 26, 2015. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, smoking status(3 items), nonsmoking status(9 items), and nonsmoking policy(7 items). Data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 program. Results: Those who had alcohol consumption or not tried to participated in the nonsmoking program(p<0.05). There was a significant difference between nonsmoking education, cost of the nonsmoking education, and intention to stop smoking. Alcohol consumption is closely related to smoking and the appropriate approach to nonsmoking campaign must be done carefully on the basis of intention to stop smoking(p<0.05). Conclusions: As the government prohibits smoking in the public place, it is important the smokers to stop smoking by themselves and help the smokers to practice nonsmoking in their free will.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of smoking prevention program on changing the knowledge and attitude about smoking behavior of elementary school students, In September 1993, as a pretest, a total of 1492 students from 4 elementary schools in Seoul were assessed with self-completing questionnaire pertaining to knowledge and attitude about smoking. Among them, 704 students from 2 schools were assigned to intervention group and 788 students from other 2 schools were assigned to control group. Smoking prevention program was implemented in intervention group for about six months. In September 1994, as a posttest, all students were reassessed with the same questionnaire. The overall experimental smoking rate of students in the study was 8.0%; 13.4% in males and 2.9% in females. The baseline smoking knowledge score of intervention group and control group was 12.3 and 12.0, respectively. There was no significant difference between the two groups. But each score collected after one year interval was 15.3 and 13.0, respectively, which were significantly different(p<0.01). The main items of attitude, such as 'future intention to smoke', were not significantly changed by the intervention. Important predictors of 'future intention to smoke' in males were past history of experimental smoking, paternal smoking and knowledge about smoking. In females, past history of experimental smoking and knowledge about smoking were important predictors.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop a prediction model for future smoking intention among Korean adolescents aged 13 to 15 in order to identify the high risk group exposed to future smoking. Methods: The data was collected from a total of 5940 students who participated in a self-administrated questionnaire of a cross-sectional school-based survey, the 2004 Korea Global Youth Tobacco Survey. Chi-square tests and logistic regression analyses were carried out to identify the relevant determinants associated with intentions of adolescents’ future smoking. Receiver Operation Characteristic (ROC) assessment was applied to evaluate the explanation level of the developed prediction model. Results: 8.4% of male and 7.2% of female participants show their intentions of future smoking. Among non-smoking adolescents; who have past smoking experience [odds ratio (OR) 2.73; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.92- 3.88]; who have intentions of smoking when close friends offer a cigarette (OR 31.47; 95% CI = 21.50 - 46.05); and who have friends that are mostly smokers (OR 5.27; 95% CI = 2.85 - 9.74) are more likely to be smokers in the future. The prediction model developed from this study consists of five determinants; past smoking experience; parents smoking status; friends smoking status; ownership of a product with a cigarette brand logo; and intentions of smoking from close friends’ cigarette offer. The area under the ROC curve was 0.8744 (95% CI=0.85 - 0.90) for current non-smokers. Conclusions: For efficiency, school-based smoking prevention programs need to be designed to target the high risk group exposed to future smoking through the prediction model developed by the study, instead of implementing the programs for all the students.

  • Purpose - This study aims to explore the influence of combining "non-halal" labels with visual and textual warning labels on cigarette packages to induce the intention to quit smoking and boost the stop-smoking campaign. Research design, data, and methodology - This study examines"non-halal" labeling on cigarette packages using an experimental method. A total of 120 smokers, aged 18-23, were chosen from among Universitas Indonesia students. Data obtained were analyzed using ANOVA and T-Test. Results - The use of a "non-halal" label as a warning on cigarette packages is more effective to influence Muslim smokers to quit smoking. The results also suggest that "non-halal" labels more effectively increase intentions to quit smoking when use din combination with textual-visual labels. Conclusions - The study found that the addition of "non-halal" labels in textual or textual-visual warning labels on cigarette packages would significantly increase the intention of Moslems smokers to quit smoking. These results support previous research findings, that if cigarettes are labeled as "non-halal" (haram) products for Moslem teenagers, it will induce them to quit smoking.

  • Background: The prevalence of smoking among secondary school children continues to remain unchanged over the last 3 decades even though awareness regarding the health effects of smoking is increasing. Common misconceptions about smoking and parental influence could be factors influencing future intentions to smoke among these students. Hence, we looked at the common misconceptions as well as student perceptions about their future intention to smoke among Form 4 students in Shah Alam, Malaysia. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted by distribution of a questionnaire developed as part of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey to Form 4 student in 3 schools at Shah Alam. Results: Prevalence of smoking (current smokers) was 7.5%. Almost half of the children came from families where one or both parents smoked and a third of the parents had no discussion regarding consequences of smoking with them. A large number of students were classified as "triers" as they had tried smoking and were unsure of whether they would not be smoking in the future. Contrary to our expectations, students generally felt smoking did make one feel more uncomfortable and helped one to reduce body weight. Most students seemed to be aware of the ill-effects of smoking on health. They felt they had received adequate information from school regarding the effects on smoking on health. Conclusions: Our study showed that even though Form 4 students in Shah Alam were knowledgeable about ill-effects of smoking and were taught so as part of their school curriculum, the prevalence of smoking was still high. Students in the "trier group" represent a potential group of future smokers and strategies targeting tobacco control may be aimed at tackling these vulnerable individuals. Efforts are also needed to help educate secondary school children about common misconceptions and dispel myths associated with cigarette smoking.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of smoking prevention programs and their effectiveness for Korean school-aged children and adolescents by using systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: Electronic searches were performed in RISS, NAL, DBPia, KISS using keywords according to inclusion criteria. 21 studies published from 2003 to the first half of 2017 that dealt with effects of smoking prevention programs for school-aged children and adolescents were selected for systematic review. Results: All 21 studies were quasi-experimental research designs. More than half of the programs(66.7%) were conducted for male and female. Most of the programs were conducted more than once a week(71.4%). 14 studies(66.7%) did not report using a theoretical model. Five dependent variables(knowledge of smoking, attitude toward smoking, non-smoking intention, self-assertiveness, and self-efficacy) were selected to measure the effectiveness of the smoking prevention programs. Knowledge of smoking was the most effective at hedge's g=0.673. Self-efficacy and self-assertiveness variables were statistically significant at hedge's g=0.461 and hedge's g=0.279, respectively. Effect sizes of attitude toward smoking and non-smoking intention were not statistically significant compared to the control group. As a result of the moderator effect analysis on the knowledge of smoking variable, the statistically significant variables were 'gender of participants'(p<0.01) and 'duration of the program'(p<0.001). Conclusions: The results of this study using systematic review and meta-analysis will be evidence-based data for researchers conducting smoking prevention programs in school-aged children and adolescents.
