  • In this work, the effects of fire curtain and forced smoke ventilation on smoke spread to auditorium in the stage fire of theater were investigated using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). For the stage of 31 m (Width)${\times}$34 m (Depth)${\times}$32 m (Height) in dimension, the fast growth fire condition with 10 MW of heat release rate was applied. The forced smoke ventilation was set based on the National Fire Safety Code (NFSC) and previous research. The gap distances between the fire curtain and proscenium wall was established to be 0 m and 0.5 m. When the fire curtain was attached completely to the proscenium wall without any gap, no smoke spread from the stage to the auditorium occurred, independent of forced smoke ventilation. When the gap distance between the fire curtain and proscenium wall was 0.5 m, the smoke layer in the stage descended to the lower height from the bottom than the case without the fire curtain, which was because the smoke spread to auditorium was impeded by the fire curtain. Under the same fire curtain condition, the case with the forced smoke ventilation led to decreasing the mass flow rate of outflow through the gap between the fire curtain and proscenium wall, as compared to the case without the forced smoke ventilation. Based on this study, it was confirmed that the fire curtain and forced smoke ventilation were the effective tools to hold down the smoke spread to the auditorium in the stage fire of theater.

  • This study investigated numerically the influences of fire curtain and natural smoke vent area on smoke movement in the stage fire of a theater using FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator). The dimension of the theater stage was 31 m in width, 34 m in depth, and 32 m in height. The area ratios between the natural smoke vent and stage were approximately 10%, 8%, 5%, and 1%. The gap distance between the fire curtain and proscenium wall was 0.5 m. The fire curtain and natural smoke vent area were observed to affect significantly the behavior of smoke movement to the auditorium and the mass flow rates of inflow and outflow through the natural smoke vent and proscenium opening. In addition, under the same natural smoke vent area, the pressure in the stage with a fire curtain was lower than that without a fire curtain.

  • In this study, CFD computer simulations by FDS are carried out in order to confirm the performance of the combined operation of both sprinkler system and smoke curtain of 0.54 m depth installed for cooling and blocking the smoke which propagates beneath the sloped ceiling of a stairway corridor of which dimensions are 17.92 m long, 4.00 m wide, and 6.12 m high. It is shown that the response time of sprinklers decreases with fire size and it increases more about 1.1 second in case without smoke curtain than in case with smoke curtain, that the time of smoke transport from the fire source to the stairway outlet decreases considerably with fire size, and that the delay effect of smoke transport is not related to the sprinkler system, whether it is operated or not. This study shows that the combined operation of both sprinkler system and smoke curtain is very effective in smoke cooling, but it is a little for effect on smoke blockage. Although the hazard of skin burn due to radiative heat flux from hot smoke layer is decreased by spray cooling effect, the hazard of smoke suffocation and the weakening of visibility is increased by smoke downdrag and the turbulence of smoke-air mixing due to water spray. These conditions may result in preventing occupants from going out of the stairway during evacuation.

  • In designing smoke-control system of rescue station in train tunnel, a purpose is to prevent a disaster by proposing the jet fan operation together with smoke-control curtain in tunnel fire. This study has investigated the relationship of the Heat Release Rate(HRR) and a adequate ventilation velocity to control the fire propagation in tunnel fire, and has improved the effect of the smoke-control curtain on preventing the flow of pollutants. In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) simulations with ST AR-CD(ver 3.24) were carried out on predicting the fire spreading and the flow of pollutants, considering jet fan operations and effect of smoke-control curtain. Our simulation domain is the full scale model of the 'DAEGWALLYEONG' 1st tunnel. The results represent that ventilation operation can control the fire spreading and pollutants effectively to prevent a disaster.

  • A fire in a clean room may cause a serious loss by spreading smoke particles. The effects of the width of smoke curtains on delay in smoke spread, which is located the work area boundaries, were investigated by using a computational fluid dynamics, for loss prevention by smoke spreading from one fire area to another. The fire scenario was set to a 1 MW methanol fire in a space of $30m\times10m$ floor and 4 m high. Distributions of temperature and smoke particles were compared for the width of the smoke curtains 0 (without smoke curtains), 1, 2, 3m. It was confirmed that a larger width of the smoke curtain delays spread of smoke more, and that making the work areas compartments is necessary to confine the smoke in the fire area.

  • In this study, we have evaluated the hazardous factors of fires such as heat release rate, smoke density, ignition temperature, and flammability of carpet and curtain used in the public facilities. As a result of flame retardant treatment, the heat release rate of materials treated with flame retardant was lower than that of not treated. However, the smoke density of treated materials was higher than that of not treated. Also, we have investigated the fire characteristics of used and unused carpet. As a result, the heat release rate and the smoke density of used for 3 years carpet were higher than those of unused carpet. The distinct differences of flammability and ignition temperature between used and unused carpet were confirmed.

  • In case of a fire in road or railway tunnel it is always necessary to keep the escape condition as good as possible. Most of the victims of major fires in tunnels are because they couldn't leave the tunnel in time and were trapped by smoke, or rescue teams couldn't reach the place of the accident due to low visibility and high temperature. In spring 2003 a comprehensive field experiment was undertaken in a large scaled tunnel in Youngin City to test the effectiveness of a new water spray curtain system, designed to the air qualify inside of a tunnel in case of fire during passenger's escape to safe routes, In order to control the smoke propagation, fixed water sprayed nozzles were used to make water curtain system, which can be installed or hanging water piping line below ceiling. The experiment was accompanied by an extensive measurement campaign in order to measure temperature dropping effect and flow conditions as well as CO concentration for various water sprayed curtains produced by sprinkler heads or water spray nozzle. Eventually comparison analysis were undertaken to investigate the performance of water curtains under fixed water pressure. Therefore most effective water curtain system was presented on the basis of water droplet size in long tunnel.

  • The development of science and technology has increased the average life expectancy and resulted in a significant increase in the elderly population. Due to the preponderance of the nuclear family in modern society and the weakening of the spirit of filial piety and respect for the elderly caused by the influence of Western civilization, elderly people are usually not living with their family, but have become dependent on elderly care facilities and, consequently, the number of elderly care facilities has increased significantly. On May 28, 2014, a fire occurred in the elderly care facilities in Jangseong, South Jeolla Province, and despite the rapid extinction of the fire by firefighters, 21 of the 28 casualties died due to smoke inhalation. This study was conducted for the purpose of providing measures to prevent smoke from entering into the rooms from which elderly people have difficulty evacuating in the case of fire. The use of the air curtain method to prevent smoke inflow was proposed and an experiment was conducted in which smoke was generated with a smoke generator. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that more than 90% of the smoke inflow was blocked if the door was closed in the room where the air curtain was installed.
